CentOS 5 :: Save On MS Licenses Using QuickBooks?

Jul 4, 2011

We need to provide multiple people from outside access to QuickBooks. Each and everyone user from outside should be able to connect (remotly) to their own sandbox (maybe) or virtual screen and be able to use Quickbooks to update their own books.

I was wondering if there is any way to use Xen or some sort of Virtualization to achive this using CentOS virtualization? I want to save on MS Windows license if possible.

If not, then what do you suggest I should do with Windows + CentOS to get this running? Should I install multiple instances of Windows onto CentOS and give access to users?

Fedora :: Wine - Quickbooks And Dumb?

Aug 5, 2009

Short storey is my gf's father (as in priest) pc is infected and his webmail account was hacked so he's now sensitive and understands the significance of a scammer running wild with his name. Oh he's running win98.

I've picked up a cheep off-lease dell (P4, 3GHz) and am tossing over the OS. Has anyone tried Quickbooks on wine? Good luck, successfull? No I don't own it, the perish does, and I can't run away with it so flailing out of site isn't an option. Yes I really want to setup a linux box here before settling for Windows so any thoughts or suggestions short of training him to use gnu cash

Ubuntu Servers :: Quickbooks Server For 6 Users?

Mar 18, 2010

I need to setup a simple server to make available Quickbooks accounting data to just a few stations. Can this be done with Ubuntu desktop version? Would it be recommended due to the small number of users? Or should I use a server platform?I have never used Linux before but have used command line interfaces and am looking forward to it. I installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 32 bit and have even gone as far as logging in. Amazing I know. I installed it on a separate disk so I can switch between Windows and Linux startup disks at boot via cmos.as a first step into linux would like to be able to browse the web from Ubuntu Server 9.10 if the Server edition is in fact the route I should be taking.I would also like a good source to learn not only command line commands but also all the stuff that I see after the commands, you know, all the stuff with - signs all over the place.

General :: Difference Between Copyright And Licenses?

May 20, 2011

I think that here was a misunderstanding between the copyright and the license. In short, only my opinion ( I am not a lawyer), it is not illegal to post links to copyrighted material (as long as the license allows it). If it would be, I had to remove the links in my sig to Slackware, XFCE and zsh. All that software is copyrighted. I can post links to that because the license allows me to spread that software. Even GPL licensed software is copyrighted. But I think that as long as the license is not clear, links to copyrighted software should not be posted at LQ.

General :: Android Apache And GPL 2 Licenses Compatibility

Mar 3, 2011

If Apache license 1 and 1.1 are not compatible with GPL v2 and GPL v3 and the only compatibility is Apache License v2 with GPL v3 how can android kernel be GPL v2 and userspace programs be Apache License 2? More specifically GPL v2 requires all derived works and programs to have the same license as it has, therefore Apache shouldn't be allowed inside android. I've read on a website something like "Google created one middle layer between Linux kernel, without violating GPL. And 3rd party can't see the source code of hardware driver and app" and then "So in oder to get more vendor support, Google specifically modified Linux Kernel, transfer those features which should belong to Kernel, to its userspace source." The above seems vague explanation, even if you put a middle layer this middle layer becomes GPL and anything above as well.

Ubuntu :: Windows Licenses - Wipe The Disk, Install Lucid, And Run Windows In Virtualbox?

Sep 28, 2010

Background: I'm a 20+ year Mac user, switched four years ago to Linux.I have NO experience with Windows to speak of. Whenever I've gotten a new box, it's either been home-built or a Mac.Now I have a new Acer Aspire AS7551 laptop, and although I have not yet booted into Windows, it comes with a Windows 7 Home Premium license. I've been running it with Ubuntu 10.04 off a flash drive and everything works perfectly.

What I want to do: I want to wipe the disk, install Lucid, and run Windows in Virtualbox (for the sole purpose of watching some Netflix and learning a little bit about Windows 7). For the purpose of this question, please accept that I DO NOT want to dual boot. The problem: From what I can find, I can't use the "recovery discs" that came with my laptop to create a virtual machine. This is confusing, because it seems like I paid for a legitimate Windows license for use with this laptop.

Questions:

1. Would MS exchange my recovery discs for a regular install disc to go with my license code if I explained this to them?

2. If not, is there a source for Windows ISOs that I can safely use with my license? (I am aware that the legitimacy of that approach is questionable, but I am quite comfortable with the ethics since I paid for Windows 7, own the license, and only want to use it on the same computer.

3.If not,is there any way in heck I can use my recovery disc to create something Virtualbox can work with?

4. If not, how are all of you people getting your Windows virtual machines going??

(I have read that Acer is a major hassle to get a refund from for the "Windows tax" so I might as well be able to use it--this is MS' chance to win over a fan if only they will let me!)

Red Hat :: CentOS Kickstart Does Not Save Screenshots?

Jun 24, 2010

I created a kickstart file and put it on a floppy. I have installed several times to refine the process and confused. I am not sure if the kickstart file is even being used by grub. I specified

autostep --autoscreenshot The install STILL asks me all those questions I was trying to avoid by doing autostep in the first place, and /root/anaconda-screenshots coes not exist.

