I have a desktop computer running OpenSUSE 11.2 with two network cards installed. I would like to use both cards for connecting to the internet using different networks. The setting would be the following: eth0 is the main (default) card, almost all programs should use this NIC for connecting to the internet. eth1 is used only by a few programs, which have setting for selecting which network interface to use. The two NIC's are connected to different networks, so the IP address of the NIC's, the related subnet masks and gateways are also different.
Saying short, I would like to have the two NIC's as they would be in two separate computers. I can set the IP address and subnet mask of the NIC's. The main problem is that I can only declare one gateway. How can i setup this? I do not use network manager, I configure network cards using yast, but if needed I can of course use ifconfig directly.

I've installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 with two network cards. One for external, and one internal.My problem is that as soon as i activate eth1 (external), i can't access the server from the internal network (eth0)
With these settings i can't reach the internal network from inside.If i disable the gateway on eth1 and enable the gateway on eth0, it works.

I have a fedora 10 box with two network card on eth0 I have a pppoe connection to the internet, on second card eth1 I share my internet connection end I set up a samba server but I don't know if the settings are good. How to do this settings right to work fine, the ip are assigned by dhcp I don't use any static ip .When I try to browse the internet from the other computers some site's like {.com ; .org ; .info} are block, other site from {.ro} are working. Someone tell me something about turn off all my filters, but I don't know where to find this filter to turn it off. And when I use samba I can't have and internet access or vice versa. I have a linux domain (FEDORA CORE 1) and two laptop's which are part of my domain with windows xp pro service pack 2.I have given two ip's to both the laptop's being primary as global and secondary as local.I have configured printer in one laptop and shared.Till last week i was accessing that shared printer from my other laptop and every thing was working fine.Last week i formatted one laptop,(which dose not have shared printer) from then onwards i am not able to access my other laptop. I get the following message when i try to accessmy other Laptop,"you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"P.S : If i have only local IP i am able to see both the systems and i am able to access my printer, this problem comes only when i add global IP to both the machines.And also i have stopped the firewall and other things.

i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.

I recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on a desktop computer. Everything works fine aside from the fact that I can't access my Dell 3010cn network printer. The printeis accessible and work flawlessly with every other computers running XP, Vista and Ubuntu 9.10I installed the drivers and configured the printer with the exact same parameters as on my 9.10 laptop. The thing is that the printer is always "offline" as if my computer could not connect to it. Also, when I try to acces its options via its fixed IP adress (192.168.1.107) through Firefox, I cannot reach the printer. However, the printer responds to every other computer in the house.What am I doing wrong? Is there a firewall in 10.04 that keeps me from accessing to the printer?

I've got my other networking problem (mostly) solved, but now I'm having other issues.I was previously able to access the shared folders on a Windows machine on the network essentially by default. Now whenever I try to navigate to the shared folders graphically (either through Places->Network->Windows Network->(workgroup name here), or through a custom shortcut on the deskop), I get a message: "Failed to retrieve share list from server". I have no idea what I might have done config-wise (or install-program-wise) to screw it over, but something's definitely not working...it's been like this for a good many weeks, and I've just dealt with it, seeing as how I don't normally use that shared folder much anyway.
What's really ticking me off now, though, is that long before this started happening, I had set up a printer share with the same computer (using the graphical tool that comes with Ubuntu), and that worked excellently to start out. Recently, however, when I tried to print from the same printer (after the "Failed to retrieve share list" message started showing up), it would sit there and show "Pending"; it wouldn't print at all. Then I tried deleting the existing entry and creating a new one, figuring a new, fresh configuration would be created. However, when I tried to add a printer via the graphical tool (same as I had done before), it's telling me that "No printer was fount at [that] address".

This is the set up I have: PC downstairs by a tv, with 3TB of storage containing my media, connected to the tv too. HTPC upstairs by another tv and connected to it. A few laptops and other desktops around the house which are windows based
I want the downstairs pc to act as a file server and to run my torrent client, it is running Ubuntu desktop version and has xbmc installed too for use with the tv. The upstairs htpc has xbmc live on and will access the media from the file server. What I am looking to do is to be able to log into my ubuntu machine remotely from a laptop running windows so I can manage the files and add torrents for download etc, but for this to be a complete remote session, rather than taking control over what is already being shown on the downstairs pc, like VNC does in windows.
I have two user accounts set up on the main ubuntu machine, the admin account and a media user account which is set to go straight to xbmc after log in. Also how can I make sure that the media drives are automatically mounted to allow access if the admin user is not logged in?

I am booting a certain system of mine with ubuntu 9.10 from external HDD. I am satisfied with the setup and it works fine, however I would like to modify it so that I can choose which graphic card drivers to load during the boot time. Specifically I would like to choose between:
nvidia proprietary driver
ati proprietary driver
generic driver
Currently if I am using proprietary drivers then dont boot into X, delete xorg.conf, start gdm and reconfigure the system using jockey (for hardware drivers).
What would be the steps to make this (semi-)automatic and avoid restarting X?
Where could one find examples of such scripts?

