After upgrading to 5.6 I was trying things out and noticed for some reason the php on my server has stopped working. Anybody have a clue what's wrong ? I did read the release and it did mention the upgrade would then change my php.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI recently migrated my mail server over to a new machine. For some reason, after verifying that the OIDs are correct, MRTG won't graph anything. I've quadruple checked the OIDs and used the strings as well, it won't graph at all. Graphs for RAM, ethernet, packets, etc. are working. CPU is the only thing not working. They work when I use snmpwalk with them and they do populate values. The logs show unknown SNMP vars for cores 1 & 2, but there's no mention of cores 3 & 4 entries in the logs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it just me, or has 'lock screen' stopped working in a recent update? I updated my install today and after rebooting I can't lock the screen... the screen saver doesn't lock it and if I select 'lock screen' manually from the menu then... nothing happens.
I even created a new user in case there was something weird in my configuration, but logged in as them I can't lock the screen either.
This is obviously a bit of an issue in an office environment as I don't want to have to log out every time I leave my desk.
We are running CentOS 5.4 x86 on ESX 4 Server. We have a busy Help Desk, a Forum and several name-based websites running. Weve been using CentOS for this 'purpose for several years (different versions) and so far we have never had a problem. On Saturday, I applied all the latest updates including the Kernel updates. I rebooted the server and all seemed well until Sunday morning when I didn't get my Logwatch in the mail. Then I got a telephone call from a customer asking me why I hadn't responded to a Trouble Ticket he had created on Saturday afternoon (creating a TT sends an email via sendmail to all the support staff). I did a few tests and sendmail has just stopped working. The Logwatch had been created and had been sent to root, but all mail for root is redirected to my Mail Server on e different box (GroupWise). There was nothing wrong with the mail server, but sendmail has just stopped.
Fortunately I had created a snapshot before I applied the updates, so I reverted back to the snapshot and mail started working again, but I lost 2 days info because I had run the backup before I applied the patches. Now I see there are 132 Updates available, but there is obviously a problem somewhere in there!
I built the system with one name and now want to change it.I do the usual things. change the /etc/hosts file change the hostname with the command hostname newname changed /etc/sysconfig/network and then mail stops working. Put it back to the old name and it works fine.So I am guessing I am missing something in the configuration for sendmail. I checked the sendmail.cf file under /etc/mail and no reference back to the hostname was found.I also tried the GUI on the console to change the hostbname.

I have made sure the card is not muted using kmix, alsamixer, and running alsaunmute 0. It was working for some time and just stopped. I am not sure if getting rdesktop to work on the laptop caused the issue or not since that seems to be the last major thing I did. (missing my sipie.py). This is what I am working with:

The machine has completed more than 30 hours of HD cleaning with DBAN (overwrites the HD). It used to be able to run F9 or Ubuntu 8.04 but always returned kernel panic during other distro installation attempts. Why after a complete HD clean though?
I've been administrating a dedicated Linux CentOS 5 (Linux 2.6.26.5-rootserver-20080917a) server for around 2 years, and although not a network or Linux expert, been learning to configure as need arises. Primarily using Plesk for day-to-day, but occasionally using Putty to SSH into server.
For all the time I've had the server, I've been connecting to my server via sFTP using "root" password. ( Although, I know this is really bad practice, I assume made safer by connecting with SSH FTP)
After spending another normal day in the office developing websites, connecting to my server as root using SFTP in Filezilla AND Dreamweaver I left for the night.
Returned next morning, after having done no manual updates or amends to my server; I could no longer SFTP into my server?
Thought it may be related to my office network, so tried it from home over the weekend, same result; can no longer connect SFTP for root?
I can connect to the server via Putty using my "root" username and password.
After spending hours looking on the internet for a solution, I'm lost for ideas as I didn't make any changes?
What happens when I open my Filezilla and try connecting as SFTP is it states:
Error:Connection timed out
Error:Could not connect to server
I checked server log /var/log/secure and it states:
Accepted password for root from UNKNOWN port 49212 ssh2
Apr 9 07:41:41 s15320264 sshd[7122]: fatal: Write failed: Connection reset by peer
Odd part is, it's worked fine for weeks, months without ever failing to connect?
Also, notice that Putty connection seems to take much longer to authenticate root user than it used to?
Checked via Plesk Health Monitoring and all CPU, Memory and Disk Levels are well below any alarm levels.
I have run all Plesk updates to 10.2.0 in the hope that it resolved it, but to no avail.
Its been a while (maybe too long) since I last used yum to check for updates / install anything on my server, but when I tried the other day I got the following response:
# yum list updates
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up repositories
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates[code]......
Trying other mirror.Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: updates
A few weeks ago there were some network changes, but nothing else should have changed OS side.I have checked /etc/resolv.conf and that looks ok - ping and wget have no problem resolving hostnames.I tried setting enabled=0 in yhe .repos files - this allowed me to do a 'yum list', but 'yum list updates' returned an empty list - I am definitely not 100% up to date!
P.S. Attachment not there at the moment - getting the following error when I try to upload the zip file...Errors Returned While Uploading
Failed to open directory with write permission: /var/wwwthtml/oldwebcopy.centos.org/uploads/newbb
How do I know what sound system my Centos 5.5 install is using and how would I configure which soundcard output to use? I want to use the digital coax output from my M-Audio PCI soundcard, which appears to be detected and loaded. When I launch MPD, it autodetects an alsa sound system, but programs like alsamixer don't exist and I can't hear any sound out of the digital coax output. I haven't checked the 3.5mm stereo out yet.A little confused as to which documentation to be looking at at this point.

