I want to automate my tasks of administrator using shell scripts like changing owner of a file which usually only the super user which requires password can change i want to do this thing using shell script how to do?
View 4 RepliesAfter upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 all of a sudden, the task manager or task bar, keeps changing length. The individual window "buttons" themselves keep changing size - flashing even, and the space between them also changes. It is driving me nuts! The little system tray(?) icons no longer appear in the system tray, but all stacked on top of each other in the top left corner.

root# find /data/abc -nouser
listing those files.
How to delete those files because
root# find /data/abc -nouser -exec rm -rf {} ;
showing error access is denied.
I can't remove a file where I am owner of :

I can import projects to my cvs repository only when the repository set to group owner cvs. Which is fine to me.
But I found the project folder/files that I imported into the repository have group name other than cvs (in fact, that's my username). And that prevents others to check out my code.
I'm interested in viewing the owners of files on a Windows Server 2003 share (mounted on a Linux computer). These "owners" would be users in Active Directory. If it's not possible to see the username, I wonder if it will at least show a unique identifier. Currently it says all files are owned by root with an "ls -l".

(On a completely unrelated note, Firefox now thinks Im British and wants to change color to colour....weird.)
I want to change my default shell to tcsh. I used

But if I open a new shell, it is still a bash shell.
How do I make my default shell as tcsh?
I did an upgrade install. So, I didn't get the prompt to make one. How to change the admin password? I think I know how I can change my username and password.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 9.10 with VMware Workstation 6.5.0. The install went fine and I ran the updates and everything was working great. Then I decided to change the resolution to something a little larger that was actually workable and after a restart my taskbars were all messed up. I deleted that machine and then opened up the backup. I changed the resolution again and after a restart, same result. I've tried it with multiple resolutions with different aspect ratios all with the same results. I've included a link below with a screen shot of the desktop so you can see what it's doing. Now, it's not unusable but distracting to me nonetheless.

I use webmin and putty to administer the system. I have two 1.4 TB drives for storage and one 500 GB drive with 18 GB mounted for root.I performed a large cut & paste operation (25.8 GB of files) using the File Manager in Webmin to move a certain folder into another folder within /media/Work. The operation failed and I am now getting a "root filesystem full" error, and am stumped.

However, If I try to run System->Administration->Users/Groups, when it asks for root password, it is rejected. When I run updater, it reports failure to authenticate, but doesn't even ask for root password beforehand. Is there a cached password someplace?

Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI like the "Ubuntu" sudo philosophy and wanted to setup this sudo the same way on my Debian system. I was happy when I found that I just have to do the following:
-create a group 'admin'
-adduser christian admin
-visudo
-add the line: %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL
Then I tried sudo rm -rf / to check if sudo works. All worked fine. No, seriously, I can move around files that belong to the root and such, so sudo somehow works. But when creating new files with sudo, like e.g.
tar xzf myZippedTarball
these files belong to user 41034 and to the group users instead of root root:
drwxr-xr-x 7 41034 users 4096 2009-11-01 01:07 libsvm-2.9
Certainly, this is not the way I want to have. The user 41034 doesn't even show up in /etc/passwd...
I'm trying to download a file and extract it in one line, but the extracted file is owned by me instead of root even though I'm using sudo:

If I don't try to extract the file, it is owned by root as I expected:

I used to use the root account for everything for more than a year then I moved to a user account for security reasons but almost all files had root as owner so I could not go 5 minutes without having to change to root and then change the owner of a file to my username to make it usable. I got fed up with this so I just changed the owner of every file on the system to my username instead of root.

Everything was fine until I restarted and the login screen became non functional and I got 2 error messages related to xsession and gnome errors. I think this is because the login screen might have its own user account and it cant access the files for the login process because it is owned by myusername. So my question is what is the user-name of the login account and what folders/files need to have their owner changed so the login process can work? I'm on 10.04 lucid.
I have a script that moves files from one directory to another, based on the numeric date of the file name (i.e., 20091212 would go to the December directory). Now, since this script will be ran at the beginning of the following month (December's files to be tarred and gzipped will be performed the first day of January, and January's in February, etc.), it appears to me that the script will be tricky when it comes time to do the December files in January.

I can't seem to figure out a way to carry the output of the date command to the next command, and the year for the December files will always be wrong.
