CentOS 5 :: Yum Update Broke Server (5.5 > 5.6)

May 4, 2011

I have a RPS (server with iscsi storage) that worked fine ! I yum updated it yesterday in order to upgrade it to 5.6.

After upgrading, the server can't reboot at all ! I can't find anything in logs

When i boot it via a kvm, the load screen says :

kernel panic - not syncinc : VFS : Unable to mounr root fs on unknown-block (2,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.34.6-xxxx-std-ipv6-32 #3

My kernel is on a netboot, it is 2.6.32, and i work on an ip failover.

The ipfailover continues to ping, but not the 'true' ip adresse

I assume it is a iscsi bug, but i don't know how to fix it. Or maybe it is something else.

CentOS 5 Server :: Xen Guest Won't Boot After Update / Solution For This?

Dec 21, 2009

I'm experiencing some rather severe problems after updating my Centos 5.4 system (Virtual Xen guest). What happens is that when the system boots it complains about missing .so files which prevents about 50% of the services installed from running.
I'm suspecting that it has something to do with selinux for two reasons: 1. The first services to go down complains about the security context of some files, and 2. selinux was kinda the reason I decided to update in the first place as it was disabled when it shouldn't be (enabled in system-config-securitylevel, disabled when running sestatus).
The whole boot-sequence ends with alot of "INIT: Id 'X' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"-messages (including all runlevels) before it goes stale, and I can do nothing.
The server in question had undergone very little tinkering from my part, pretty much none at all, the only services installed after installation was apache, mysql and webmin.

Details:
CentOS 5.4 is installed on both the host and guest.
The guest runs on an lvm-partition.
I have two other vm's(also CentOS) running just fine, altough I'm a bit weary of updating them .

Attached are some screenshots of the boot-process.

I hope some one here can share some insight on this problem. It's making me pretty nervous seeing that our whole network is run by CentOS-installations (not that I'm certain that CentOS is the culprit).

CentOS 5 Networking :: CVS Server - Login Works But Update Times Out

Jul 6, 2009

I run a CentOS 5.1 using VMServer on XP. From home I can successfully 'cvs login' to my CVS server. But starting 'cvs update', the connection times out.

Netstat shows the connection as established:
# netstat -an | grep 2401
tcp 0 0 192.168.1.35:58651 85.25.xx.xx:2401 ESTABLISHED
CVS server is domain managed with dnsalias service (dyndns.org)

Using the same computer at work (other ISP) I have no problems - cvs update works just fine.
Can I assume that it is not a port/firewall issue, since "cvs login" is successful? Any clues where to start diggin'?

CentOS 5 Server :: HTTPD Won't Restart After Update: Mod_proxy_ajp Fails If Mod_proxy Not Loaded

Apr 29, 2010

I have just been told that httpd was not running on my Centos virtual server. It seems that my hosting company rebooted my server 2 days ago and that httpd restart failed due to:

Starting httpd: httpd:
Syntax error on line 213 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
Syntax error on line 2 of /etc/httpd/conf.d/proxy_ajp.conf:
Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so: undefined symbol: proxy_module

I had worked around and forgotten about this some time ago. The problem arose because the most recent httpd update installed proxy_ajp.conf into /etc/httpd/conf.d which was then loaded on restart The trouble is I do not use mod_proxy (I think just to try and get a lean and mean web server) and proxy_ajp.conf does not check if mod_proxy is loaded before it tries to LoadModule proxy_ajp_module modules/mod_proxy_ajp.so

Hence httpd fails to restart. RedHats's bug tracker lists this as an old issue (which was never resolved) [URL] My workaround was to rename proxy_ajp.conf to proxy_ajp.conf.orig so that httpd would start up correctly. However any updates simply reinstall proxy_ajp.conf and so IMO the problem needs to be resolved at source. how to ensure that httpd updates do not bite me in the future? Do I really have to run mod_proxy whether or not I need it?
