Hardware :: Poor Write Speeds With RAID5 On 10.10

Jul 21, 2011

I am getting extremely poor write speeds with my RAID. My setup is as follows: > HP Proliant Microserver > 4 2TB Samsung F4 drives > 60GB root drive > Ubuntu 10.10 64bit > mdadm 3.2.2. I have two of the above servers, connected via gigabit LAN. The read speeds I am happy with, but write speeds are running at about 20Mb/s at the very best, Especially when people with a similar setup on a machine like this are running at about 90MB/s write speeds. My array is as follows (mdadm --detail -D /dev/md0):

[code]...

I have also started the partitions at 64 instead of 63 in a bid to correctly align the partitions, although this doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Debian Configuration :: Abysmal Write Speeds Over Network

Nov 11, 2010

Linux beginner, first project is a NAS based on Debian Lenny. Have SMB and AFP running. Hooked to a gigabit network. 8 disk RAID6 with mdadm. Need the NAS to back up our production company's video files.First attempt at back up was very, very slow on smb and afp. Used a Mac disk benchmark app, shows 100+MBps reads, but only .4MBps (as in 400kbps!) writes. Went through office LAN, and also tried just cabling the two machines (MacPro and Debian NAS) directly. Same results. Not sure what the write speeds are internally, as I don't know of any Linux/Debian disk testing software.

Hardware :: External HDD Write Speeds Slower Than Windows?

Sep 30, 2010

When I copy files to my External NTFS HDD using Ubuntu the write speeds are about 10-12 MB/sec, but when I copy files using Windows the write speeds are about 25-30 MB/sec.

Exact same files, tried all three ports on my netbook and even timed it to see if the speeds are by any chance miscalculated by either operating system and Ubuntu is definitely writing at half the speed.

So what could be the problem? When I had Windows on this Netbook I never got had a problem with write speeds so I don't think it is a hardware issue.

Ubuntu :: Slow Write Speeds On Mdadm RAID 5 Array

Mar 3, 2010

I have a 4 drive RAID 5 array set up using mdadm. The system is stored on a seperate physical disk outside of the array. When reading from the array its fast but when writing to the array its extremely slow, down to 20MB/Sec compared to 125MB/Sec reading. It does a bit then pauses, then writes a bit more and then pauses again and so on.The test i did was to copy a 5GB file from the RAID to another spare non-raid disk on the system average speed 126MB/s. Copying it back on to the RAID (in another folder) the speed was 20MB/s.The other thing is very slow several KB/s write speed copying from eSATA drive to the RAID.

Ubuntu :: Very Slow Write Speeds To USB External Hard Drive?

Oct 11, 2010

I'm trying to back up my hard drive to a 2 TB WD external so that I can do a clean install of 10.10, however I'm getting tremendously slow write speeds. It hovers around 1.5 MB/s and steadily slows from there. It tells me it will take 150+ hours to transfer 400 GB of data.

I have a AMD quad core processor and 8 gigs of ddr3 ram... USB 2.0... I feel this should go much faster.

What is your experience with NFS and how can I speed up large file/folder transfer(write) speeds?

Ubuntu :: Write Access On Raid5 Mount And Network Access

Apr 22, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:

Code:
/dev/md0 /media/raid auto rw,user,auto,exec 0 0
After i mounted it, i changed the permission with:

Code:
sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/
So now i can create folders and files on it.
Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.

Now the questions:

1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".

2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?

Server :: Recreate A Raid5 MD0 Into A Raid5 MD3?

Jan 9, 2010

I have no drive failures but just need to recreate a raid5 set as the next free MD disk number. Originally I built a temp OS of debian on a single drive and had 4x2TB drives in a raid5 software array (MD0) this worked fine and allowed me to move all data to it, and remove our old fileserver. I have now pulled out the 4 x 2TB Raid 5 drives and created a new OS on two new 80GB drives, partioned as follows,

MD0 is now 250mb Raid1 as /boot
MD1 is 4GB Raid1 Swap
MD2 is 76GB Raid1 as /

If I turn off and push back in the 4x2TB drives I cannot see a MD3. I presume I would need to create a MD3 from these 4 drives but I dont want to mess things up as its live data. So im here asking for help, or a bit of hand holding to get it done right.

PS - Its a Debian Lenny 5.0.3 Raid1 fresh install replacing a Debian Lenny 5.0.3 on a single disk.

Ubuntu :: 8.10 - IBM ThinkPad R32 Poor Performance

Feb 8, 2010

i'm trying to run ubuntu 8.10 intrepid ibex on an old hand-me-down laptop that i got from a family member, and i've noticed that the performance is actually much worse than it was on windows xp professional (32-bit).

first of all let me give you my specs:
ibm thinkpad r32
intel mobile pentium 4-m 2.0 ghz
ati radeon mobility m6 (i think this is actually the mobility radeon 7000 igp) with 16mb ram
256 mb ram (pc-2100)

i understand that these are very low performance specs, but it feels like the computer is running very sluggishly even for those specs. the computer ran just fine in windows xp, but is extremely sluggish in ubuntu. it seems like it detected all the hardware just fine, but i feel like it may not be utilizing the cpu and/or video to the extent that it should be. a couple of places where it really seems to struggle is when first opening new programs, viewing flash intensive web 2.0 type webpages (i.e. videos), and listening to music/podcasts (with rhythmbox).

it seems like rhythmbox really kills my performance more than anything else, but the performance is poor all around compared to xp, and i feel like that shouldn't be the case. like i said, i understand that the specs are poor, but it feels like it's not even living up to those specs. i know that 8.10 is old and outdated now, but it's what i had laying around and i figured that it might perform better on this old deprecated laptop than 9.10 would anyway. am i wrong in this assumption? would 9.10 perform better for me?

Fedora Hardware :: USB 3.0 Operating At USB 2.0 Speeds?

Apr 28, 2011

I have enabled the xhci_hcd module, but my usb 3.0 hard disk is still only being recognised at "480MB/s" connection speeds (with benchmarks confirming it is definitely running at usb 2.0 speeds.

The usb 3 controller is the NEC chip everyone seems to be using. The devices is a Seagate free-agent go (something like that anyway) with the usb 3 adapter.

lsusb takes a good couple of minutes to run, and doesn't mention the NEC controller at all, lspci does list it, and devices plugged into it work, but only at usb 2 speeds as mentioned.

I have a relatively high competency with linux (mostly with fedora over the years) so don't worry about solutions or requests that are quite technical.

Happy to provide machine specs if more detail is required, running Fedora 14 x64 with everything up to date. Specs: [URL]
