CentOS 5 Server :: SFTP Login For "root" Stopped Working?
Apr 9, 2011
I've been administrating a dedicated Linux CentOS 5 (Linux 2.6.26.5-rootserver-20080917a) server for around 2 years, and although not a network or Linux expert, been learning to configure as need arises. Primarily using Plesk for day-to-day, but occasionally using Putty to SSH into server.
For all the time I've had the server, I've been connecting to my server via sFTP using "root" password. ( Although, I know this is really bad practice, I assume made safer by connecting with SSH FTP)
After spending another normal day in the office developing websites, connecting to my server as root using SFTP in Filezilla AND Dreamweaver I left for the night.
Returned next morning, after having done no manual updates or amends to my server; I could no longer SFTP into my server?
Thought it may be related to my office network, so tried it from home over the weekend, same result; can no longer connect SFTP for root?
I can connect to the server via Putty using my "root" username and password.
After spending hours looking on the internet for a solution, I'm lost for ideas as I didn't make any changes?
What happens when I open my Filezilla and try connecting as SFTP is it states:
Error:Connection timed out
Error:Could not connect to server
I checked server log /var/log/secure and it states:
Accepted password for root from UNKNOWN port 49212 ssh2
Apr 9 07:41:41 s15320264 sshd[7122]: fatal: Write failed: Connection reset by peer
Odd part is, it's worked fine for weeks, months without ever failing to connect?
Also, notice that Putty connection seems to take much longer to authenticate root user than it used to?
Checked via Plesk Health Monitoring and all CPU, Memory and Disk Levels are well below any alarm levels.
I have run all Plesk updates to 10.2.0 in the hope that it resolved it, but to no avail.

sometime ago i have setup a nice Debian FTP server. and left the company. everything was working fine for about 5 month, administrator was able to login to root, do changes and manage system, etc. Suddenly he told me that he cannot login via PUTTY, the root user and pass say Access Denied.Looked all over the web for at least a REASON, but did not find anything. I suggested to go and do passwd reset, via runLevel 1. i hope this helps him. But i am still curious why all of the sudden, in a locked down room, where only one person has access root get disabled.

On my Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS webserver I desperately want to disable the Root account. But at the moment I am unable because I prefer to use Nautilus/Dolphin on my home laptop for SFTP. The graphical interface also helps when comparing multiple config files at once, something that being limited to NANO or PICO would make extremely painful. The problem is that if I don't use ROOT I can't perform any SSH or SFTP actions with a graphical interface, because I can't use SUDO without the terminal. Does anyone else leave root enabled? I have a non-standard port, disabled password authentication in favor of ssh keys, and I have a tarpit configured

My mail server stopped working this weekend, when I got in today I restarted and all the emails came through. The panic_log shows: daemon: accept process fork failed: Cannot allocate memory several times over the course of a few minutes. Can anyone give me advice on troubleshooting this one?

Just completed a fresh install if V5.3. It works fine.
Samba server: I tried to create a Samba user named "root" with Windows user name "administrator". Message is something like "account already exists"? I know "root" exists, but why can't I use it as a login? I don't get this error when I use another existing user account "LouA".
This is important to me because many documents state that "root" is to be used as the user name. I don't want to change these.
Current set-up allows access to all users (there is no Samba user listed) and I can read, write and delete files from Windows just fine.

I've not been having any luck at all finding the answer to this, so thought I'd ask here: is there any way to get my servers to send an email when someone logs in through SFTP? I was able to get that to work with SSH using a simple bit of script in /etc/profile, but I can't find anything on Google about doing that with SFTP at all.
The OpenSSH version on my server is 5.2p1 running on FreeBSD 8.0. Any way to get the server to execute any command on SFTP login will be enough for me to get this set up.

As a Windows user, I generated a pair of DSA keys from CoreFTP Lite and sent it to a third party that runs an SFTP server. They told me that a valid DSA key needs to have ssh-dsa at the start and the username@systemname at the end. CoreFTP generated neither the ssh-dsa header nor the username@systemname footer. I tried with WinSCP and it didn't generate them either. Is there a difference between how SFTP works between Windows and Linux? If I put a useraccount@systemname at the end of the text will it work? How would the Linux system validate that my system is called "systemname"? If it can't validate, what is the purpose of adding it?

I haven't used my VB for a few weeks however all of a sudden it refuses to work for my normal non-root user. It's almost as if it can't find libraries in the /opt/VirtualBox directory. Initially it refused to start completely so I linked the required libs into /usr/lib64 ( yip real hack. Then it started but a vm would not start, and comes up with an error about a missing lib again which is definitely there. My non-root user is in the vb group and nothing besides system updates has changed. vb 3.2.10 slack64-current.

