I get the following error on 'yum update'. I have tried 'yum clean all' and also:

After adding rpmforge on a fresh installation of CentOS 5.4 64bit, I received the error "Metadata file does not match checksum" so decided to try the fix yum -y remove yum-fastestmirror, As discussed at [URL]... Unfortunately, this also deinstalled yum. If I try to reinstall from my CentOS 5.4 DVD, I get:
# rpm -i --aid yum-3.2.22-20.el5.centos.noarch.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
yum-fastestmirror is needed by yum-3.2.22-20.el5.centos.noarch
But if I try to install the yum-fastestmirror I get
# rpm -i --aid yum-fastestmirror-1.1.16-13.el5.centos.noarch.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
yum >= 3.0 is needed by yum-fastestmirror-1.1.16-13.el5.centos.noarch
Which is a bit circular.
I have 2 hard drives on mu box 1st one is 500.0 MB ext4 Volume where I have my syste FC 13 and a 2nd one where I put my database files as follows 78.1 GB ext4 Volume usage = filesystem, format ext4
ih file browser, I can see an icon for a 80GB hard drive but whenever I double click I get the following

I use wireshark (ethereal) to moniter the traffic passing through the NIC. I find that system always sends "bad checksum" TCP/UDP packets. In CentOS 5.2 this is seldom. Does your system (5.3) send "bad checksum" TCP/UDP packet ?

I have a problem. When I start Yast, and it tries to download the update repository, there is a checksum error. The problem is, that this error is always there, it occured about 2 weeks ago and never disappeared. When I change the update repository to a specific one, I chose a german one, there is still that checksum error. If I say yast I want to still use the repository with the error, there comes another checksum error, if i say i dont care about that one either, it says

I am attempting to do a new install of OpenSUSE 11.2 x86-64 by burning a network install disk. I am having trouble getting it to work on my hardware however. Whenever I boot up with the disc, I get a "image checksum error." I have tried to redownload the image and also reburn it. The disc will boot in VirtualBox but will not boot on the machine. I do not understand what could be causing this because the CD drive in the machine is working just fine.

Large packages never works (wesnoth-1.8-music 138MB). I checked many mirrors: main, every from Poland and most from Germany. It same on kubuntu 10.10 and 11.04. My ISP doesn't use proxy of any kind. What could be the reason?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded the opensuse 11.4 64 bit iso both as a direct download and as a torrent, and the md5sums for both iso images are fine.
I tried burning both, and for both of them they fail the checksum installation media test for the actual dvd.
(dvd title openSUSE-DVD-x86_640024)
I burnt them on a 32 bit Pentium 4 machine running suse 11.3, and am trying to install on an Athlon 64 3000+.
This may well be a stupid question, but do you have to burn a 64 bit iso image on a 64 bit machine, or should I be able to burn it on a P4 ok?
I should add that I had tried installing one the dvd's first, and got a lot of failed packages and ended up aborting the install.
I am trying to install Unbuntu 11.04 on a Via raid 0. I have windows already setup and it boots fine, but Ubuntu does not see the raid set. Running dmraid -ay (or any valid switch with dmraid) returns :
sudo dmraid -ay -v
ERROR: via: invalid checksum on /dev/sdb
ERROR: via: invalid checksum on /dev/sda
no raid disks
mainboard is Asus M2V, with 2x Hitachi 250Gb disks in raid 0 configuration set in BIOS. I have a 3rd hard disk on the onboard Marvell 88SE6121 sata controller but this is not seen at all by Ubuntu either. I was thinking of installing it here if Ubuntu does not work the RAID, but no go it would seem. I do remember installing an earlier version of ubuntu on this very same board using RAID 0 (2x 80Gb drives at that time) and the RAID was reconised and worked fine straight from live cd to full install.
I have several CentOS 5.5 machines running on my network; yum works just fine for them. I used the 5.5 cds to install them. I decided to grab the DVD of 5.6 and build a new machine. Can't run yum.

I went to remove FreeNX from my Ubuntu Lucid machine so I opened the terminal and typed: "sudo aptitude purge freenx" The command worked but when I used the command "locate nx" I got a list of FreeNX associated files (as well as nxserver files). Is it possible to completely remove a program from my system? I thought "sudo aptitude purge" would do it but apparently not. My only concern is that in the future if I decide to install something related to this program it will interfere and cause problems.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Radeon HD 5830 card and it just doesn't seem to be working to it's full potential. I've tried TF2 and SC2 through the latest stable release of Wine, but the frame rates are horrible.
Also, when I run fgl_glxgears, I only get 800fps. (If I reboot the computer and run fgl_glxgears as soon as I log in, I get at least 3000fps for a few seconds. Then it's back to 800)
I've tried reinstalling the driver several times.
Why is the performance so low?

