CentOS 5 :: Mail Server Stopped Working - Cannot Allocate Memory
Jan 21, 2011
My mail server stopped working this weekend, when I got in today I restarted and all the emails came through. The panic_log shows: daemon: accept process fork failed: Cannot allocate memory several times over the course of a few minutes. Can anyone give me advice on troubleshooting this one?
I built the system with one name and now want to change it.I do the usual things. change the /etc/hosts file change the hostname with the command hostname newname changed /etc/sysconfig/network and then mail stops working. Put it back to the old name and it works fine.So I am guessing I am missing something in the configuration for sendmail. I checked the sendmail.cf file under /etc/mail and no reference back to the hostname was found.I also tried the GUI on the console to change the hostbname.
While Apache is off, then everything is OK, but if I start apache server after some time I get messages "Unable to fork: Cannot allocate memory" when trying to do some commands with ssh(dir,rm,top and so on).
Evolution e-mail has stopped working. Un-installed everything evolution using Synaptic and re-installed. No change: address book comes up but mail, calendar etc do not work. Clicking on any causes gray out and leads to a force quit. So how do I un-install evolution completely and then re-install as a completely fresh install. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.
i just recently installed ubuntu 10.04 onto my laptop. its running as a dual boot. i only allocated about 10gb of memory and have already run out. is it possible to allocate more memory afterwards
and another bug that i am having is my shift key is not functioning properly. if anyone happens to know this issue too. so i can't do exclamations of periods, capitalizations, etc... how would you remap your keyboard
I have mounter ubuntu karmic 9.10 on a XP sp3 using vmware,i wanted to move some files through share.everything went well for 2 hours then i keep getting Cannot allocate memory.
I'm running a quite complex model, and it's taking me around a week to complete the run, and one of my colleagues says that he can run it in one-two days. After looking to several forums to know how does it work, I've seen how the memory is used (using the command ps -A --sort -rss -o comm, pme), and the model run just takes 0,3% of the memory. I bought a 4 cores and 8gb of RAM laptop to be able to run the model fast, but I don't know how to allocate the use of the memory to concentrate it in developing that task. Is that possible?
I am running BWA (burrow-wheeler alignment) and, keep getting an error that there isn't enough memory allocated. How do I change the memory allocation? I'm working on a good quality desktop only a little over a year old, so having the memory shouldn't be the problem.
Can anyone tell me is there a way to add more than 2GB memory application in a 32 bit server? I found on many threads that it is not possible to set memory limit of a particular application to more than 2GB. I am using Fedora release 8 and trying to add more than 2GB memory to tomcat. If I modify the variable CATALINA_OPTS in /opt/bobcat/bin/catalina.sh (Startup script of tomcat) and add a value greater than 2GB for memory, tomcat wont start. Is there any work around / Kernel Patches available? Suggestions??
I've been administrating a dedicated Linux CentOS 5 (Linux 2.6.26.5-rootserver-20080917a) server for around 2 years, and although not a network or Linux expert, been learning to configure as need arises. Primarily using Plesk for day-to-day, but occasionally using Putty to SSH into server.
For all the time I've had the server, I've been connecting to my server via sFTP using "root" password. ( Although, I know this is really bad practice, I assume made safer by connecting with SSH FTP)
After spending another normal day in the office developing websites, connecting to my server as root using SFTP in Filezilla AND Dreamweaver I left for the night.
Returned next morning, after having done no manual updates or amends to my server; I could no longer SFTP into my server?
Thought it may be related to my office network, so tried it from home over the weekend, same result; can no longer connect SFTP for root?
I can connect to the server via Putty using my "root" username and password.
After spending hours looking on the internet for a solution, I'm lost for ideas as I didn't make any changes?
What happens when I open my Filezilla and try connecting as SFTP is it states:
Error:Connection timed out Error:Could not connect to server
I checked server log /var/log/secure and it states:
Accepted password for root from UNKNOWN port 49212 ssh2 Apr 9 07:41:41 s15320264 sshd[7122]: fatal: Write failed: Connection reset by peer
Odd part is, it's worked fine for weeks, months without ever failing to connect?
Also, notice that Putty connection seems to take much longer to authenticate root user than it used to?
Checked via Plesk Health Monitoring and all CPU, Memory and Disk Levels are well below any alarm levels.
I have run all Plesk updates to 10.2.0 in the hope that it resolved it, but to no avail.
I've setup my server by following a ton of goods, and it seems to work ok, but I need to start using my server for email in order to receive orders placed via my website. I've followed this guide - [URL] I followed the steps above, and tested the mail server via telnet, and all seemed to be ok. I tried sending an email via Squirrelmail, from cs@thinclientwarehouse.co.uk TO my working email simon@c1systems.co.uk, but the server returned with the following message:
<simon@c1systems.co.uk>: host mail.c1systems.co.uk[95.128.128.129] said: 550-Verification failed for <cs@localhost.thinclientwarehouse.co.uk> 550-The mail server could not deliver mail to cs@localhost.thinclientwarehouse.co.uk. The account or domain may not exist, they may be blacklisted, or missing the proper dns entries. 550 Sender verify failed (in reply to RCPT TO command)
This is a clean install of Debian Lenny, using KDE3.5.10 desktopHave followed these instructions:http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary
Using kernel 2.6.26-2-686, I think the fglrx module has been built correctly. orac:~# modinfo fglrx filename: /lib/modules/2.6.26-2-686/nonfree/fglrx/fglrx.ko
I just switched over to openSUSE about a week ago from Ubuntu and I just purchased an Asus N13 PCI-E wireless network adapter which uses an RALink 2860 chipset. I plugged it in and openSUSE was able to detect it and everything but when I went to go configure it using YaST, it wouldn't be able to scan for networks.
