CentOS 5 :: Mail Stopped Working After Hostname Change

Aug 18, 2010

I built the system with one name and now want to change it.I do the usual things. change the /etc/hosts file change the hostname with the command hostname newname changed /etc/sysconfig/network and then mail stops working. Put it back to the old name and it works fine.So I am guessing I am missing something in the configuration for sendmail. I checked the sendmail.cf file under /etc/mail and no reference back to the hostname was found.I also tried the GUI on the console to change the hostbname.

CentOS 5 :: How To Change The Hostname

Aug 12, 2010

I have changed my hostname to - ns1.searchdns.net by

1) editing the files /etc/sysconfig/network

2) then run the command - echo "ns1.searchdns.net" > /proc/sys/kernel/hostname

3) then restarted the service /etc/init.d/network restart

I run the command hostname and it returns ns1.searchdns.net. But I am also supposed to modify the /etc/hosts file. I am not sure about this. The content looks like this at the moment

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6
192.168.0.20 abc.com

What should my host file look like now? I am not sure if I should also modify the second line or delete it etc.

Software :: MRTG Stopped Working On CentOS CPU Only?

Feb 25, 2010

I recently migrated my mail server over to a new machine. For some reason, after verifying that the OIDs are correct, MRTG won't graph anything. I've quadruple checked the OIDs and used the strings as well, it won't graph at all. Graphs for RAM, ethernet, packets, etc. are working. CPU is the only thing not working. They work when I use snmpwalk with them and they do populate values. The logs show unknown SNMP vars for cores 1 & 2, but there's no mention of cores 3 & 4 entries in the logs.

CentOS 5 :: Lock Screen Stopped Working?

Sep 21, 2010

Is it just me, or has 'lock screen' stopped working in a recent update? I updated my install today and after rebooting I can't lock the screen... the screen saver doesn't lock it and if I select 'lock screen' manually from the menu then... nothing happens.

I even created a new user in case there was something weird in my configuration, but logged in as them I can't lock the screen either.

This is obviously a bit of an issue in an office environment as I don't want to have to log out every time I leave my desk.

CentOS 5 :: Sendmail Stopped Working After Latest Updates

May 31, 2010

We are running CentOS 5.4 x86 on ESX 4 Server. We have a busy Help Desk, a Forum and several name-based websites running. Weve been using CentOS for this 'purpose for several years (different versions) and so far we have never had a problem. On Saturday, I applied all the latest updates including the Kernel updates. I rebooted the server and all seemed well until Sunday morning when I didn't get my Logwatch in the mail. Then I got a telephone call from a customer asking me why I hadn't responded to a Trouble Ticket he had created on Saturday afternoon (creating a TT sends an email via sendmail to all the support staff). I did a few tests and sendmail has just stopped working. The Logwatch had been created and had been sent to root, but all mail for root is redirected to my Mail Server on e different box (GroupWise). There was nothing wrong with the mail server, but sendmail has just stopped.

Fortunately I had created a snapshot before I applied the updates, so I reverted back to the snapshot and mail started working again, but I lost 2 days info because I had run the backup before I applied the patches. Now I see there are 132 Updates available, but there is obviously a problem somewhere in there!

Ubuntu Servers :: Internal Hostname Appearing In Mail Headers?

Mar 24, 2010

We have an Ubuntu server running on Amazon EC2, hosting a website. We also have postfix, in order to send mail (receiving mail is done by another server which is specified in our MX records). My problem is that the internal hostname of the machine ("domU-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.internal") appears in some "Received:" headers in the emails sent. Is that normal? It seems rather peculiar to me, and I'm thinking some e-mail systems might consider it spam because of this. GMail doesn't consider it spam, but not all systems are as smart as GMail

CentOS 5 Server :: SFTP Login For "root" Stopped Working?

Apr 9, 2011

I've been administrating a dedicated Linux CentOS 5 (Linux 2.6.26.5-rootserver-20080917a) server for around 2 years, and although not a network or Linux expert, been learning to configure as need arises. Primarily using Plesk for day-to-day, but occasionally using Putty to SSH into server.

