CentOS 5 Hardware :: CentOS Doesn't Save Video Refresh Infos
Dec 9, 2009
My CentOS installation correctly recognize my video card and my monitor if I go to System->Preferences->Screen Resolution and set monitor refresh rate to 75 hz, everything works fine, but if I reboot, at startup refresh return to 60 hz.How can I save refresh rate value?
Problem is that with all kernel-xen x86_64 from current kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.x86_64 back to kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.el5.x86_64 after kernel boots monitor goes blank and says "no video, going to power save".
Google finds similar problems and sugestions was to add "nomodeset". With this option monitor also blanks after kernel boot, but says "out of range". Other options to modify xorg.conf does not apply, becouse there is no X installed.
I try with multiple monitors, without success. This happens only with 64bit kernel-xen. All other 32 and 64 bit kernels and 32bit kernel-xen works fine, video is ok. This happens to 6 servers, all are same hardware, used as cluster. Installation with "linix text" allways is fine, video disappears after first reboot when standart kernel is booted. I also tryed with almost all possible "vga=xxxx" kernel options and none of them works.
One of the first issues I struggled with after installing CentOS 5 was that my screen would not come back to me after closing my laptop lid. Note that this is in a command line interface (not GNOME). After unsuccessful searching on the web I stumbled upon this configuration file (/etc/acpi/events/video.conf):
# Configuration to turn on DPMS again on video activity, needed for some # laptops. Disabled by default, uncomment if your laptop display stays blank # after you close and open the lid.
This will be a little long (having read Phil's 'how to ask questions' FAQ). I'm trying to get OpenVPN working between my CentOS server and some Windoze laptops running XP. There seems to be plenty of sample config files available, but to date, none of them have worked for me. Pulling out my trusty Wireshark, I've found some clues,
BACKGROUND: My local subnet (NAT'ed by my gateway router) is 192.168.52.x. My router has been configured with a conduit (port-forward) for port 1194 (the standard OpenVPN port), which points towards my CentOS server. The CentOS server is .52.112, and the supplicant is .52.110. I have tried the lient both inside and outside my local subnet, with no difference in events or outcomes.
I recently switched my desktop from Fedora to CentOS. On Fedora it auto detects my refresh rate at 85 Hz. On CentOS by default it only allowed 60 Hz. I looked at the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and the display settings were:
I created a kickstart file and put it on a floppy. I have installed several times to refine the process and confused. I am not sure if the kickstart file is even being used by grub. I specified
autostep --autoscreenshot The install STILL asks me all those questions I was trying to avoid by doing autostep in the first place, and /root/anaconda-screenshots coes not exist.
I specified linux = hd:fd0:/ks.cfg
as a Grub command line option. I got that line off a forum, so it may be inaccurate. Anyone know if that is correctd? If I screw that up, shouldn't anaconda complain about file-not-found? Are the screenshots only applicable to graphics mode or also to text mode? (I have been using text mode, assuming text file screen dumps would appear in that subdirectory...)
We need to provide multiple people from outside access to QuickBooks. Each and everyone user from outside should be able to connect (remotly) to their own sandbox (maybe) or virtual screen and be able to use Quickbooks to update their own books.
I was wondering if there is any way to use Xen or some sort of Virtualization to achive this using CentOS virtualization? I want to save on MS Windows license if possible.
If not, then what do you suggest I should do with Windows + CentOS to get this running? Should I install multiple instances of Windows onto CentOS and give access to users?
Totem didn't play .avi movies by default after my new CentOS 5.3 install. In my effort to find a way to fix it I learned in another forum that installing VLC allows almost all video formats to be played. So I added RPMForge to my repository group then I found and installed VLC with no problem.
Now that VLC is installed and I've had a chance to use it, I've learned that it fails to save my brightness setting between launches. This is very frustrating because the default brightness is always too dark, which means I have to go to the controls and reset it every time I launch the software. Does anyone here know how I can save my brightness setting between launches?
is there any way that i can save the default keyring password? each time i logon, it asks for the passwd and once i provide it, everything is all right. But it's kinda annoying.
i have problems with my failover machines and cant locate the cause. The last update is quite some time ago.So will it hurt my configuration when I do an yum-update? I have 5 Xen VM on each machine, also they replicate with drbd and heartbeat. Can I just update the dom0 and leave the VM untouched inside?
I'm not sure this belongs in this forum as opposed to the hardware forum, but I do not beleive this is a hardware issue.I want to stop the scrren from blanking and going to power save. I'm running 5.3_x86-64 and I'm using the nVidia drivers direct from nVidia called NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.13-pkg2.run.
