CentOS 5 :: The Centos-release-notes Package Simply Contains A Bunch Of Text/html Files That Nothing Else Relies Upon?

Apr 3, 2009

Why does centos-release-notes have any dependancies ?

I can see no reason why centos-relese-notes should depend on centos-release when I try "yum erase centos-release-notes" I am told there are 72 dependancies including completely irrelevant packages such as tar all because of this unnecessary dependancy.

The centos-release-notes package simply contains a bunch of text/html files that nothing else relies upon, so why the dependancies ?

CentOS 5 :: Moving Files To Second Partition?

Dec 8, 2009

Here is a dumb question (For some reason I can never remember Linux commands but can always remember DOS commands). I don't know what it is, but I think it's the "everything is a file or a directory" nature of Linux that I can't remember it.

Anyhow, I have an instance running on Amazon EC2. I have noticed recently that FreePBX (an Asterisk GUI) is warning me of shortage of disk space. So here is the output:

[root@ip-10-251-123-3 ~]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 9.9G 8.8G 621M 94% /
/dev/sda2 147G 188M 140G 1% /mnt

[Code].....

So, it seems that I have a lot of space in sda2 but I don't know how to access it. how to do a symbolic link (or I can search with google) to move some folders to sda2 and then link them.

CentOS 5 :: Star Not Tarring All Files?

May 24, 2010

I have CentOS 5.5 installed with this uname -a result: Linux 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5.centos.plus #1 SMP Wed Mar 17 20:01:32 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux.I am trying to use star to back up the machine, but it seems to stop before it has tarred all the files. Here is my star command:

star -c -FFFFF -xdev -sparse -acl -link-dirs -wtardumps -xattr -H=exustar -copysymlinks level=0 f=/backup/24-May-2010-Full/Full.tar -C / . This then runs for a short while, creates an archive of about 230MB and reports: star: Success. Error moving extended header '././@PaxHeader'.finished!

I am using this star release star 1.5a75 (i386-redhat-linux-gnu) and I have used .exclude on some my directories. When I check the files archived using -t, only a limited number of the files have actually been tarred. It is also reporting that this is a partial dump rather than a full dump.

CentOS 5 :: Smbclient Can't Overwrite Files?

Jun 17, 2010

I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my smb store. The CentOS box is merely a client of the smb share, and I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I'm 95% certain that the server runs Windows Server 2003.I can create a new file, but if I need to overwrite it I need to delete the file, and then copy the new version over.My Windows XP machine can overwrite files perfectly fine.

Using the cp command I'll get this error: (/mnt/storage/foo.txt already exists)
[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`

CentOS 5 :: Read-only Filesystem With Some Rw Files?

Jun 8, 2011

I'm attempting to build a load balancing cluster for shared web hosting clients and the only thing left is security. Given the track record with some of these sites, I don't trust them being centralized. We've had rootkits on some of the other servers that replaced system binaries, mostly ssh to capture passwords. I figured the only real way to lock it down tight enough to keep this from happening is to use a live cd for the filesystem or read-only toggle USB stick. But I also need to mount a rw drive to store the clients data and config files that are bound to change.

Is this really the way to go about this? If so do I simply make a live cd iso and edit the files within to handle mounting a rw hard drive and linking data and configuration files to that drive? I've considered just leaving all the data on the physical hard disk and mounting it as ro on boot for binaries and such but can't that just be changed with the right permissions?

Red Hat :: List Modified Configuration Files [ CentOS 5.4 ]?

Feb 20, 2010

I am searching for a program which may be used in order to display a list of modified (non-distribution-default) configuration files. For example, assume we have installed package "example-utility" which uses /etc/example-utility.conf as one of its configuration files. The package provides a default configuration file upon its installation. Assume we have modified /etc/example-utility.conf according to our needs. This file should be included in the listing produced by the program I am looking for.

If such a tool does not exist, I would like to create it. However, I am new to RPM-based systems, and, as such, I am having difficulties finding the necessary documentation. Should I be reading the yum source code? Is there some sort of document describing the package database on RH/CentOS/etc. systems and how 3rd party applications are supposed to work with this database?

So far, everything I've attempted has failed, but scp still exits with a return code of 0. It only displays a line of *** and exits immediately. CentOS 5 :: Net Install From USB Puts Boot Files On USB Not HD?

May 14, 2009

I have done multiple net (http) installs of CentOS from a USB stick, and each time the installs appear to go fine, but the machine cannot be booted unless the USB stick is inserted. The net install files are replaced with a syslinux directory by the installer. I thought that I had taken care during install to tell the installer not to put anything on the USB stick. This particular machine (Varari 1U server) has no optical drive, so for now I'm using the USB stick.

Does anyone here know how to get the installer to put everything on the HD? I unchecked the USB stick when the partitioning screen came up and yet it still stuck what I assume are boot files on the stick. Be gentle, I'm a developer, not a Linux guru.I have a second question as well. One reason this machine does not have an optical drive, is that I can't get the damn cover off. If anyone here knows how to get the top cover of a 1U Varari server off who's release buttons appear to be stuck,