Having made the transition from a certain widely used operating system to linux, suse 11.2, x64, successfully and pleasantly we are still left with a few problems.One of these is a few applications i have to use which run only in that old OS. ?To that end I have installed VirtualBox and got them to run with one glitch. I cannot print from VBox to my HP LaserJet 4000, lpt1 printer, which works fine in suse. Searching and posting on the Vbox forums turned up that lpt1 is not supported in the current vbox and that I need to set up a virtual network, set up the printer as a network printer and set it up as an lpd/lpr printer in Vbox WinXP. Have tried many different ways to do this without success, I think the problem is I do not know how to set up a network printer in Linux.
The virtual network is vboxnet0, which does show up in ifconfig, along with my eth0 net, and I can ping the windows guest, gateway and the host from either side host:suse/guest:winXP) respectively. Have tried numerous ways of setting up printer in YaST which works in suse but still does not work from WinXP guest. Have read the suse manual and several sources and searched forums with no results.Finally I am thinking I just don't know how to set up a network printer in linux. Using cups, kde, suse 11.2, don't know what else to tell. Samba is installed, although I am not using it to the best of my knowledge.

I'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.
I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.
The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.

I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

i have been trying to figure out how to get my CAC working on my laptop so i can log into service portal sites and do things while i am TDY that require CAC logins. I have followed this tutorial [URL], and i got as far as getting the module installed into firefox, but it wouldnt aknowledge my card being inserted and wouldnt prompt me to select a certificate or anything. Then i tried OpenSC, but for one it wouldnt acknowldege my card being inserted and the module wouldnt load in firefox.
I mainly want to use this for logging into AirForce Portal, DTS, and Webmail while im TDY so i dont have to find a GOV computer to do that stuff on. I would ultimately like to get it setup to where i can use my CAC to login to my laptop just like a Government computer, but if i cant do that right now i wont cry over it.
Im using a SCM SCR3340, i havent seen it on any supported hardware list yet, but so far coolkey and opensc have both detected my reader, just opensc didnt detect my card being inserted.

I installed 2 nic cards in my pentium 4 computer running rhel5 to be used as a proxy server and connect 2 computers in each network card for testing . The problem is I cannot ping or use the 2 cards simultaneously . One must be deactivated for the other to be ping . The Network configuration panel indicate both card status as active but i can only ping the first to be activated . I have already set onboot=yes to both cards but still the same result after restarting . The nic cards are onboard - Realtek RTL8139 and pci -3com 3c905b.

I'm running a Fedora 10 box behind a Comcast cable modem that provides squid and mail services to 15 XP and Vista workstations. I upgraded the ethernet cards on our Fedora box to support our new 1 gigabyte network. I kept the same device configuration eth0 and eth2 by updating the /etc/udev/net persistent file and changing the ethernet hardware address in the respective ifcfg-eht files in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. The box booted to the new cards, the route and ifgonfig shows the new cards and their hardware addresses, the configuration looks as how the old cards looked (eth0 and eth2 respectfully). I was able to browse the local network and have access to the internet as before from inside the network . However I cannot get access to our web server that serves our web host and our VPN services from ouside our network. I tried stopping the firewall and still could nor connect from outside the network.Could my old ethernet hardware address be hard coded somewherel?

I just installed Debian 5.0 onto my laptop (Dell e6410) and it appears to boot and run fine, except that it does not recognize the network card (it did not do so during the installation). I have a small pc running fedora 8 with iptables and 2 network cards for routing/firewall and secondary DNS.For some time I've been alerted by the network guys that this machine was generating some alerts. The real network IP address keeps being assigned to the other interface, intended for LAN only (10.0.0.1/24).I've already changed the PC, installed a more recent operating system, replaced the 2 network cards and the problem persists. I have another pc running the same services (except DNS) in a very simillar way and no alert logs from that one.onder if it is some configuration issue on my startup firewall script.I've also installed arpwatch and I could confirm this IP and physical address issue:

Toshiba T110 laptop, 4 meg ram, kernel 2.6.31-14; multi boot Suse / Ubuntu / Windows; Atheros AR8132 Ethernet card; Realtek RTL8191 SE wireless card.
Installed 9.10 from an old DVD lying around - everything appeared to go ok, but no networks cards - Ethernet or wireless - were detected during the install.
(Later versions do not install - problems somewhere with video card - I need to allow multi kernel selection - but this is another issue)
Does this mean that this install is toast, or can it be saved?

I have two D-Link network cards installed in my computer. The Ubuntu 10.04a2 installer seemed to recognize only one of them, though I know both are functional. I plugged a CAT5 cable in here, connected to my home network (with Internet). The installer proceeded happily, configuring DHCP and synchronizing clocks. However, when I rebooted after its completion, Ubuntu didn't recognize that I was connected to the network. I re-jiggled the RJ-45 connector, to no avail. When I run "System Testing," it does list both network cards during the Network suite, one being D-Link, and the other "James Bond" or something. So, what gives?
