Ubuntu :: Duplicating Folder Structure And Copying Files

Nov 21, 2010

I'm looking for some way to search a given directory, copy its folder structure to another given directory, and copy from the original only certain files into the newly created directory.Vague, I'm sure. But here's what I'm actually looking for:My music player won't display album art without a "cover.jpg" image in each folder where the files are, but I have Rhythmbox set to only copy the top rated songs. Each file does have its cover embedded in it, but there's also a cover.jpg in each folder.

So I'd like to let Rhythmbox handle the actual song copying, and then have a script or something that I can run that will scan my onboard music directory for cover.jpg files and then place them in the appropriate folders within my music player's folders. Obviously I can't just copy my onboard music directory, or I'm getting *every* song, not just the top-rated, which defeats the purpose of syncing at all.

Ubuntu :: Folder Structure And Installations

Dec 20, 2010

Just installed Ubuntu on a Dell M1730 and working my way around the system. Biggest problem I'm struggling with is the folder structure and privileges. I've downloaded a few programs that don't come in DEB format. Consequently I'm not sure how they should be installed. As a windows user my assumption is that there would be a program files like folder but I'm not sure what the Ubuntu equivalent is. I've tried /opt/ but then I run into lots of privilege issues that can only be resolved by chmod. Can you advise which the location that programs should be installed in for manual installations and under which user (Standard or SU)?

Server :: Stop Users Moving Up Folder Structure?

May 12, 2011

I have a Ubuntu 10.10 server; I have created several users and wish them to have their own web space (with a unique domain name for each). I have therefore created www folders within their home folder and created new Virtual Servers to host each domain name and point to the users www folder in their home folder. They can then use an FTP client to upload files. This all works well.

However, I would like to stop a user from going back up a level and traversing the tree. They can currently go back up to /home and see other users names.

General :: Ubuntu - Rename Home Folder Structure To System Language?

Oct 14, 2010

I have installed the Ubuntu distro first in Portuguese. Then, I decided I wanted the English language. I would like that the default folders like "Desktop" and "Documents" were renamed to this names, instead of staying in their Portuguese equivalent.

I can not guarantee this, but I am almost certain I did successfully convert the folder names from Portuguese to English on a previous install when I decided to change the language. So, I suppose this is possible.

Cisco router has a nat 1-to-1 to Ubuntu machine with the static public ip x.y.x.z The Ubuntu machine has one only interfaces eth0 bridged with a virtual tap0 in the virtual br0 interface. This because on the Ubuntu machine is running OpenVPN in bridged mode. I want to reach a private share on the host 192.168.100.2 using the x.y.w.z static IP. Is that possibile? CentOS 5 :: Move System And File Structure To New Box

Feb 7, 2011

I am new to Linux and not sure how to explain what I want to do, but I will give it a try. I have a system running CentOS 5.x on a system the is dying. Is there an easy way to migrate the system over to a brand new system that I recently purchased? I only have / and swap partitions, so nothing fancy; however, I have read that Linux is nothing like Windows when it comes to applications, and I could simply drag and drop files on the new server; however, I suspect that there is more involved than that. I hope I can just move the files over, and the system will boot; however, I am worried about new hardware on the new system. I am looking for recommendations to this issue. I am not sure if I have described it correctly; however, just point anything out that I need to change.

Ubuntu :: Rebuild Directory Structure And Recover Files?

Sep 2, 2010

I have a drive with an NTFS partition where all the files were deleted. What I'm looking for is a way to rebuild the directory structure and recover the files. I really, really want the directory structure as the partition contains 460 Gigs of data. Normally I would use the tools here: [URL] but I've never dealt with this much data before. Everything there that I've used creates a pretty messy dump however.

I have used ntfsundelete before but only for a few files at a time. I have no idea what would happen if I tried to run it on a partition of that size. I'm comfortable with data recovery but this amount of data is beyond me. I've run ntfsundelete with no args and from what I can tell of skimming the pages of output all the files are fine. The partition has not been written to.

The .doc files are named "1filename.doc", "2filename.doc" etc. And I've got to rename them to "aaa_1filename.doc", "aaa_2filename.doc", "aaa_3filename.doc" and so on. Tried to dabble quite a bit with the for and mv commands, basically just got a bunch of errors. Every damn time. For 2 hours. The most common error was "mv: missing destination file operand after ..."

