I have installed squid using CentOS 5. The server is dedicated only for squid proxy server. I want to know how can I disable unwanted services which load at booting time. Like sendmail,samba,etc etc. These services take memory and are not in use. I does not know how can I make my server only for squid proxy service by removing unwanted services?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed CentOS 5.3. There I select desktop package (Gnome and KDE) didn't select server in CentOS 5.3 installation gui. I want to connect to the windows active directory domain in our company. To do this I want to run the samba service. But it is not listed in the services. (#service --status-all) but I cant see the samba config file smb.conf why I cant run this other services smbd, nmbd is also not listed. But winbind is listed and I started it.

I installed Centos 5.5 on a home PC to be used remotely.
All server daemons work fine but only start if the user is logged in.
How do I set the SSH server to start whenever the PC is turned on, rather than when the user is logged in? I read the chkconfig man page online but couldn't find anything.
Plus I put a script in my startup services to be run whenever the computer boots (I'm guessing when the users logs in). How do I go about setting that to run too whenever the system boots instead?

Having my Diploma Final Project on setting up a virtual mail server within Local Area Network (LAN) only. I had follow this how-to [URL] and complete up to squirrealmail web mail. I added two new user to try on sending and receiving mail. It works. I run CentOS on VMplayer. I using my laptop to do all the stuff, the laptop default OS is windows 7, I install VM player on it and run CentOS inside the VM Player.
I want to do testing on Windows 7 side by installing Thunderbird email client program, I want to connect to mail server with SMTP, IMAP/POP3 using the email service. I have problem while setting up user account on Thunderbird, Thunderbird seems like cannot detect my CentOS mail server. How? Do I have to do any other configuration on CentOS? Any DNS? Port number for IMAP, POP3 or SMTP?

The scenario is I have two clients machines have IP address 192.168.1.200 (The Manager) and 192.168.1.201 (Manager Assistant). The issue is I assign 512kbps to the Manager IP address and 128 to his assistant. When either of them download it start from 60 KB/Sec they finally get 11 KB/Sec which is wrong. If I disable the assistant delay pools settings then the Manager get 60KB/Sec continuously. By enabling both squid does not show any error.

I installed squid 2.7 and want to use squid_session external acl rule. But there is no squid_session in any dir, looked everywhere. On my Ubuntu box I also have squid 2.7 and there I have squid_session.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm running debian unstable and since there was the switch to dependency based boot I can no longer control my boot services.I used to suppress the services that I use rarely during boot with: sudo update-rc.d -f myservice remove This arranged the links in /etc/rc?.d and everything worked.
Now this command only says: update-rc.d: using dependency based boot sequencing.This seems to work until I upgrade the service to a new version and it is enabled again.Do you have any idea of how to disable boot services permanently with the new system?

I recently discovered upstart is launching sshd on my machine even though I disabled it with `sudo update-rc.d -f ssh remove`. I tried to find a way to prevent upstart from launching ssh by default, but the best I can think of is removing /etc/init/ssh.conf (I just uninstalled openssh-server).I'd like to disable it without doing this, though. This would make it easier to enable sshd when I need it

I installed squid non the CentOS 5 server. When I try to start squid I am receiving following error:
# service squid start
init_cache_dir /var/spool/squid... Starting squid: [FAILED]
The logs indicate the following:
$ sudo tail /var/log/squid/squid.out
squid: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypt.so.1: cannot open shared object file: Permission denied .....
Although, all the libraries which are shown as missing are present, but still I am seeing the following.
$ ldd /usr/sbin/squid