Can someone tell me the best way to go about peforming an offline defrag of ext4? Considerations:Needs to be safe (i.e.: not wanting to bork up my music files 8))I have seen ref. to e4defrag. Everything seems to point to it still being buggy.I have a large ext4 drive with 2/3 empty that gets lots add / remove.would like ti be able to see the amount of fragmentation.would like to make file continous and then condensed to start of partition ( that would make read times faster right?)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a script that moves files from one directory to another, based on the numeric date of the file name (i.e., 20091212 would go to the December directory). Now, since this script will be ran at the beginning of the following month (December's files to be tarred and gzipped will be performed the first day of January, and January's in February, etc.), it appears to me that the script will be tricky when it comes time to do the December files in January.
Here's part of the script:

I can't seem to figure out a way to carry the output of the date command to the next command, and the year for the December files will always be wrong.
During the upgrade process, all the files appeared to install correctly and the computer rebooted as expected. It then showed the openSUSE splash screen but eventually that went dark and there was no display. Rebooting again did not help. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 results in a corrupted display. I'm guessing this is an issue with the video driver? Not sure how to troubleshoot when I can't even get a terminal window open!

System works fine for some time and allows user to perform many drag drops successfully. I'm running Karmic on an Acer Aspire AO751h and very aware of the issues regarding the GMA500 ans psb drivers, and after reading all the forums I've finally accomplished to make it work just fine. Last week it performed an update via the update manager and since then I haven't been able to restore/run any of the compiz settings and found out that the problem is that it doesn't let me turn on my visual effects under the appearance settings. When I attempt to set them as normal or extra, it starts "searching for available drivers" then the screen blinks several times, goes black, hides every window and just shows me my desktop background and then come back again and displays "Desktop effects could not be enabled". As I mentioned before, Compiz was running fine and I had no issues with the visual effects prior to the last update perfomed a week ago. Can you help me please?? If you need further information I'll be more than glad to provide them tou you, this is driving me nuts!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed Wine on my Fedora 14 and got Security alert.SELinux has prevented wine from performing an unsafe memory operation.SELinux denied an operation requested by wine-preloader, a program used to run Windows applications under Linux. This program is known to use an unsafe operation on system memory but so are a number of malware/exploit programs which masquerade as wine. If you were attempting to run a Windows program your only choices are to allow this operation and reduce your system security against such malware or to refrain from running Windows applications under Linux. If you were not attempting to run a Windows application this indicates you are likely being attacked by some for of malware or program trying to exploit your system for nefarious purposes. My concern is if i hide this attempt, it will not stop wine to from trying to do it, only hide security alerts. This alert is occurred already nearly 5000 times in last 30 min and counting. Wine server is using 10% CPU on this, so only to hide alerts is not a solution, isn't it?

Now my question is even in kernel mode we do not have some mechanism by which we can get access to pointer of these structures.We have some macro.
If I want to manipulate structure on my on way, or performing some more operation defined by me.For example after the crash of Hard Disk Drive, having ext2/3 file system, If i want to know all the inode pointers, and block details.
Can I have some way out to do desired operation ??

I use webmin and putty to administer the system. I have two 1.4 TB drives for storage and one 500 GB drive with 18 GB mounted for root.I performed a large cut & paste operation (25.8 GB of files) using the File Manager in Webmin to move a certain folder into another folder within /media/Work. The operation failed and I am now getting a "root filesystem full" error, and am stumped.

View 9 Replies View RelatedUsing Ubuntu 10.04 on an old HP DV4000 laptop. Trying to do a backup from my laptop's disk to an external USB drive using DD while booted from an Ubuntu boot disk. The laptop's hard drive is not mounted. I was also using a checksum to verify the backup against the hard drive like so:

$ dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/usbdrive/whatever.img
$ md5sum /dev/sda > laptop.md5
$ md5sum /media/usbdrive/whatever.img > img.md5
Unfortunately over two separate attempts I have not got the checksums to match. However, I have mounted the dd image and retrieved part of the backup from the image, with no apparent corruption. Are there any reasons other than data corruption that could be causing this? I have not tried to restore from said image to see if it "works" (for obvious reasons).
How can I checksum a directory?
Using both cksum and md5sum yields the same error