For some reason my bash autocomplete stopped working. I get the error when I try to cd into a directory, pressing <tab> for autocomplete:
cd A-sh: <( compgen -d -- 'A' ): No such file or directory
Autocomplete works for the root user and for the other user on the machine, just not logged in as this user. The .bashrc file looks fine to me, and I didn't make any changes to it to even cause the bash autocomplete to stop working (as far as I know).
# enable programmable completion features (you don't need to enable
# this, if it's already enabled in /etc/bash.bashrc and /etc/profile
# sources /etc/bash.bashrc).
if [ -f /etc/bash_completion ]; then
. /etc/bash_completion
fi
What else could cause autcomplete to stop working? I log in via ssh, btw.

I set up my vsftpd server, but when using "sftp servername" it's not using vsftpd but another (what seems like) built-in sftp server. Even when I stop the vsftpd service I am still able to get a prompt to log in. I haven't installed any other ftp servers.

Ubuntu has stopped booting correctly. Now it shows the Ubuntu logo and then, instead of GDM, it shows a console login prompt. How do I go about troubleshooting this?'m in Windows XP (which I like a lot better than Ubuntu, because it actually works) but all my files and work are on my Linux partition.

I have been using my system for couple of weeks, and normally update software when the icon is displayed on top bar (gnome). Last couple of days there were updates for X, and I am not sure whether that is the cause of my problem. Once bootup, I get the login screen. When enter the password the login screen keep coming back. there is no error about any password issue, or anything. It keeps prompt me to enter the password.
I could login back the following way.
1. ctrl + alt + F1 , and login with the same username/pwd as for X
2.change to root
3.pkill gdm3
4.exit from root to user privilege
5. startx
The system starts X correctly and no login screen is displayed. I could use the system as usual.
The only thing I did custom to my system was upgrading to the latest kernel (2.6.38) using the source. This was to get support for my hardware, but that was about a month ago. I do not see anything in /var/log (X, demesg etc).

Running CentOS release 5.4
We currently run a web server that allows FTP connections. I want to:
1. Disable FTP on our web server and require sftp only.
2. See if we can create a table of sites that are allowed to connect to the web server using sftp. Or should I just do this at the firewall?

I have configured rssh 2.3 with openssh 5.8 on RHEL 5.6 64 bit to restrict the users to scp and sftp. When i try to sftp or scp it gives error connection closed. After long googling tried different solutions like add missing libraries, setuid to rssh_helper. I had full copy of /lib to /chroot/lib and /chroot/lib64 but no success. conf and log files are below for reference.

I recently migrated my mail server over to a new machine. For some reason, after verifying that the OIDs are correct, MRTG won't graph anything. I've quadruple checked the OIDs and used the strings as well, it won't graph at all. Graphs for RAM, ethernet, packets, etc. are working. CPU is the only thing not working. They work when I use snmpwalk with them and they do populate values. The logs show unknown SNMP vars for cores 1 & 2, but there's no mention of cores 3 & 4 entries in the logs.

Is it just me, or has 'lock screen' stopped working in a recent update? I updated my install today and after rebooting I can't lock the screen... the screen saver doesn't lock it and if I select 'lock screen' manually from the menu then... nothing happens.
I even created a new user in case there was something weird in my configuration, but logged in as them I can't lock the screen either.
This is obviously a bit of an issue in an office environment as I don't want to have to log out every time I leave my desk.

We are running CentOS 5.4 x86 on ESX 4 Server. We have a busy Help Desk, a Forum and several name-based websites running. Weve been using CentOS for this 'purpose for several years (different versions) and so far we have never had a problem. On Saturday, I applied all the latest updates including the Kernel updates. I rebooted the server and all seemed well until Sunday morning when I didn't get my Logwatch in the mail. Then I got a telephone call from a customer asking me why I hadn't responded to a Trouble Ticket he had created on Saturday afternoon (creating a TT sends an email via sendmail to all the support staff). I did a few tests and sendmail has just stopped working. The Logwatch had been created and had been sent to root, but all mail for root is redirected to my Mail Server on e different box (GroupWise). There was nothing wrong with the mail server, but sendmail has just stopped.
Fortunately I had created a snapshot before I applied the updates, so I reverted back to the snapshot and mail started working again, but I lost 2 days info because I had run the backup before I applied the patches. Now I see there are 132 Updates available, but there is obviously a problem somewhere in there!

I built the system with one name and now want to change it.I do the usual things. change the /etc/hosts file change the hostname with the command hostname newname changed /etc/sysconfig/network and then mail stops working. Put it back to the old name and it works fine.So I am guessing I am missing something in the configuration for sendmail. I checked the sendmail.cf file under /etc/mail and no reference back to the hostname was found.I also tried the GUI on the console to change the hostbname.
