In my desktop I recently installed one of these network cards. Web pages load pretty quickly, but the signal is only 2 out of 5 bars. On my notebook, I get 4/5 bars from the same location away from my wireless router. I have a 25/25 Verizon FiOS plan and can usually obtain around 30Mbps through Speedtest on my wired machines and notebook. But for some reason, my desktop barely goes over 4Mbps.

It works for me, but it disconnects fairly often, and download speeds are extremely slow, like 12-15 kB/s. I have broadband, and am running Ubuntu 11.04.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have managed to compile and load the RaLink drivers for my wifi card and get an internet connection.My problem is that when I do a broadband speed test on using chrome I get about 1.5 Mbs and on my laptop (Windows 7 meh :-( ) its closer to 7Mbs. I was wondering if there are any other settings I can modify or tweak that could potentially change to improve this. or maybe a better way to test the through put of my connection?I downloaded the latest drivers for my device from Ralink and compiled new module, but I get a little confused on what settings to do and where it reads any configuration information from.
Also this may be off topic or thread, if so I apologise, but I am sure there is a quick answer to this and there is a lot of different information out there on where and how I load my new rt3562sta.ko module into the kernel on start up. As currently I am calling insmod on it manually every time I start up then the Network Manager picks it up and connects.
have the latest Vbox installed on CentOS 5.4, i have a XP home VM & Server 2003 VM set up. Im using the T1000 Emulated network driver and only getting 100-150mbps throughput when checked with QCheck. I tried the virtio-net (paravirtualized) drivers and only getting 50-90mbps using it, which i found odd. Is there any way i can increase the througput to my VMs? I seen some people on forums talking about getting 300-350mbps, but im no where close to that. When i check throughput to the host (CentOS) i get at least 800 mbps.

I'm running Ubuntu on both machines, tried with VLC and XBMC. Both are running wirelessly but I know that this issue is new, I used to get at least a meg a second on LAN.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.
I have a Acer Revo R3610 nettop on which I installed oS11.3. It has an Atheros AR5001 wireless network adaptor.I'm getting very bad latency and throughput on with this card. In comparison my Thinkpad with Intel card achieves at least 10 times the throughput from the same location. Also when I boot my wifi will come up authenticate and then a few seconds later disconnect and reconnect. I've tried updating the kernel to 2.6.35 as one of the fixes was to improve the performance of the ath5k driver. I'm using wpa2 authentication.

Is there anything else I paste that will help determine the cause of the bad throughput. Browsing the web or copying files across the network is bordering unusable.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and my internet works fine except for my download speeds. In Windows, downloading the same file, it downloads at around 200kb/s but in Ubuntu, it hovers around 20kb/s and never tops 50kb/s. Any idea how I can fix this because I really don't want to go back to Windows but I may have to.

And I have noticed the download speeds have been extremely slow.I have only been getting speeds around 20-60 kbs/sec before I installed ubuntu when it was running windows 7, I was getting around 100-300 kbs/sec. I know its not my internet, because my new laptop runnings windows 7 gets about 250-300.Any suggestions? Its not just in chrome or firefox, its especially slow when downloading packages.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIts a Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop. 1.8GHz Pentium M, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, and some form of Intel graphics. The wireless card in question is a Dell TrueMobile 1300, with a BCM4306 Rev02 chip.Installed 10.04 LTS, updated it all on wired connection, then enabled the bcm43legacy drivers that were in the Hardware Drivers box, and it all worked fine. First thing I did was try to install some media codecs, and noticed they went slow on wifi, and swapped to the wired connection again. I thought it might just be slow servers, but I instantly got an extra 200kbps just by wiring. I try browsing the web, but its extremely slow and sometimes Firefox stops responding. I then begin to install WINE, and it complete stops loading, so I watch the net traffic when I hit a search in FF. Nothing goes out. I hit it a few times more, and finally it'll send something and receive something, but still VERY SLOWLY.
Its not a local problem, as other computers and laptops can connect fine with good speeds. Just wondering if this is normal, or if there's any other drivers to try, or if there's something I'm doing wrong here. I'm kind of a linux noob, but I'm for defs not a computer noob. But since I can't be guaranteed the drivers work with my specific card, who knows?
I'm finding that the internet speed in Ubuntu 10.04 is over twice as slow as the speeds that I am getting in Windows 7.I've tried disabling IPv6 through Grub and Firefox but it didn't really help much.. anything else I can try?Connecting through wireless at 54 Mbps.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhenever a client tries to download a file from my server via ftp, SAMBA, Teamspeak 3 File Transfer, etc., they report very slow download speeds, around 3-6 kb/s. If I try a ftp file transfer locally, the upload speeds are normal, but I still experience slow download speeds.
My server is connected to a router, which connects to the internet. All other machines connected to that router can upload and download files at normal speeds. It seems to be a server problem, I just don't know where to start.
I have read many threads but cannot find a solution on this code...
Now no matter how i transfer if its from HDD to HDD or to SSD i never get more then 18-20MB/sec, i just tried booting to my live CD and was able to transfer with 24-25MB/sec
This is really slow, since the worst (2.0TB) can do a minimum of 30 READ
Anybody got any ideas, this seems to be something that has plagued ubuntu for years, and no i don't want to try other distros, i tried almost all of them a year ago and finally went with ubuntu

And the most frustrating part is, I've found many posts all over the web from others who have had similar problems, but they ALL seem to be older distros and those solutions don't work for me. "Find Similar Threads" only yields one thread, and I don't have the file mentioned in the answer (the original poster didn't either).