* The system is Supermicro X6DVL-G mainboard with two Nocona Xeons @ 2,8 GHz, 2 GB DDR333 RAM, 2x160GB Seagate ST3160827AS SATA HDD, ATi RAGE 128 VGA and an external LG USB DVD drive.

I've tried FreeBSD, PC-BSD and now CentOS 5.3. The BSD based OSes installed and ran with no problem but I had trouble configuring them and I decided to move to something little more familiar. However the BSDs didn't detect the integrated Promise RAID controller but CentOS had no problem with that. After some fight with the initial setup I've managed to made it recognizing the external DVD and install the OS. I'm using the whole stripe for the OS, leaving the linux to determine and create the partitions. The installation went smoothly with no errors, but after restart I get the POST messages and then... NOTHING! No error, no panic, nothing, just a blinking cursor. The first thought, confirmed later by several posts I've read, it's the integrated RAID controller making the issue.
Well, I removed the stripe, disabled the controller from the BIOS and installed again, this time with the two separate disks - the sda is bootable with swap and ext3 and sdb is spare with ext3. THE SAME... Third time - only sda is configured for istallation - again NOTHING. Fourth time - sda is configured for installation and No Bootloader option is selected - SAME.
When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.
how can I remove old kernel updates? Should I delete not usable kernel files from /boot ?
grub.conf was manual changed, here new config:

Yesterday I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 by a clean install. My laptop is an acer aspire 5050 with a IEEE 802.11 b/g Wlan wireless card. I am using only Ubuntu in my laptop. Today I noticed that wireless is dead. The indicator is off and I can see that there is not detection of any wireless networks in the "Wireless Networks" menu. In this point I must inform you that I didn't experience any wireless problems with the two previous versions of Ubuntu (9.10 & 10.04). Below you can see the outputs (in italic format) of some commands that I peformed in terminal:

I have a clean installation of Ubuntu Server 10.04 x64 on an HP Proliant DL380 G3. It has two Broadcom NICs in addition to its ILO. During the installation, both NICs were listed... but neither was able to pull DHCP, nor did they function with manual settings. The first NIC is currently connected and is known good. So I left it alone and figured I'd troubleshoot it later (which is now). This server is going to be a VMware Server host. I wanted to install ESXi on it, but it doesn't like the old server's cheap ICH RAID controller.

I noticed here it says they're disabled. so I thought perhaps this was a 64-bit driver issue. So, I booted my trusty Ubuntu desktop 10.04 32-bit live cd, and the NIC works fine. Now, here's where it gets weird. Seeing that, I booted it to Ubuntu server 10.04 32-bit installation from a flash drive, expecting to see the NICs working fine during the installation.
I just did a clean install of the newest version of Ubuntu (11.4?) on my Sony Vaio CW. I was able to use the WiFi at my friends house where I installed it. At home when I entered the pass for the internet it would try connecting and five minutes later be back asking for the pass again. It won't connect at my house or my grandparent's house. They both have a protected internet but my friend does also and I was able to connect to his.

Installed F12 a while back. Everything was working fine. Then I wanted to install perl-cpan, so when I run "yum install perl-cpan", or "yum update", it hangs on "Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit".
I've let it hang there for hours, nothing ever happens.
For the first week or so, Yum worked fine, I could manually update as I've done on other Fedora versions without any issue.
In the Gnome gui I have automatic updating disabled. As far as I can tell, yum-updatesd isn't running and isn't enabled. I wanted to update things manually for a while until I got this new box "settled in".
I know I can install cpan via other methods, but this strange behavior with Yum has me worried.
I ran all the "yum clean" commands, and now yum actually displays errors:
Trying other mirror.
I get these errors over and over.
I read up on how to edit the /etc/yum/fedora.repo and fedora-update.repo files to fix this, BUT, I have no such files...
This is what I have:
The other interesting thing is that my /var/log/yum.log is 0 bytes.
Yet the yum.log-20100101 is 209709 bytes and shows all the updates I did just a month ago...
Where can I download the repo files from? How can I fix the repository?
When I try "yum repolist" I get the same errors.
I am new to Opensuse, I used Fedora for more than a year and installed OS 11.4 64bit to experience the awesome KDE that Opensuse offers.
