Jun 3, 2010I never been able to connect to some websites with DEBIAN, but with same computer different LINUX and Windows, As an example Monash University in Australia is one of them.

Debian Configuration :: Network - Cannot Connect To Any Other Websites And Apt Will Not Connect To Any Servers
Feb 18, 2011I am using Squeeze and all appears OK at first... I have a DHCP lease, PING to router works, apache servering fine in and outside the network, Epiphany seems to connects to default debian.org only, BUT I cannot connect to any other websites and apt will not connect to any servers. I installed once, tried to fix problem, gave up and reinstalled and still have the same problem.
I unistalled Network Manager thinking that was the problem, but still the same issue. Is there a default firewall blocking certain connections or am I missing something I'm supposed to know about? I installed some non-free firmware in the beginning of install and all worked... and I connected fine when downloading packages during install.

Jun 15, 2010When I go out of town I normally take my Acer Netbook to travel light. I ran into a problem over the weekend which I have seen before and couldn't find the cause. I used the wifi at the house I was staying at and could connect to the router via Wicd and ping outside IP addresses, however, I could not connect to any websites with Iceweasel or Midori. I receive the generic error that the browser is unable to connect. Now that I am back at my house I cannot repeat the problem, but have found a couple threads about disabling ipv6 protocol. The symptoms sound like a browser setting, but I couldn't find any settings that looked unusual.

Dec 29, 2010I was having no problems (that I knew of) browsing the web since installing Ubuntu 10.10 a week or so ago. I was previously trialling Win7 as my customers will likely be using that in the future. Then I wanted to go to internode.on.net. As it was just after Christmas I thought it must be down, for upgrades or maintenance etc. I later tried to go to Freebsd.org; same error. I've been having a small number of other websites give the same error. I thought nothing of this until I tried it on my wife's macpro. I could log onto all the websites I wanted to and none gave any indication of having been down. Both boxes are on the same adsl connection. I still can't access internode or freebsd on 10.10 yet have been able to access every website on OSX. Now, I was only looking at them for info but am worried I won't be able to access something important. (so far everything I 'need' is working)
ping just drops out. edit: weirdest thing! I just retried and now can not emulate the problem for internode. freebsd still won't show. that is less than five minutes between problems and resolution! Debian :: Avahi Blocks Websites / Unblock Those?
Nov 8, 2010I am using my netbook with Squeeze when I travel. I recently started getting a msg "Network discovery service has been disabled" or something to that effect. And many websites have been blocked as well. I discovered that I could remove avahi-daemon to fix it and I have done so. Unfortunately, the websites are still blocked even though I no longer get the msg. I could not even post this msg here with Linux and had to boot with Windows to do it. It is a shame. Can someone please tell me how to unblock those websites.

Nov 18, 2010I am having no luck configuring ProFTPd on a Debian Lenny production server we use to host our MySQL databases and a few websites. I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".
It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.

Fedora :: Yum Works But Websites Don't?
Mar 9, 2011I was using Fedora 14, and yum works. However websites like [URL] don't unless I open a terminal and type "ping google.com" then copy that ip address into the web browser.
This doesn't seems to be JUST a fedora issue. I haven't tried fedora 15 alpha, but OpenSuse 11.4 seems to have the same exact problem except Zypper/yast don't work.
Many of yum's servers don't work but eventually after a couple of failures to accept the connection it finally works. Very odd. I tested the latest Kubuntu and it does work as does my windows partition.
(I should also add that this problem also exist in virtualbox).

I changed my dns server to open dns then google dns but did not solve the problem.I have a dsl connection with automatic dhcp. Well i went to to download my favorite browser Opera and firefox just times out. I can get to other websites just fine so far. Though it looks like Office Depot won't let me in either. If I boot into Windows I can connect to either site just fine.

And i have been in the situation myself when my connection went down and was piggy backing on my neighbours for a while. It's a sky BB router btw.