So, I reinstalled my old adapter, downloaded the latest source from RALink and compiled the drivers. When I tried to use insmod on the new .ko that was compiled, I got the "Could not allocate memory" error.
If you need dmsg logs or anything else, I can reinstall the card and get those.
I went to an interview last week and there was this guy who asked a simple question that i have been trying to solve for a couple of days. I tried google but i just cant get the search keywords right. The result were just useless. Well, the question is : "How can we allocate a limited memory to a process before we start its execution" well, the question is related to an X11 system so may be some flags must be set to limit its memory.
I am developing a code where I need to store the planes of an object in a tree & also i need to store it in a list for further processing ... when I try to allocate using malloc the memory allocation when i checked this in internet , I came to know that it may because the memory that I am trying to allocate may be more than the size_t variable.
On my windows console, i have installed sun virtualbox. I only have 768MB ram and so i downloaded a trial version of eboostr. I thought it would work, but when i tried an install of 11.2, also, i tried a debian install, it did the same thing, it froze up in the middle of the install with the error Code: unable to allocate and lock memory. I guess that eboostr doesn't work, but is there a way to use a flash drive as ram in virtual box?
After updating to openSUSE 11.3, and restarting my computer, I placed my computer in sleep(suspend to RAM) mode, and I lost my internet connectivity. I noticed that my computer was only connected through ethernet. After entering "dhclient eth0" in a terminal, I received the following output.
Code:
RTNETLINK answers: Cannot allocate memory
This is the first time that I have had issues with connecting to the Internet using Ethernet.
i have an server which have my site on it, server have an public ip and site works fine..the thing that i done to enable mail server is :
1.select sendmail option as mail server(in joomla). 2.install and configure sendmail in server (which ubuntu installed on it )
**if i use my website locally mail server works fine i can send message and receive , but when i use web site from Internet mail server seems not working at all
I am writing a function(in C language in Linux) to initialize an array of a structure from a mysql table by calling a function by reference but I have a problem with call this function by reference . this is my program:PHP Code:
I have to administer a few mail servers, a mail log server, 4 nameservers and a web server -all running on Centos 5 server distributions. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and mail log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves. I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions:
- How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program? - How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?
i'm trying to send a mail with "mail" on my cent os console , but without success. In Suse it's quite simple with "mail": mail -r sendersaddress@domain -s "subject" targetaddress@domain </tmp/filewithcontent
After upgrading to 5.6 I was trying things out and noticed for some reason the php on my server has stopped working. Anybody have a clue what's wrong ? I did read the release and it did mention the upgrade would then change my php.
I recently migrated my mail server over to a new machine. For some reason, after verifying that the OIDs are correct, MRTG won't graph anything. I've quadruple checked the OIDs and used the strings as well, it won't graph at all. Graphs for RAM, ethernet, packets, etc. are working. CPU is the only thing not working. They work when I use snmpwalk with them and they do populate values. The logs show unknown SNMP vars for cores 1 & 2, but there's no mention of cores 3 & 4 entries in the logs.
Is it just me, or has 'lock screen' stopped working in a recent update? I updated my install today and after rebooting I can't lock the screen... the screen saver doesn't lock it and if I select 'lock screen' manually from the menu then... nothing happens.
I even created a new user in case there was something weird in my configuration, but logged in as them I can't lock the screen either.
This is obviously a bit of an issue in an office environment as I don't want to have to log out every time I leave my desk.
We are running CentOS 5.4 x86 on ESX 4 Server. We have a busy Help Desk, a Forum and several name-based websites running. Weve been using CentOS for this 'purpose for several years (different versions) and so far we have never had a problem. On Saturday, I applied all the latest updates including the Kernel updates. I rebooted the server and all seemed well until Sunday morning when I didn't get my Logwatch in the mail. Then I got a telephone call from a customer asking me why I hadn't responded to a Trouble Ticket he had created on Saturday afternoon (creating a TT sends an email via sendmail to all the support staff). I did a few tests and sendmail has just stopped working. The Logwatch had been created and had been sent to root, but all mail for root is redirected to my Mail Server on e different box (GroupWise). There was nothing wrong with the mail server, but sendmail has just stopped.
Fortunately I had created a snapshot before I applied the updates, so I reverted back to the snapshot and mail started working again, but I lost 2 days info because I had run the backup before I applied the patches. Now I see there are 132 Updates available, but there is obviously a problem somewhere in there!
