The default gzip somefilename.pdf gives hardly 10% in the pdf. Any ideas anybody ?

General :: Control Gzip Compression Rates While Archiving Files With Tar?
Jun 4, 2011I have a script which periodically backs up a directory using the command "tar -czvf [name] [directory]" but my problem is that the script has recently been putting a lot of stress on the server (Minecraft SMP) and tends to lag players as it backs up, which recently has been taking nearly 5 minutes.So I need to know if there's a way to control the GZip compression rate at the same time that it archives and backs up the files?I understand that I can first tar the files and then GZip them separately with a different compression rate afterwards, but this would not work because it names the files with the current server time, which sometimes changes in between commands.

Jul 18, 2010I am running ubuntu 10.4 lts desktop and ubuntu 9.10 server with the gui active. On both of these machines the data transfer rates over usb and lan have slowed down quite considerably. Also over multiple devices, not the same hardware everytime I try to transfer something.

Feb 5, 2010I just got Ubuntu 9.10 CD from the Canonical Ltd. I started to Install Ubuntu 9.10.
It asked me to Select a language then it started loading
After a minute or two the screen showed some errors and my monitor showed an error non-supported refresh rates 35.xx KHz / 75.x Hz
I dont remember the exact numbers but this is the error. This error is generated by monitor's hardware not ubuntu.

#2 my creative x-fi music card worked for 4 days and now ubuntu sees it but uses the internal instead, I can't access the x-fi through the soundcard preferences. I'm using 10.04

Oct 11, 2010Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat".
Install went through smoothly in both my laptop and an old Dell Optiplex GX 270.
Screen looks fine on laptop but terrible on the Dell. It's stuck on Refresh rate of 60Hz and flickers pretty bad. 60Hz is the only rate offered! How can I change the refresh rate to ~65-72Hz like is possible on earlier Ubuntu versions to ease eye strain?

However, I don't want to limit the former. FWIW, I expect about as much traffic as a country road in the middle of nowhere, and my bandwidth for requests is 15 Mbps (Don't laugh. Content delivery is a pathetic 2 Mbps. That's a residential cable connection for ya...)Of all the tutorials/examples, I chose to go with Rusty Russel's limits, though they're dated 2002. Debian :: Are There Any Good Screen Recorders?
Mar 22, 2011Because a lot of them either refuse to install because of incompatibility for 64-bit Operating systems or they just don't work very well for recording video games, such as TF2.I found one, but it appears to have been abandoned for some reason, what a shame. It's GLC, but I can't figure out how to record WINE apps. I can't figure out what to record. The wiki tells me to record a "wine-pthread" but it says that it can't be executed nor is there such a file that exists on my computer. Are there any more options other than GLC? Or could I get some help with it?

Patched libcairo and better still.Back to Openbox i cant achieve the same result..no matter what i do, tried fonts.conf but in xfce just looks better....Any tut to appearance in Openbox.....what fonts do you install.

Mar 13, 2010I'm looking for a USB-connected webcam that works ok with linux and performs well with outdoor lighting.My goal is simple: I want to connect it to my Debian router, point it out of the window and grab frames off the cam and make it available on a web page.I've got the setup working ok with some prehistoric cam, but the image is terrible. (It's a HW issue - the cam. is junk.) So I'd like to get a better cam.I know there are cams built specifically for this usage, but it's above my price range. For me, the most expensive I'm willing to go is the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 for Business (~130 USD in a local store), or preferably cheaper. I don't want/need any sort of enclosure for outdoors, as the cam will be indoors, behind a window.
Also, I wonder how does focusing work with linux. The only webcam I've ever had had a manual focus ring. Some of the cams claim to have autofocus. I guess it's host controlled. That probably doesn't work in Linux. (?) Anyway, for my usage, autofocus would be in the way, I suppose. (I don't want it to try to focus on the sheet of glass in front of the cam. )

May 10, 2010All my friends say, OpenSuse is the best distro. I have tried it, but I just can't make it work for me. I have a lot of problems touchpad not working properly, wireless, it crashes. It looks good, but I need a distro which will work on my dell Vostro 1700. I have found Ubuntu (gnome) best for my laptop, but I would like to try (KDE) something more polished like OpenSuse. A distro which works like a charm.

Apr 13, 2011i have about 22 gb of music (mp3 & ogg) on my laptop harddrive.i also have an unused sony mp3 player with a 20 gb hard drive.what i want to do is back up the 22gb into a 20 gb space the music does not need to be playable on the sony player...just using it as a back up device.ok...2 issues:1. when i've tried compressing (tar.gz) mp3 files, little to no space is saved, i assume that a mp3 is pretty compressed already.is there another way to compress effectively ? i dont want to reduce bit rates of the individual music tracks.2. i formatted the sony hd using ext4, but this leaves me with only 16 gb usable space. tried fat32 and this left me with about 18gb.

If I, under M$, turn on the NTFS compression, will that drive still work under LINUX?
My thought is that it won't as I haven't seen any control in LINUX for it.

Sep 13, 2010I use mplayer to play my media files. Occasionally I want to take screenshots of media I am playing. I use the -vf screenshot option to take screenshots which generates shotxxxx.png. The issue is that all those png are not compressed and usually large. When dealing with Hi-Def media they are extremely large, each is 4-5 MB in size at the least. Is there a way I can set the option for compression of png images. If I use imagemagick the same files get compressed to like 1.5MB of png file.
