Debian Configuration :: Abysmal Write Speeds Over Network

Nov 11, 2010

Linux beginner, first project is a NAS based on Debian Lenny. Have SMB and AFP running. Hooked to a gigabit network. 8 disk RAID6 with mdadm. Need the NAS to back up our production company's video files.First attempt at back up was very, very slow on smb and afp. Used a Mac disk benchmark app, shows 100+MBps reads, but only .4MBps (as in 400kbps!) writes. Went through office LAN, and also tried just cabling the two machines (MacPro and Debian NAS) directly. Same results. Not sure what the write speeds are internally, as I don't know of any Linux/Debian disk testing software.

Debian Configuration :: Slow Transfer Speeds On SAMBA Share But Gigabit Speed On SCP

Feb 12, 2016

I'm having a strange problem with data transfers between systems. I have a file server + my desktop. Both are running Debian 8.3. I have a samba share running on the file server and I mount the shares on my desktop on boot via /etc/fstab

When I copy a file using the nautilus from my home folder (on my HDD) on my desktop to the mounted network location, my transfers start out at gigabit speeds 80MB/s-90MB/s for a couple seconds and then drop down to about 8MB/s

But when I terminate the transfer and then use scp to transfer the same file, I get consistent gigabit speed throughout the transfer. I am not sure what is going on.

Hardware :: Poor Write Speeds With RAID5 On 10.10

Jul 21, 2011

I am getting extremely poor write speeds with my RAID. My setup is as follows: > HP Proliant Microserver > 4 2TB Samsung F4 drives > 60GB root drive > Ubuntu 10.10 64bit > mdadm 3.2.2. I have two of the above servers, connected via gigabit LAN. The read speeds I am happy with, but write speeds are running at about 20Mb/s at the very best, Especially when people with a similar setup on a machine like this are running at about 90MB/s write speeds. My array is as follows (mdadm --detail -D /dev/md0):

[code]...

I have also started the partitions at 64 instead of 63 in a bid to correctly align the partitions, although this doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Hardware :: External HDD Write Speeds Slower Than Windows?

Sep 30, 2010

When I copy files to my External NTFS HDD using Ubuntu the write speeds are about 10-12 MB/sec, but when I copy files using Windows the write speeds are about 25-30 MB/sec.

Exact same files, tried all three ports on my netbook and even timed it to see if the speeds are by any chance miscalculated by either operating system and Ubuntu is definitely writing at half the speed.

So what could be the problem? When I had Windows on this Netbook I never got had a problem with write speeds so I don't think it is a hardware issue.

Ubuntu :: Slow Write Speeds On Mdadm RAID 5 Array

Mar 3, 2010

I have a 4 drive RAID 5 array set up using mdadm. The system is stored on a seperate physical disk outside of the array. When reading from the array its fast but when writing to the array its extremely slow, down to 20MB/Sec compared to 125MB/Sec reading. It does a bit then pauses, then writes a bit more and then pauses again and so on.The test i did was to copy a 5GB file from the RAID to another spare non-raid disk on the system average speed 126MB/s. Copying it back on to the RAID (in another folder) the speed was 20MB/s.The other thing is very slow several KB/s write speed copying from eSATA drive to the RAID.

Ubuntu :: Very Slow Write Speeds To USB External Hard Drive?

Oct 11, 2010

I'm trying to back up my hard drive to a 2 TB WD external so that I can do a clean install of 10.10, however I'm getting tremendously slow write speeds. It hovers around 1.5 MB/s and steadily slows from there. It tells me it will take 150+ hours to transfer 400 GB of data.

I have a AMD quad core processor and 8 gigs of ddr3 ram... USB 2.0... I feel this should go much faster.

Slackware :: Write A Script To Switch Between Different Network Configuration?

May 8, 2010

I am running Slackware 12.2.
I have checked the file like /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf, and the command 'ip' or 'ifconfig', but still can not figure out how to write a script to switch between two network configurations easily.

Suppose that one configuration uses DHCP server to dynamically give the ip address, and uses a Default Gateway 1.1.1.1, a net mask 1.0.0.0, a DNS server 1.1.1.0;
and in another configuration the Ip address is fixed, and use a Default Gateway 2.2.2.2, a net mask 2.0.0.0, a DNS server 2.2.2.0;
Anyone would like to give me a hint on how to write one (or two separate) script(s) to switch between these two settings?

Debian Configuration :: All Users Not Able To Write To USB Stick

Jan 5, 2011

I have a USB stick, formatted as FAT32 and I assumed that everybody would be able to read from and write to it. However, I find that if more than one person is logged on to the machine (logged on locally, with "Switch User"), then only one of the users is allowed to write to the stick, and the other users are only allowed to read from it. Is that normal?

Here's the scenario: person A logs into the machine, is in the middle of something but gets called away and the screensaver kicks in. The screen is now locked. Person B comes to the machine to quickly copy a file onto a USB stick, doesn't know person A's password so does a "Switch User" and logs in as themselves. They plug in the stick, can read from it, but can't write to the stick at all. Permission denied.

By doing a "ls -l /media", person B can see that the stick is mounted but is owned by personA with permissions drwxr-xr-x . So only person A can write to the stick. I haven't done extensive testing but it seems to be the person who logged on first who gets to own the stick. It's certainly repeatable as described above. And it's really annoying, because unless person B knows the root password, he can't write to the stick. As a real last resort person B could reboot the computer but he doesn't know whether person A has any important stuff open or not.

Debian Configuration :: Build Wine And Write Down All The Actions?

Has someone tried to build and install wine in squeeze? I tried follow different manuals (e.g. [URL].. but always run into lots of warnings, missing packages and abortion of make. No wonder, squeeze seem to be pretty different from lenny.

I installed the binary wine, but that does not help in my case. There is a kind of bug in code for the mouse that can be fixed only by applying a patch. So anyone want to build wine and write down all the actions?

CentOS 5 :: Vbox Network Speeds Slow?

I tried the virtio-net (paravirtualized) drivers and only getting 50-90mbps using it, which i found odd. Is there any way i can increase the througput to my VMs? I seen some people on forums talking about getting 300-350mbps, but im no where close to that. When i check throughput to the host (CentOS) i get at least 800 mbps.

Debian Configuration :: Network Not Work When Use 2 Network Cards

Oct 24, 2010

I'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.

I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.

The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.

Debian Configuration :: No Network After Some Hours

May 25, 2011

I have a computer home that I use a web server and I had Lenny in it for about a year and didn't experience any problems. Recently I needed to update to Squeeze just to be able and use part of my server for a game(which I couldn't compile on Lenny). I renamed every "lenny" word in the /etc/apt/sources.list with "squeeze" and ran dist-upgrade. Everything seemed fine(minor some "link not found" warnings). I also had some minor problems with the mysql configuration after the update but I managed to fix them all. Then I noticed that after some hours(not sure how many) I can suddenly not reach my computer via ssh. Neither can I visit my website(even from the local network). The computer doesn't appear either in the router's "attached devices" list. My other computers have no problems so it can't be a router issue.Pinging from the server to the outside world doesn't work. I tryied "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart" and that didn't do anything. The only way to fix the problem is by rebooting but then again after some hours the problem is still there. Do you guys have any idea what the problem can be?
