Ubuntu :: Nautilus Requires Root Permission Even Without Gksudo, sudo, etc

Aug 15, 2010

Every time I try to open Nautilus it requires root permission even if I don't use commands like gksudo.

I launch it from docky's bookmarks applet, requires root.

Use a command like "nautilus /home/harvey" it still requires root.

Adding the file browser launcher to docky doesn't even LAUNCH nautilus.

But launching file browser from gnome-panel works O_O.

But I never use gnome-panel, so I'd like to be able to launch it from docky and commands and stuff without root permission.

Ubuntu :: Shortcut To Access Sudo Nautilus (gksudo Nautilus) From The Current Window

Feb 11, 2011

Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

How can I get it to give me back my background? Edit: Fixed the desktop (--no-desktop option on nautilus command) - need to find how to kill the nautilus process automatically when I close it.

Ubuntu :: Get Errors Even When Running Nautilus Under Gksudo?

Sep 12, 2010

On Linux Mint, there is this theme called WildMint, looks somewhat like an older Ubuntu Studio theme. Anyway, I have been trying to find how to get it to work on Ubuntu instead of Mint. It is nowhere to be found on Gnome-Look and I've tried to search everywhere for it. Also, I've tried just copying the folder from /usr/share/themes but I just get errors even when running Nautilus under gksudo.

Ubuntu Installation :: Ureadahead Requires /var On Root Filesystem

Is it sensible to remove "ureadahead" until this is fixed or is there no harm done? As a normal user ... (yes still I have /var in a separate partition, because I want to be on the safe side with my databases located in /var when reinstalling or upgrading the system ... - by the way: does this make sense or is it better to just have /home separate and use a backup of /var folders?) ... as a normal user I feel a bit lost with bugs like this. It would be nice to get some information somewhere. Something like:

"Don't worry, just wait for an update with a bugfix!"
or
"To avoid further problems just remove 'ureadahead' until it's fixed!"

Ubuntu Security :: Giving Root Permission To An Application But Without Running It As Root?

Jan 20, 2011

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out). Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.

OpenSUSE Install :: Shutting Down Requires Root Password?

Apr 29, 2010

'm running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 4.4.2.

Since i installed KDE 4.* Whenever I go to shutdown, I get the shutdown dialogue, I hit shutdown, it logs me off, shows some text on shutdown screen, and then opens up the GUI again, bringing up a small window, where It asks for the root password, in order to shutdown. If i don't give it the root password, it goes to the login screen.

I cannot, any way, command line, GUI, or anything, shutdown without providing a root password.

If I use the command shutdown now, as root, it logs me off and goes through an endless cycle of logging off, and then asking for root to shut down, and not shutting down (All on the CLI), and everytime i give it the password, it cancels shutdown and goes back to the prompt. I eventually have to pull the battery to kill it in that case..

I have tried chmoding the shutdown scripts to make it work, it doesn't.

Ubuntu Security :: Sudo Permission Not Being Revoked?

Apr 1, 2011

I am using Ubuntu 10.04-alternate-amd64 for full disk encryption. After getting my updates which i get as soon as they are released. I am getting the issue temp root (sudo) password is not being revoked. After using any app that requires the use of sudo the permission for it does not get removed like it normally does.

I have tried logging out then back in, which usually removes the permission, this no longer works, also tried waiting and even after 1 hour permission still there. The only work around I have found is to use the terminal to execute the required programs then after closing terminal the temp permission is now removed like it should be. This issue has effected all of my systems and a friend of mine as well, (friend uses same distro).

To replicate issue:

1) Boot system.
2) Login.
3) Check for updates or any other app that uses root permission.
4) Logout
5) Login
6) Repeat step 3
7) App will not ask for permission it will use root permission automatically.