So far, I'm added DPMS off in /etc/xorg.conf, removed all the screensaver packages and all the power management packagesbut the screen is still going blank after a time of inactivity. What else do I need to do? I can not allow the screen to go blank, there should be no screensaver or power management and the machine should stay in a completely awake and ready-to-use state at all times.
my mediacenter is attached to an beamer with the optimal resolution of 1280*720 ubuntu 10.04 doesnt offer me this revolution (on my intel 915 graphis controller). this means i have to add this resolution to the possible resolutions. first i used cvt
now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....
im following a tutorial to setup a dns server, after editing vi etc/sysconfig/syslog, i cant seem to save me changes or exit the screen to get back to a command prompt. have tried to google the answer to no avail, any ideas? also im using putty to ssh, is the answer the same as using the terminal directly?
I have postfix setup right now and it's relying mail to our Exchange server fine. What i would like to do though is have postfix save the email that gets passed through so that if a manager deletes an email, it's easy to look through by date and find the email he's looking for. Well, I'm thinking it would be a lot easier then having to need to pull out the backup tape and try to recover one email. Does anyone know whether I would be able to accomplish this?
When I run yum list installed command the output shows two kernels:
[Code].....
Would it therefore be safe to remove the first kernel in the installed list to save having two kernels being updated everytime I run yum update? Or is the PAE kernel dependant upon the original?
I looked for a solution to this, and found a thread for it ,but I dont know how to do what it says. Here is part of it by the user "cameronol": There is a bug in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic with the default /etc/X11/xorg.conf involving Nvidia. receive the error"Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'.Then he posts:
[Code]...
Then he says to delete the first section with the default screen, and it will be fixed. But HOW do I look for the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to edit it,and how do I edit it?I am new to ubuntu, but I have learned to use a terminal(I think)It seems to be just like the "run" box on Windows.I did a search for the file, but came up empty.I want to fix this cause every time I restart,I have a low resolution that is impossible to work in.
Problems with xen 3.1.2 creating and installing domU CentOS 5.5 I am trying to do a virt-install --prompt --paravirt, and the install error out while trying to download install RPMs. I have googled for xen centos virt-install and various permutations. I have found similar howtos for 5.4 and 5.3, but they resulted in the same outcome. I did find several posts with similar issues, but no solution was posted.[URL]..
I am in the process of building a new server on an Asus P5QPL-AM motherboard and an Intel E8600 processor.explain to me the difference between the two versions and what would you recommend. Also, is there any advantage of SATA over IDE hard drives?
Recently I began to use VLC to watch videos but I can't find a very important feature: remember the position where the movie has been stopped and the program has been closed. Does anyone know if there is setting, a modification or a trick to do this? I have seen that there are the bookmarks but this doesn't works because when you close the program all the bookmarks are erased.

I was able to add other repos and install applications and upgrades (new install Gnome 11.4 64 bit on friends laptop), and Packman and Video lan are the only repos I can't refresh, any ideas?
I had many trouble with my system the past two months. I thought i finally had it running flawless as i encountered another major issue: My Screen doesn't refresh properly (using GNOME). I have blank windows or windows showing old content which only gets updated when i minimize the window or move the mouse over them. And even then only small parts get really refreshed. Every Applicatio
If I open Firefox, the title bar shows "Ubuntu Start Page - Mozilla Firefox". Then I type in the website I want [URL], the title bar still shows the same thing instead of [URL] .." If I minimize firefox window and open it again, then it's normal. If I then type in another website [URL], the title bar is still [URL]
I need to monitorize which Wi-Fi APs are in coverage, so periodically I perform a scan whith "sudo iwlist ath0 scan". The problem appears when disconnecting an AP (from the electrical network). In this case, iwconfig shows the disconnected AP during 30-40 seconds after the disconnection.
I'm trying to figure out how to order the kernel to actually refresh the list of in coverage APs, and avoid to show nets that were in coverage but aren't now.
Since upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files. When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.
Here's my environment;
Dell Latitude D620 nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (according to hwinfo) Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit (upgraded from Jaunty) 2 GB RAM
I've got the recommended "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" hardware driver and the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet, which says my NVIDIA driver version is 195.36.24. I'm running dual screens (1440x900 and 1280x1024) using TwinView. After a flicker, here is what I find in the Xorg.0.log;
Code:
(II) Jun 30 12:17:42 NVIDIA(0): Setting mode (II) Jun 30 12:17:42 NVIDIA(0): "CRT:nvidia-auto-select+1440+0,DFP:nvidia-auto-select+0+124" (II) Jun 30 12:17:43 NVIDIA(0): Setting mode
Is there something that blocks cron from running a shutdown command? I'm doing a daily bounce to break an attack (I have thread about that in security forum), but I always end up doing it manually. The cron log shows it being fired off at the right time...but the server never bounces. I thought maybe I just missed it, but there is nothing in messages that shows the server restarting (unlike when i do it manually, you see the start-up logging).
This morning, I ran yum update and discovered it was an upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4. Nice, but.... The upgrade went well, no errors, did a reboot to reset everything and now no video output. Good thing I did full system disk backup prior to the upgrade. I am wondering if anyone else has this problem?
I will attempt to boot from a CD/DVD but just thought I would check here first.
