CentOS 5 Server :: Crond Not Executing Script

I have a php script that i made to check if the internet is working and if not, it should execute a command that starts a service on my server (service jistarter start), and i want to run it every 3 minutes, so i added it to the crontab, this is how it looks:
The problem is that cron isn't executing it or something.. i don't know but the service it was intended to start, doesn't start.
The thing is that the script runs fine when i run it myself, in all the 3 methods it woks fine: "/usr/bin/php /srv/checkping.php" or "php /srv/checkping.php" or "/srv/checkping,php" (it has chmod 755):

I recently went to make a change to crontab (crontab -e) but by mistake typed crontab -r. My crontab file disappeared - no problem just recreate I thought.
After recreating it with 30 22 * * * /sbin/shutdown -h now
I though all would work and my server would shut down. Even though crond is running it did not work

I'm trying to add several cron jobs. I have a folder (/etc/cron.myapp) with several subfolders in it (30minute, 3minute, daily, hourly). Each of these folders contains a script.Runnng/usr/bin/run-parts /etc/cron.myapp/3minute/will execute the contents of that folder.I have tried adding the following entries to /etc/crontab with no luck, and nothing is showing up in /var/log/cron

I have installed Centos 5 for Oracle on my PC. I observe that everytime I have to execute .bash_profile. Otherwise I get command not found message.How to change this behaviour so that it executes automatically everytime I open a new terminal or a tab.The bash_profile is as follows. I notice that the same entry is in another Centos 5 installation in another PC, But I don't have to executeeverytime the bash_profile .

I have a CentOS system totally devoted to a 500GB disk. I have an additional disk mounted via an external device that will not execute scripts that are located on that device.

I tried using cron to start rtorrent. But I couldnt start it successfully. My crontab looks like this.

hi! everyone does anybody experience this? i have ubuntu server, php5, apache2. every time i visit my website the script is not executed by my apache instead it will downloading my script with application/x-httpd-php file type. how can i fix this?

Execute a script as a non-root user at boot time. The script lives in /home/sbrown/scripts and has the executable bits set. If I run the script locally in the shell it behaves as normal, but will not at boot time It's a very simple 2 line script:

sudo -u sbrown screen -S irssi irssi
Here's WHAT DOESN'T work:
I put this in /etc/rc.local: sudo -u sbrown /home/sbrown/scripts/irssi_exec I also tried just copying the script to /etc/init.d/ and chowning it to root then ran update-rc.d irssi_exec defaults and rebooted. Still not working. This is on a Debian Squeeze box... what am I missing? Surely it should be simpler than this

I am writing a script which will fetch data from different machines and display it on single terminal. I have created a file named SERVERNAMES containing ip address of machines I need to monitor. Then for every IP I am issuing ssh command to get date on that machine. However When I am trying it on the script it is just giving me output of first server and it is ignoring rest servers mentioned in file. ssh works fine without password for all machines mentioned in SERVERNAMES.

I own a CentOS 5 VPS. I typed crontab -e, and then I added the following line to automatically have my server backup mysql

When I go in and look, it doesn't place any files in /home/dbbackup. When I run

And what puzzled me is that I can succeed in running it in command line, but fail in crond service . I always get this warning: pidof : coomand not found.

I have a problem with compiling of mod_ruby-1.3.0 After a succesfull configure i get a error in the make, it say "make: *** [apachelib.o] error 1" . I have two servers, both running CentOS, but one running Cpanel as the control panel and the other running Webmin.
I would like to sync the web folders using rsync. However, when I sync the files from the Cpanel host the permissions look as follows:

But that doesn't work on the Webmin server which needs the following:

It seems the Cpanel install has the group as 'nobody' whilst webmin has it the same as the file owner. I can fix this by running:

But as the file transfers will be frequent, I don't want the files to be inaccessible until chown is run.
So, what I really want to know is - how can I change things on the 'webmin' server so that files with ownership owner:nobody will run?

I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..
So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?
2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?
Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).

I have a few mail servers, a mail log server and a web server running on Centos 5. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves.
I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions: How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program? How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?

If I ssh from my laptop (running F10) to the server (centos 5.2) it asks for the password, but everytime I enter the correct password it says incorrect password. when I do the same from the server to my laptop I can get in just fine. I think my passwords are stored as ssha in the LDAP (I tried clear passwords and that dosen't work either).

I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

I have a centos 5.5 server, without a monitor connected to it.Sometime i need to connect to it with VNC, but maximum resolution is 800x600.How can i increase it at least 1024x748 ??I tried in system-config-display changing the monitor to a generic CRT 1024x768, and rebooted.But only allowed resolutions are 800x600 and 640x480.

I have some trouble with my hp workstation xw4400 with an ATI FireGL 3300 and the X-Server. There was no problem with the graphical install routine and the graphical boot works fine. But when the system changes into the login-screen, then it results in a black screen and a more or less frozen system.

I am running an application that requires use of my /etc/hosts file. In it, I have my machine name and its LAN ip address. The program creates a service on a specific port, then attempts to connect to it based on the host name. So my hosts file has to be correct.I added the nameservers to resolv.conf and now my application will not run. My guess is that the computer is checking the name servers first, timing out then checking the hosts file.Is there a way I can tell the system to check the hosts file first, then DNS. I thought it should behave that way by default, but it does not appear to.
