Debian :: Are There Any Good Screen Recorders?
Mar 22, 2011
Because a lot of them either refuse to install because of incompatibility for 64-bit Operating systems or they just don't work very well for recording video games, such as TF2.I found one, but it appears to have been abandoned for some reason, what a shame. It's GLC, but I can't figure out how to record WINE apps. I can't figure out what to record. The wiki tells me to record a "wine-pthread" but it says that it can't be executed nor is there such a file that exists on my computer. Are there any more options other than GLC? Or could I get some help with it?

I have assembled an "old" PC I want to attach to my 32" Sony TV. Mainly for browsing, watching videos, playing casual games. Is there a special Desktop theme suited for big screen ? In other words: Big icons, big text? Not sure if Unity helps out here. I would be willing to install another desktop manager (e.g. XFCE, KDE) than Gnome if it provides such features. Firefox for examples supports increased font size for browsing. For shell I've played around with guake and font sizes around 20 pix. It just would be nice to have "enlarged" menu entries.

I have a web cam made by a company called trust. This is the first time I am trying to install a web cam on Debian or Linux as a matter of fact. I am running Squeeze. After doing some google search it seems a lot people are using a program called "gspca". I downloaded it but I came here to see if someone has a better idea on how to have a web cam working.

I tried to make a Debian netinst install disc. I tried two different computers with multiple settings. I also tried different brands of CDs. All resulted in corruption. I am using AT&T Broadband (if it matters). I also tried two different CD drives on the future Linux Box. What am I doing wrong?

I'm looking for a USB-connected webcam that works ok with linux and performs well with outdoor lighting. My goal is simple: I want to connect it to my Debian router, point it out of the window and grab frames off the cam and make it available on a web page.I've got the setup working ok with some prehistoric cam, but the image is terrible. (It's a HW issue - the cam. is junk.) So I'd like to get a better cam.I know there are cams built specifically for this usage, but it's above my price range. For me, the most expensive I'm willing to go is the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 for Business (~130 USD in a local store), or preferably cheaper. I don't want/need any sort of enclosure for outdoors, as the cam will be indoors, behind a window.
Also, I wonder how does focusing work with linux. The only webcam I've ever had had a manual focus ring. Some of the cams claim to have autofocus. I guess it's host controlled. That probably doesn't work in Linux. (?) Anyway, for my usage, autofocus would be in the way, I suppose. (I don't want it to try to focus on the sheet of glass in front of the cam. )

All my friends say, OpenSuse is the best distro. I have tried it, but I just can't make it work for me. I have a lot of problems touchpad not working properly, wireless, it crashes. It looks good, but I need a distro which will work on my dell Vostro 1700. I have found Ubuntu (gnome) best for my laptop, but I would like to try (KDE) something more polished like OpenSuse. A distro which works like a charm.

New Fedora 15 user today and I noticed that FireFox 4.0.1 looks like it was written in the late 90's. I'm using KDE 4. See pic: What's causing this? Is it possible to do something about it? BTW, I installed Gnome 3 and KDE 4. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I tried a lot of web browsers, but I can't find a good one.
I want a web browser that:
- can open most webpages and show all content including javascript, flash and whatever (unlike elinks which is text-only)
- is controllable entirely by keyboard and preferably with vim-like controls. (unlike firefox, google chrome).
- works out of the box (unlike uzbl)
- is fast
- is bugfree (unlike firefox and uzbl)
- is configurable
So please recommend a good web browser and tell me what features would make a web browser good.

I heard that Simple Backup 0.10.4 has bugs that doesn't allow it to create backups or replace them well.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Is it true?
If so, what do you advise me to run in my Server to create regular backups of my shared folders with Win7 machines? I want it to make full backups not incremental ones if possible. and it has to be free, because i have to use it in a small enterprise.

i am using xubuntu and love it so far! fast and stable, but i have a question. i am not a big gamer, just a few casual games, i am also not an office document user. i do not use openoffice.org or libreoffice, i just have my basic text editor. i do not do any web developing or anything. basically i reply to and send a few emails a day. i use gmail for that, not an email program, i use facebook a few times a day. i watch a few tv shows online. i videos occasionally, and i post on these forums. but my computer feels empty, is there any good programs i can just play around with. conky was one, its alright, a little confusing though. is there just any fun programs to play with. i don't care what they are, work processors, or web browsers, just some oddball programs or something? heck i don't know, i am just bored on my pc and looking for some entertainment.

I plan to design a general framework for structural optimization.I already have a pre-processor module that I can call in batch mode, a Finite Elements Solver, and a heuristic non gradient based optimizer that can process the outputs of the solver, so as to adjust some input variables in the pre-processing phase ( geometry and topological definitions of my structure ).
I would like to parse the huge ammout of data that is released by the solver ( an ascii text file) to filter out some reauired results in some specific points ( maximum allowable deflections or stresses within my structure ) since it is this infoemation that will be fed to the optimizer engine so as to feedback on the quality of the changes made in the topological definition. The only way to do this in batch mode is with awk, or with sed..