I specified
linux = hd:fd0:/ks.cfg

as a Grub command line option. I got that line off a forum, so it may be inaccurate. Anyone know if that is correctd? If I screw that up, shouldn't anaconda complain about file-not-found? Are the screenshots only applicable to graphics mode or also to text mode? (I have been using text mode, assuming text file screen dumps would appear in that subdirectory...)

CentOS 5 :: Make VLC Save Brightness Setting?

Apr 25, 2009

Totem didn't play .avi movies by default after my new CentOS 5.3 install. In my effort to find a way to fix it I learned in another forum that installing VLC allows almost all video formats to be played. So I added RPMForge to my repository group then I found and installed VLC with no problem.

Now that VLC is installed and I've had a chance to use it, I've learned that it fails to save my brightness setting between launches. This is very frustrating because the default brightness is always too dark, which means I have to go to the controls and reset it every time I launch the software. Does anyone here know how I can save my brightness setting between launches?

CentOS 5 :: Stop Screen Blanking And Power Save?

Aug 25, 2009

I'm not sure this belongs in this forum as opposed to the hardware forum, but I do not beleive this is a hardware issue.I want to stop the scrren from blanking and going to power save. I'm running 5.3_x86-64 and I'm using the nVidia drivers direct from nVidia called NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.13-pkg2.run.

So far, I'm added DPMS off in /etc/xorg.conf, removed all the screensaver packages and all the power management packagesbut the screen is still going blank after a time of inactivity. What else do I need to do? I can not allow the screen to go blank, there should be no screensaver or power management and the machine should stay in a completely awake and ready-to-use state at all times.

General :: Limitations Of GNU General Public Licenses?

Mar 23, 2010

I have the impression that not that many people understand the scope and limitations of GNU General Public License. This is somehow my basic understanding of it. If I take a program covered under the GNU license, first of all I have the right to get the source code. Second, I can modify it at will. Third, I can redistribute it as will too but the new code will necessarily will have the same GNU license. This made me wonder how people actually can charge for software derived from Linux, for instance, Red Hat. Well, my impression is that they really make profit only out of services. In this thread [URL] I think I found a lot of confusion, even from a moderator (not intended to offend). Red Hat is based on Linux and it is necessarily covered under GNU. Somebody probably bought the program from RHE and can make it available at no cost.

Nevertheless, the moderator decided to warn the user. In this article [URL] it says the following:"Our training is not designed to promote vendor lock-in. Though these courses are based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the source code for [RHEL] is available to the community via the GPL [GNU General Public License]," said Red Hat spokewoman Leigh Day. This thread [URL] shows yet more confused people. Is there is a glitch in this type of license that prevents programs like RHEL to be redistributed for free? Why their license page doesn't mention GNU license? Or the problem is just that people get overwhelmed by this license and are afraid to be penalized and get paralyzed? By the way, RHEL is just the example. The key question is about the license!!

Ubuntu :: Xrandr Doesn't Save Changes - How To Make It To Save Changes

Jun 16, 2010

my mediacenter is attached to an beamer with the optimal resolution of 1280*720 ubuntu 10.04 doesnt offer me this revolution (on my intel 915 graphis controller). this means i have to add this resolution to the possible resolutions. first i used cvt

Code:

cvt 1280 720 60

and got this result:

Quote:

# 1280x720 59.86 Hz (CVT 0.92M9) hsync: 44.77 kHz; pclk: 74.50 MHz
Modeline "1280x720_60.00" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync

then i added this to xrandr

Code:

xrandr --verbose --newmode "1280x720" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync

and

Code:

xrandr --verbose --addmode VGA1 1280x720

now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Kernel-xen 64bit And Ati ES1000 - Monitor Goes Blank And Says "no Video - Going To Power Save"

Nov 21, 2010

I have problem with onboard ATI ES1000. Server details:

Supermicro X7SBI, Q6600, 8G ram. Centos 5.5 minimal installation, without X.

Problem is that with all kernel-xen x86_64 from current kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.x86_64 back to kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.el5.x86_64 after kernel boots monitor goes blank and says "no video, going to power save".

Google finds similar problems and sugestions was to add "nomodeset". With this option monitor also blanks after kernel boot, but says "out of range". Other options to modify xorg.conf does not apply, becouse there is no X installed.

I try with multiple monitors, without success. This happens only with 64bit kernel-xen. All other 32 and 64 bit kernels and 32bit kernel-xen works fine, video is ok. This happens to 6 servers, all are same hardware, used as cluster. Installation with "linix text" allways is fine, video disappears after first reboot when standart kernel is booted. I also tryed with almost all possible "vga=xxxx" kernel options and none of them works.

What else to try?

General :: Save Iptables When Iptables-save Doesn't Exist?

Apr 14, 2011

I'm working on a Soekris net4801 that is running an unknown distro of Linux. The kernel is 2.4.29, and iptables is v1.3.4.

I can't work out how to save the iptables. I searched the whole system for files/folders containing the name "iptables" and got 3 results:

/user/local/lib/iptables
/sbin/iptables
/lib/iptables

I've tried iptables save, iptables-save and iptables save active.

"iptables save" and "iptables save active" give me an invalid argument error. "iptables-save" isn't a valid command. "iptables --help" gives me a list of valid switches, none of which have to do with saving.

how I can save the iptables?
