CentOS 5 :: Live USB Strange Modified Binaries?

Mar 10, 2011

I have CentOS 5.5 running as a desktop, on Live USB with persistent overlay. It's been working great since January. However yesterday I noticed something strange. Almost all the binary files, including those under /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, and /usr/sbin, have been modified, compared to the originals in squashfs.img (I mounted squashfs.img and did a "diff -r" comparison). The timestamps all remain the same, but the sizes of the binary files have been increased by a typical 1 - 3 KB.

The system has never been updated, other than a few minor package installations via yum. It's running behind a firewall with no services except an SSH server on a non-standard port. Checks on log files etc. didn't find anything suspicious, and chkrootkit turned up nothing.

CentOS 5 :: 5.6 X86_64 Asking For 32 Bit Binaries During Installation?

May 28, 2011

I am trying to install a minimalistic centos 5.6 VM.I have pulled the necessary RPMs from the centos website, using the following command:

yumdownloader --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=CentOS-5.6-x86_64
--destdir=/tmp/transitRPMs/ --installroot=/tmp/transitRPMs/ --resolve kernel
vim-minimal wget yum dhclient grub rootfiles openssh-clients openssh-server sysklogd passwd star attr[code].....

I do not see any 32 bit packages in the /tmp/transitRPMS directory, which good, and that is is what I expected / want.I have also downloaded the repodata and images directory from one of the CENTOS mirros, from the 5.6 directory.I am using the netinstall CD to kickstart the VM and using my local HTTP repository , which I created using the RPMs pulled from the yumuploader command. When I try to install the VM, after the disks are formatted, the installer starts asking for missing i386 or i686 packages. This is happening in both interactive installs, where I select absolutely no package; and also in the kickstart installs, where I have specified @core for the packages. I am unable to understand this behaviour. It was not so in CENTOS 5.5 x86_64 bit. I do not want to install 32 bit packages on my 64 bit machine.

Red Hat :: List Modified Configuration Files [ CentOS 5.4 ]?

Feb 20, 2010

I am searching for a program which may be used in order to display a list of modified (non-distribution-default) configuration files. For example, assume we have installed package "example-utility" which uses /etc/example-utility.conf as one of its configuration files. The package provides a default configuration file upon its installation. Assume we have modified /etc/example-utility.conf according to our needs. This file should be included in the listing produced by the program I am looking for.

If such a tool does not exist, I would like to create it. However, I am new to RPM-based systems, and, as such, I am having difficulties finding the necessary documentation. Should I be reading the yum source code? Is there some sort of document describing the package database on RH/CentOS/etc. systems and how 3rd party applications are supposed to work with this database?

CentOS 5 :: Strange Message When Running Yum?

Jun 22, 2009

I recently reinstalled CentOS, and after a ton of updates, I'm just about finished getting things set up again. However, today I've noticed this really interesting message whenever I run yum. Just for demonstration, I'm going to remove gnome-screensaver, since I prefer the Xscreensaver anyway. This is the complete output, with the strange message highlighted;$ sudo yum remove gnome-screensaverLoaded plugins: fastestmirrorSetting up Remove ProcessResolving DependenciesThere are unfinished transactions remaining. You might consider running yum-complete-transaction first to finish them.

Ubuntu :: Replacing Binaries Did Not Work / Why Is So?

Jul 21, 2010

I am new to Linux. Thanks in advance for correcting my misunderstanding and answering.

I would like to modify the gdm for testing purpose. To get started, I first get the source code of gdm (using apt-get source, or download the latest version from official gdm website) and compile it without any modification. Then I replaced one of the binary file of gdm. However, it resulted in "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode" error.

My questions are:
1. why simply replacing the binary did not work?
2. I think it is possible that the way I configure/compile the program wrongly. So, is there a way to know how those programs are compiled in the distribution?

General :: Can Binaries Run Across Distributions - E.g. Red Hat 7.2 And Ubuntu 10.04 ?

Jul 21, 2010

I have no real LINUX system experience and therefore the company has tasked me to get a VMware Appliance running in which they can build their product.

The product runs on Red Hat 7.2. I have attempted many times to get Red Hat 7.2 installed on VMware player. It always fails when I get to Xwindows. I need Xwindows as the company is going to use NetBeans 6.9 for development.

I downloaded an Ubuntu 10.04 Appliance, which runs fine.

The idea is to build the product on the Ubuntu and run it on the Red Hat target.

All systems are x86 platforms.

Debian Programming :: Building Gtk-sharp2 Binaries On Testing

Nov 20, 2014

I am trying to build architecture specific binaries of gtk-sharp2. So far I have been unable to get gtk-sharp2 to build even without specifying a specific architecture. I got the source with apt-get source gtk-sharp2 and attempted ./configure, make, but it fails to build with the error message:

Code: Select allNo rule to make target 'thread.c', needed by 'thread.lo'.

I've also tried downloading the source directly from the mono project [URL] ...., but when building it fails with

Code: Select all#error "Only <glib.h> can be included directly."

This site [URL] .... provides a patch to fix the error, but when I applied it I got the same error.

I think the Debian version applied the patch correctly, but for some reason I still get that other error message.

These message outputted by configure may point to the problem:

"checking if gcc supports -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions... no"
"./configure: line 12920: enable_msi: command not found"

Software :: System News Program For Posting Binaries?

Apr 1, 2010

It seems strange to me that there are so few newsreader programs for Linux that are good for posting binaries, if they do it at all. For a community with such an ethos of sharing, there sure are a lot of "grab"-only newsreaders!

I have used newspost a lot in the past, but I encounter fatal errors when connecting through stunnel, as I now tend to do, and development seems to be dead with that program. Can anyone recommend any other program - console, X, whatever - that will post multipart binary files?

Software :: Make Yum Recognize Newly Installed Binaries?

Jan 21, 2011

I installed an Oracle-provided RPM that installs a library, let's call it libUSEME1.0, into /usr/lib/oracle/yada/yada2/libUSEME.1.0. I then have an RPM (perl-DBD-Oracle) that depends on libraries from the Oracle-provided RPM. (For now, let's say it depends on libUSEME.1.0)

I then try to do both a 'rpm -ivh' and a 'yum localinstall', on that perl-DBD-Oracle RPM. However, yum still complains that this dependency is missing. The only semi-useful post I could find from Google shows that setting things like LD_PRELOAD won't change yum's mind - it still says the dependency is missing.

What is the proper way to demonstrate to yum that you have already installed a library on which an rpm (or package) depends?