Problem: When I transfer files to my mp3 player in Ubuntu, I max out at about 150 KiBbps. It's painfully slow - it takes me half an hour to transfer 300 MB worth of albums. I had similar problems with an older player that may have been usb 1.1, but this one is brand new. And when I switched to Vista (first time in months, thankfully), I was able to transfer the same files at upwards of 3 MBps. I know that flash devices often can't write anywhere near the max speed of USB 2.0, but obviously it can do a whole lot better then 150 KiBps!So, same hardware, same files, different OS - the problem must be with my Ubuntu config.
I when I burn a dvdrw with K3B, it remains at 1x speed even tough I chose the maximum speed in the dialog(don't know whether this is also the case with dvd-r or cdr since i don't have any with me at the moment). So, I guess there is something wrong. I read that it could have something to do with DMA, Or could it be something else?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI am currently staying on a university campus in Taiwan. Internet on Ubuntu Lucid 64bit here is often painfully slow, except for connections to Taiwanese websites. I dual boot with Windows 7, and there is no problem there. For instance, I downloaded the same piece of software (Spideroak) on both Win and Ubuntu, with Ubuntu I had to try repeatedly as the download would not complete, and in the end it took several hours to download. On W7, it took 10 minutes. What is Windows and Ubuntu doing differently?
I tried disabling ipv6 for this session by running sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1, as a number of posts mention improving connection speed that way, but no effect.
I know that websites from Taiwan are working well, because I am getting my Ubuntu updates from a Taiwanese mirror: updates are fast, except for packages in the 'partner' repos (presumably not loaded from the mirror) which take hours to load, if at all. I don't want to depend on Windows for large downloads... (I don't want to depend on Windows for anything).
I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm having problems with internet speeds on wifi. I have tried the two available networks on my university campus and both of them are very slow with 10.04. I'm not having problems with Windows 7 running on these networks. Although, the wired network works perfectly fine, with normal speeds. I've looked around for help but I could not find anything specific to this problem.

I have recently switched to Ubuntu 11.04 64bit from Windows 7. Since installing 11.07 I have experienced random disconnects, slow speeds and just overall poor performance from my ethernet card. Looking into the issue further I noticed that the driver installed for my NIC is "driver=r8169", but the actual NIC card is "product: RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller" which I think pretty much says I should be running the 8168 driver.
When I run lsmod I only see "r8169 " installed. How do I go about getting and installing the r8168 driver? I am pretty sure I just need to install this driver and then blacklist the r8169 in blacklist.conf. Any clarification would be great.
I have a 4 drive RAID 5 array set up using mdadm. The system is stored on a seperate physical disk outside of the array. When reading from the array its fast but when writing to the array its extremely slow, down to 20MB/Sec compared to 125MB/Sec reading. It does a bit then pauses, then writes a bit more and then pauses again and so on.The test i did was to copy a 5GB file from the RAID to another spare non-raid disk on the system average speed 126MB/s. Copying it back on to the RAID (in another folder) the speed was 20MB/s.The other thing is very slow several KB/s write speed copying from eSATA drive to the RAID.

I set up software RAID 5 on three 7200rpm Seagate Barracudas (2x80GB, 1x40GB) with 40 GB partitions on the beginning of all three disks.Now, when I do benchmarks using the Disk Utility I get about 52 MB/s read speed on the array. This seems kinda slow considering the average read speed on each individual drive is about 48 MB/s. Also, boot up takes about 30 seconds, which is the same as when I had Ubuntu installed on just one of the 'cudas, without RAID. Now, I am I missing something? Shouldn't the read speed be more that twice as fast since it can read from all three disks?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for a while (though I would not consider myself an "expert") and have just gone back to school. I live on campus and connect to the network through an ethernet cord. On Windows, the download speed is 1 Mb/s by default, but if you go through and configure the network card (turning off the auto-negotiation and setting the speed to 10, duplex full) the download speed will increase to 10 Mb/s, a considerable difference. So, I tried to do this in Ubuntu by opening the terminal and typing the following:
sudo ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off speed 10 duplex full and all of a sudden, my computer isn't connecting to the internet. When I type: sudo ethtool -s eth0 autoneg on it suddenly starts working again.
I'm trying to back up my hard drive to a 2 TB WD external so that I can do a clean install of 10.10, however I'm getting tremendously slow write speeds. It hovers around 1.5 MB/s and steadily slows from there. It tells me it will take 150+ hours to transfer 400 GB of data.
I have a AMD quad core processor and 8 gigs of ddr3 ram... USB 2.0... I feel this should go much faster.

The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.
I've installed the Ubuntu 10.04 Server onto a PPC G4 Mac just for the experience of setting up a server. During the installation process Ubuntu couldn't auto-configure my DHCP Network.