For all the time I've had the server, I've been connecting to my server via sFTP using "root" password. ( Although, I know this is really bad practice, I assume made safer by connecting with SSH FTP)

After spending another normal day in the office developing websites, connecting to my server as root using SFTP in Filezilla AND Dreamweaver I left for the night.

Returned next morning, after having done no manual updates or amends to my server; I could no longer SFTP into my server?

Thought it may be related to my office network, so tried it from home over the weekend, same result; can no longer connect SFTP for root?

I can connect to the server via Putty using my "root" username and password.

After spending hours looking on the internet for a solution, I'm lost for ideas as I didn't make any changes?

What happens when I open my Filezilla and try connecting as SFTP is it states:

Error:Connection timed out
Error:Could not connect to server

I checked server log /var/log/secure and it states:

Accepted password for root from UNKNOWN port 49212 ssh2
Apr 9 07:41:41 s15320264 sshd[7122]: fatal: Write failed: Connection reset by peer

Odd part is, it's worked fine for weeks, months without ever failing to connect?

Also, notice that Putty connection seems to take much longer to authenticate root user than it used to?

Checked via Plesk Health Monitoring and all CPU, Memory and Disk Levels are well below any alarm levels.

I have run all Plesk updates to 10.2.0 in the hope that it resolved it, but to no avail.

Debian :: Trying To Change Hostname Through SSH

Apr 15, 2010

I tried to change hostname through ssh.
Old hostname = server1
New hostname = server1.domain.local

I changed the hostname by editing the /etc/hostname file
Old:
/etc/hostname
server1
New:
/etc/hostname
server1.domain.local

Then I executed /etc/init.d/hostname.sh, and get as below, looks OK!
hostname -f
server1.domain.local
hostname
server1.domain.local
hostname -s
server1

The logs are still just showing server1.
Example:
tail -f /var/log/auth.log
Apr 15 13:30:01 server1 CRON[22783]: pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
Apr 15 13:30:02 server1 CRON[22783]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root

Do I really have to reboot, or is this normal behaviour that it does not show the full hostname?

CentOS 5 :: Timezone Change Not Working?

Oct 6, 2010

I was needing to change the timezone on a CentOS 5.1 (but upgraded to 5.3) machine that doesn't have X installed nor did it (initially) have the system-config-date package installed. After some Googling it appeared that all I needed to do was copy over the desirec zoneinfo file to /etc/localtime and edit the /etc/sysconfig/clock file to zone that I choose. I then set the time and used that to set the hardware clockhe original timezone was "America/New_York" (EDT) and was wanting to change it to "US/Central" (CDT). After making the changes, when I do a "date" command it is still reporting the time in EDT. I then installed the system-config-date package and tried using /usr/sbin/timeconfig. I still get the result that the timezone is reported in EDT. The time is technically correct but is an hour ahead since its using EDT to report the time.

CentOS 5 :: Yum Stopped Working - Errors Returned While Uploading " Failed To Open Directory With Write Permission"?

Jul 26, 2009

Its been a while (maybe too long) since I last used yum to check for updates / install anything on my server, but when I tried the other day I got the following response:

# yum list updates
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up repositories
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: updates[code]......

Trying other mirror.Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: updates

A few weeks ago there were some network changes, but nothing else should have changed OS side.I have checked /etc/resolv.conf and that looks ok - ping and wget have no problem resolving hostnames.I tried setting enabled=0 in yhe .repos files - this allowed me to do a 'yum list', but 'yum list updates' returned an empty list - I am definitely not 100% up to date!

P.S. Attachment not there at the moment - getting the following error when I try to upload the zip file...Errors Returned While Uploading

Failed to open directory with write permission: /var/wwwthtml/oldwebcopy.centos.org/uploads/newbb

2 127.0.0.1 pc-194-101.fysik.uu.se roddur

2 HOSTNAME=roddur

What I have to do if I have to change my hostname to "roddur"?
