Debian :: Can't Seem To Install Codecs For Mplayer
Mar 9, 2011
I have an mkv file that I'm trying to player with mplayer, but no video is showing up. Mplayer was installed using apt-get install mplayer since ./configure when I try to build mplayer gives me a bunch of garbage:
Current branch master is up to date.
Detected operating system: Linux
Detected host architecture: i386
[code]....
But, after installing mplayer using apt-get, I can't get any video for the file I'm trying to play. I've tried copying the files from "all-20110131.tar.bz2" to /usr/local/lib/codecs but I still don't even get a box for video. Everything works fine using the built in movie player--even the subtitles are shown correctly.

When I try playing a movie using mplayer, it says The following plugins are required
MPEG -1 Layer 3 decoder
Divx mpeg-4 version 5 decoder
or
could not determine the type of stream
In the first case, clicking on the search option, error occurs (probably because of the proxy I am working behind) I can use yum install though behing the proxy. How can install these codecs from the command line ?

i'm running a 32bit system installed slackware 13.1.
i'd like to watch a 720p movie but it doesn't run smoothly. so i tried to install the coreavc codecs.
Did all these instructions step by step:
1- http://code.google.com/p/coreavc-for...erInstallation
2- http://code.google.com/p/coreavc-for...wserverInstall
3- http://code.google.com/p/coreavc-for...ConfigureCodec
never got an error mesage. In my ~/.mplayer/config file I also added vc=coreserve,.
If I start the 720p movie, there aren't any changes. It is still jerking.
I'm not sure that MPlayer is really using the codecs, how can I look if it is using it or not?

Does GNU/Linux have separate video codecs like Windows has? Or all the codecs in GNU are built in video-players?

I was playing around on my ibook g4 and thought I would try out Midori. I was pleasantly surprised to see it would allow an html5 applet to open on ...... Sadly, the video never begins playing, so I believe I must need to install the non-free codecs package...if it does indeed contain h.264.
I've used Ubuntu off and on over the years, so my knowledge of how to do a lot things is quite limited. I've been searching online for hours and can not find the information I need to install the non-free codecs...or just h.264 in general. I saw one post about adding medibuntu repositories, but the address relating to nonfree codecs for the ppc gives a 404 when it is going through the apt-get update in the terminal.

Found this [URL] supposed to be from the mplayer project. This seems to contain more codecs than in the codec32 package in medibuntu. I am wondering if this is safe to install.
