CentOS 5 :: CentOS 5 Home Server Power Consumtion? (features, Kernel Versions Etc.)?
Feb 28, 2010
I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..
So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?
2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?
Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).

I am running my web and game server on ubuntu 8.04 lts and am considering in reinstalling a new OS. I would like to try another different OS(most probably CentOS or Debian and I saw alot of good comments about them). I'm not sure what version I am going to install. I searched on websites of companies that rents dedicated servers and noticed that they mainly use Debian 4 or 5 and CentOS 5 or 4.7. I would like you to tell me which versions do you prefer for CentOS and Debian servers.

Is it possible to list/find/compare the program versions on a Centos system, against Redhat/Centos Errata/Security/Bug lists? Sort of looking for a way to make sure that all the packages on a system are ok, and not a security risk-- Without having to update every package. A pseudo code, in my mind is:

I had a power failure the other day and my server shutdown abruptly. After bringing the server up I noticed that the /var partition came up as read only. I was not able to edit the crontab, not able to write to files within /var/log/ and do other write operations within /var.
I did a mount and it showed that /var was mounted read and write but when trying to run certain operations the system was still saying that it was read only.

I have built a Centos 5.3 server for a friend of mine that is being used as a NAS server. The server has 4 1TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration and a dedicated non raid system drive for the OS. My friend isnt very Linux literate so I need this bow to be relatively simple. I have worked most of it out but have a question with regards to remote reboot.
I need to be able to shut this device down through the power switch without human intervention (at the moment when the power switch is pushed the server asks to confirm shutdown) the server wont have a Monitor connected so this isn't practical. Is it possible to use the power switch to do an clean, immediate shutdown?
The other option is shutdown through a web page is this something that has been done before? I know he can do it through terminal by issuing a shutdown now command but as I said this guy wants something simple. I don't really want to explain everytime he needs to shut the Server down how to do it if he can just do it via a website or even with the power button.

Before to describe my problem I want to say that I searched a lot on the internet and I think I tried all the solutions provided by other users to similar problems.
I've got an IBM xSeries 346 server running CentOS 5.5 with all updates applied with yum.
The video card is an ATI Radeon (lspci says: 01:06.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]).
Everything worked fine until a bad day where there was an environmental power failure and the server crashed.
I turned it on, I manually check the file system, some files went lost and after the reboot the X server didn't start.
After the first boot I had problem with /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, sbin/multipath.static and /dev/cpu/microcode, I solved them and now the message it shows is:
"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface) It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"
I choose OK and it appears an empty log, if I go in /var/log/gdm and I do an ls -al:
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 04:44 :0.log.4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 28 04:44 :0.log.3
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log.2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log.1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Oct 29 04:52 :0.log
So a lot of empty log files.
I press enter on the OK that appears at the bottom of the screen and it says: Would you like to try to configure the X server?
I choose Yes, I enter the root password and appears the following messages:
Couldn't start X server on card 0
Couldn't start X server with old config, trying with a fresh configuration
Then another messages:
Trying to restart the X server, I press enter on OK and it loops the initial message ("Failed to start the X server...)

I have problem with onboard ATI ES1000. Server details:
Supermicro X7SBI, Q6600, 8G ram. Centos 5.5 minimal installation, without X.
Problem is that with all kernel-xen x86_64 from current kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.x86_64 back to kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.el5.x86_64 after kernel boots monitor goes blank and says "no video, going to power save".
Google finds similar problems and sugestions was to add "nomodeset". With this option monitor also blanks after kernel boot, but says "out of range". Other options to modify xorg.conf does not apply, becouse there is no X installed.
I try with multiple monitors, without success. This happens only with 64bit kernel-xen. All other 32 and 64 bit kernels and 32bit kernel-xen works fine, video is ok. This happens to 6 servers, all are same hardware, used as cluster. Installation with "linix text" allways is fine, video disappears after first reboot when standart kernel is booted. I also tryed with almost all possible "vga=xxxx" kernel options and none of them works.
What else to try?

I have a small problem on my Compaq Evo Centos 5.4 web server. The web server runs just fine, the problem is it fails to restart from a power outage. Simple edit the BIOS. No! For a reason I can't think of the keyboard stops working after a few key strokes following the F10 to enter BIOS setup. Then its a power cycle. If left to BOOT the PC and keyboard are fine. After hearing about viruses which get to the BIOS I will ask can NIX get that far so I can adjust the Power ON?

I have one server at home, connected through a router that gives me a static IP:192.168.1.2 - My PC192.168.1.3 - CentOS serverI enabled the port 80 into router forwarding system and I can connect properly to CentOS server, using the IP my internet provider gives me. My router automatically forwards a changed IP to my dyndns.com account so I can also access the server through a domain name (I pay to have it linked to one of my domains). My next step is to configure the mail server (dovecot) , so I can send emails from my local server(192.168.1.3).I was wondering if anyone has any tutorial links or tips to have the mail server configured through a home internet provider + home router.

OS: CentOS 5.3
vsftpd ver: vsftpd-2.0.5-12.el5_3.1
I installed vsftpd server in one of my servers using "yum install vsftpd" command. NFS server is running in the other server and mounted as "/data" in this FTP server. root in FTP server has also root authority in NFS server. All the files and sub-folders under "/data" in FTP server have 755 or 766 mode. Even I modified vsftpd setting to allow root login.
When I login as root to FTP server with FileZilla client, I can see all the file list in root home directory and move to /data directory. I can download any file in a local HDD but I can not download any file in /data directory.

I am wondering what is the fastest way for me to move files from a VPS running CentOS to my home PC? I do not have FTP or anything like that installed. Are there commands I can enter in putty, for example, that will simply download an entire directory on the VPS onto my home PC?

I am trying to set up a web based FTP site on my home server, I got ftp up and running and I can log into it using an ftp client but I want to set it up so I can get to it from the web. I put the directory in the www/html folder but that does not seem to help it
If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I also need to let anonymous users get access to it.

I have a CentOS box set up as a small home server right now. It is running a Apache Server. A SVN server and is going be a file server for all my friends. The problem is that it I need to add more SATA ports. RAID is not a big deal to me so the card can be a simple add in card. I am limited to PCI because the board does not have any pci expres slots. I am also interested in what hard drives that card would work with. I am hoping to keep them to 500 Gigs min. The motherboard has two built in SATA prots but I don't use them have had bad luck with them in the past
System:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ cpu
MSI K8N Neo Series motherboard
3 IDE Hard Drives
1 CD Drive

The first server I installed installed fine. The second server, installed with the same config, went to "kernel panic not syncing no init found try passing init= option in kernel" error. I tried reinstalling but it keeps going to that error after install reboot. The storage is ISCSI connected via Intel Server Adapter, which allows it to boot from ISCSI. Not sure if that's the cause for the problem, but the first server is connected to the same ISCSI and installed just fine.
Is there a way that I can make sure ISCSI module installs during installation? Although I think it is installed since it's able to copy the files and setup /dev/sda. I just wana make sure that it installs during setup.

I am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.
