View 7 RepliesI'm quite new to Linux/CentOS. I installed LAMP from official CentOS repositories and I'm wondering why the PHP (5.1.6) or MySQL (5.0.77) versions are so old. Why there is now the latest versions available.
Is it recommended to use these versions or should I update to the newest one - if so could you plesae provide me some links to official repositories&tutorials.
I'm trying to setup local LAMP installation of CentOS 5.6 in VMware for local developing. I installed Apache, PHP, phpMyAdmin from this tutorial. Is there any other begginers step-by-step tutorial for setting up LAMP? I need help setting up FTP and permissions, hot to setup permissions for /var/www/html directory?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhy does centos-release-notes have any dependancies ?
I can see no reason why centos-relese-notes should depend on centos-release when I try "yum erase centos-release-notes" I am told there are 72 dependancies including completely irrelevant packages such as tar all because of this unnecessary dependancy.
The centos-release-notes package simply contains a bunch of text/html files that nothing else relies upon, so why the dependancies ?
i'm having hard times trying to get rtorrent working on two CentOS boxes (one is 5.2 and the other 5.3, both x86_64)
i'm using rtorrent RPMs provided from rpmforge
they install fine, starts fine ... but there's simply absolutely no traffic at all !!! I'm sure ISPs are not blocking torrent (they can be shapping, but blocking i'm pretty sure they arent). And when i say there's no traffic, i mean rtorrent cant even download the torrent file when i inform the [URL] from inside rtorrent. It stays there on 0% and there's no download.
if i download the file from the console, with wget for example, i can download it successfully.
i have already tcpdumped the machine and i can confirm rtorrent is not even generating any kind of traffic. NOTHING.
do anyone got rtorrent from rpmforge working fine on CentOS 5.2 and 5.3 x86_64 boxes ?
it should be simply .... at least it was on Fedora 8 and 9 that i used before start using CentOS ...
We have CentOS on an HP proliant g5 server and attached to it is an DAS with 3 branches of disks so 5 - 5 - 5 drives. Now what we had so far there is that every branch was on raid 5 and totaling 3 mounted drives each with 4TB (disks are 1Tb each). But a couple days ago something happened while i was replacing older drives with some bad sectors with new one. What I did is to remove old drive, put in new one, initialize and attach to array and rebuild starts. Now somehow 2 drievs ( as i was rebuilding 2 arrays at once) switched place.so disk on 1_1_5 and disk on 1_3_5 switched place. There coul dbe possibility that I made mistake and assigned them to different arrays when initializing but that is really hardly as i replaced one then later another so...
Anyway to the to the point. Is there painless option to remove 1 disk from array and then assign it to other array and then let raid rebuild everything normally?I;ve made backup of everything there so there is no fear of loosing anything...By the way at the same time when that switch happens a partition from 1 raid array completely dis speared and there is only unallocated space on that one right now.
I am a newbie to CentOS and I am trying to build a webserver for development of my website. I installed CentOS 5.5 with server gui and server and knome settings but cant get the LAMP installed right?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently setup a new Linux server running Fedora 10. For some reason all ping response times are rounded to the nearest 10ms. For example, running the simple command "ping yahoo.com" give the following sample results:
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=12 ttl=57 time=60.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=13 ttl=56 time=50.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=14 ttl=56 time=40.0 ms
64 bytes from ir1.fp.vip.re1.yahoo.com (69.147.125.65): icmp_seq=15 ttl=56 time=50.0 ms
I could post a larger result set but its all the same... every response is rounded to a multiple of 10ms. This wouldn't be a big deal except that the server is running Nagios for monitoring so accurate stats are important. The Nagios check_ping and check_icmp commands are also returning rounded off results. How can I get ping to simply respond with the actual response times rather than a rounded off number?
I am looking for the CentOS LAMP system (all in one) that can fit onto a CD or a DVD. When I check the download section there are 6 files of 700MBs or so. How come there are CentOS versions of Asterisk (for example Trixbox) that has LAMP and CentOS 5 and yet fits on one CD?
Is that a stripped down version? if so, can you please guide me to a simple CentOS version on this site so that I can download it and build LAMP on it?

I will have some more details tomorrow morning as to exactly what we're moving and off of and on to what. The Cent OS installation I believe is 5ish. Red Hat could be a wildcard. <-It might be Red Hat, Red Hat Enterprise or Fedora
I have an offline computer with centos5.5 running on it. I want to do some tests on mediawiki or any other opensource tools. However, I can't access localhost from the browser because I don't have a webserver. How do I install apache or LAMP in general without the "yum" command? Where can I find all the dependencies needed?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am completely new to Debian . My aim is to get one of my machines to run this system as the intranet server including www server, mailing server, intranet server and LAMP at the same time on the small network. I have found some resources including how-to's how to install Debian as the normal operative OS not as the intranet server. I have also found this: [url].However that is applicable for the 'Mandrake' distribution (Mandriva). Now, I would like to ask few questions that will be applicable not only for me but for more users and if someone could answer them .
1.What installation source shall I choose, CD/DVD/Network Install CD?
2.I have found this: [url] ... troduction is that applicable?
3.How to install web server, mail server, LAMP and configure them, link above describes mail server installation not configuration itself.
4.How to configure intranet on Debian to work as the server serving the Windows clients (using Samba?)
If someone could propose a set of the sources or the instructions how to achieve all of the steps I would really appreciate that. Also, if sources will be given by the users I shall try to achieve what I want and write up 'how-to' for this problem. Therefore, me and other users would benefit from that.
I have Centos 5.3 on our server When I log-in in webmin I have a message "Warning - Your system is actually running CentOS Linux version 5.3." If I do, is it going to change any configuration on our server?

I've been messing around for a few days now trying to figure out what is going on and I feel like I'm making a stupid mistake. Essentially I'm trying to build a LAMP server (PHP) on my Mac Mini using VMWare Fusion 3 using Linux Server 9.10. To start, it's not going well at all. Once I install the LAMP portion after calling it with root permissions, I have no UI. Personally, I need a UI. Am I not understanding this? I figured once I install the LAMP packages and restart the server, there would be a user interface but nothing...

I'm having trouble updating PCRE library on my web server. Even though pcretest -v show 6.6 it still showing PCRE 8.10 on my working devserver. But our live server shows PCRE 6.6
I'm not sure what I should be updating here. PHP, HTTPD or PCRE ?
I just updated my CentOS 5 installation to 5.2 using yum update command.
But soon after restart, I can't use FTP anymore.
I tried SFTP but it always ended with "out of memory" message.
And last way, I tried to uninstall ftp and replace it with vsftp but still cannot solved.
Now I don't know how to upload my files to this server :(
I have a RPS (server with iscsi storage) that worked fine ! I yum updated it yesterday in order to upgrade it to 5.6.
After upgrading, the server can't reboot at all ! I can't find anything in logs
When i boot it via a kvm, the load screen says :
kernel panic - not syncinc : VFS : Unable to mounr root fs on unknown-block (2,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.34.6-xxxx-std-ipv6-32 #3
My kernel is on a netboot, it is 2.6.32, and i work on an ip failover.
The ipfailover continues to ping, but not the 'true' ip adresse
I assume it is a iscsi bug, but i don't know how to fix it. Or maybe it is something else.

I updated my CentOS 5 box recently. But after then my Apache can no longer work; every time I try to start apache, it says started OK but then dies immediately and no error message at all. When I tried 'apachectl restartI', it says apache not running. It has been running fine before the update. I've looked at /var/log/httpd.log but there is not any message about my problem.