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.4: Strange Nfs V4 - Invisible Files?

Mar 11, 2011

Yesterday I installed 11.4. First it did run very nice but now I am facing an odd problem: I am mounting on my new 11.4 box a folder via nfsv4 from an opensuse 11.2 server (updated to kernel 2.6.33.6).

I got some folders where the 11.4 cannot see files which are defenitely present on the server. They are completely invisible to the client! In one particular case I have eg. 108 files in the folder on the server, but the 11.4 box only sees 107. One is missing. It does not show up using ls and I also can't access it blindly using eg. cat. The file does not differ from all the others in that folder regarding permissions/ownership/acls etc. It is also not big (1728 bytes) nor is it a special file (link/socket etc.just a plain C header file). That single file is just not visible when mounting with nfsv4 on the 11.4 box. When mounting it with nfs3 instead the file is visible. But for obvious reasons I want to stick with nfsv4.

I restarted all nfs related daemons on both the server and the client a couple of times but it does not make any difference. I also cannot find any problems in any log files on the server or client up to now. I rebooted the client but not the server (I can't do that right now as it is in heavy production).

I do not see these problems with other opensuse boxes running 11.0/11.2 or 11.3 in my network. They can see/access these files quite nicely. This is really strange. Does any have a clue what is going on here or how I can narrow that problem down?

CentOS 5 :: Live USB Strange Modified Binaries?

Mar 10, 2011

I have CentOS 5.5 running as a desktop, on Live USB with persistent overlay. It's been working great since January. However yesterday I noticed something strange. Almost all the binary files, including those under /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, and /usr/sbin, have been modified, compared to the originals in squashfs.img (I mounted squashfs.img and did a "diff -r" comparison). The timestamps all remain the same, but the sizes of the binary files have been increased by a typical 1 - 3 KB.

The system has never been updated, other than a few minor package installations via yum. It's running behind a firewall with no services except an SSH server on a non-standard port. Checks on log files etc. didn't find anything suspicious, and chkrootkit turned up nothing.

Software :: Recoll Indexing Throwing Strange Errors On Some Files

Nov 15, 2010

I have installed Recoll 1.13.01 on my Ubuntu 10.04 box. I selected certain file directory trees to index and when I build the index using the gui it seems to work fine based on my limited testing. So far, so good.I planned to add a step to my nightly cleanup, backup and other housekeeping script to update the Recoll index. The command in question is recollindex While testing the command line indexing I found that an OLD password protected Windows zip file caused it to throw a bunch of errors. It appeared to continue. I located the offending file and as it was already backed up to DVD media and deleted it. I have also found a couple of other offending files which make me wonder about the robustness of this application.

The next case I had a file Session 12a.odt which for some reason was of 0 bytes - don't know why - perhaps I was just starting to write this document and never put anything in it.

Ubuntu Security :: Finding Two Strange-looking Files On Windows Shared Folders?

Mar 30, 2011

Recently I've been finding two strange-looking files on my Windows shared folders! Their names are 'khy' and 'qffhtx.exe', they appear as hidden, and they're hard to delete!! especially the first one because it has no extension. I use Ubuntu 10.10, but I am worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP. Today I tried to open the .exe file in nautilus to see what is inside and I received the message "Unable to open archive", 'khy' is apparently an empty text file. Then I unmounted my /home partition so my files are out of the way, and I ran the .exe file using WINE,

Now I have a strange-looking applet on my top panel!! and it says "Script paused", also it says "Exit', and also Wine command prompt says something strange about "LockWindowUpdate", don't imagine it I'll post the screenshots so you can see it for yourselves. Also --and this is weird-- the virus apparently is trying to call a Windows process named csrcs.exe!! Again, I'll post the screenshots.

If this is a virus, then it's like a fish out of the water on my Ubuntu, it's probably trying to do something but it can't find its way around, it's kinda funny, but Im worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP, I'm having a hard time trying to remember the name KHY, it's a very weird acronym, it's the acronym of a disease, according to what I googled, i'm sure it's a virus!!! Anyway it's HARD to remember!!!

what can I do about this? How can I see the "script"? can Ubuntu kick its ***?how can I clean my Windows?
