Ubuntu :: Disk Checks During Boot Without Any Apparent Reason

May 21, 2011

I've been an Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit user for one year. My Ubuntu distro is installed on an ext2 file system. Occasionally, I experience disk checks during boot without any system freeze or power loss.Sometimes, once reboot, the system works fine but Evolution Mail requests a new account, as if it was used for the very first time.Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Ubuntu :: Disk Space Disappearing For No Apparent Reason?

May 20, 2011

I woke up this morning to a message saying I have low disk space in /home. My /home partition is 150 GB, but I had only 4 kB left. I promptly rebooted, which helped, but I still only have 40 GB available. Now, I use only 26 GB, so where the rest is, I don't know. In the disk usage analyzer, a lot of the space was not accounted for, as shown in the image.

Here is the output from df -h and du

simen@simen-laptop:~$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda5 55G 8.0G 45G 16% /
none 2.0G 368K 2.0G 1% /dev

[Code].....

I checked out .gvfs and it's just a CD I have playing. I really don't know what's going on.

Ubuntu Networking :: Eth0 Disappeared For No Apparent Reason?

May 4, 2010

I was struggling frantically this morning for about 5 minutes after I booted up my computer, and wondering why it couldn't connect to the internet. After I figured out that the automatic wired network "Auto eth0" was gone from the network manager, it was easy to manually add it back. But why did it disappear in the first place?

CentOS 5 Server :: Crashes For No Apparent Reason?

Jun 14, 2009

Ive been searching half the internet for a solution for a strange problem im having with a server (CentOS 5.2 Final). For no apparent reason, the server will just be powered off.I've looked in the dmesg log and /var/log/messages file, but that doesnt show anything, except the "syslogd 1.4.1: restart." message after booting it up again, and hours in advance of the crash a "suhosin" alert message.

Fedora Installation :: Crashed For No Apparent Reason Several Times?

Jul 1, 2011

I have just installed (after a series of crashes during the install) Fedora 15. I also have Ubuntu Natty installed and use it primarily but I wanted to reach out and try new distros.I've wanted to try Fedora and finally got enough nerve to try. Installing it crashed for no apparent reason several times.ehow it installed and booted right to Fedora. However, when finally figuring out how to run the updates, I began to have the same problem.(Someone elsewhere suggested trying to update through command line--which I did finally though I had a few crashes doing this).

Now I am logging in and then it will just inadvertently crash. I could be in firefox, or using terminal, etc. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to why this is happening and I feel frustrated. I really want to test out Fedora (it looks so nice!) but can't manage to stay afloat more than a few minutes. I might also mention that this does not happen in Ubuntu at all so I can't account for the issues. I have much to learn but I feel a bit intimidated by Fedora because it's so new to me.

Networking :: Network Stopped Working For No Apparent Reason

Apr 8, 2011

Network stopped working about a month ago. I installed ubuntu again, and network worked fine, and I turned off updates to keep things stable. Now network stopped working again. No changes had been made to it.I put in the ubuntu install cd, and network works fine off of it. I did not reinstall again. ifconfig shows eth0 with correct ip address, but 0 RX/TX packets.

Cant ping anything from it, and cant ping to it from other computers.I'd really rather not reinstall yet again, any ideas on how I should go about diagnosing this problem?Ubuntu 2.6.35-28-generic-pae #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 1 14:58:06 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux

Networking :: Sudden Network Troubles On Debian With No Apparent Reason?

Apr 7, 2011

I just want to see if anyone else is having problems connecting to networks, wifi or wired. For some reason, I can see both wired and wireless networks available but when I try to connect, it times out. I updated a couple of days ago and suddenly started having problems today. Anyone else having the same problem?I have only tried the router and repeater I have to connect to. My other computers are working just fine. One is actually running as a Debian server with no GUI (which I do not update as often). The other is a Mac.

Ubuntu :: How To Disable Boot Time Disk Checks

Aug 1, 2011

These days I see the disk check that is popping up when my Ubuntu is booting up quite frequently. It says 'press C to cancel' but C (or Shift C or CTRL C or CTRL ALT C) does not have any effect. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE reboots but again ends up in the vicious loop of disk check. How to bypass it? When I need to critically enter the desktop for an urgent pressing info waiting for 20 to 25 minutes disk check is kind of difficult.

Ubuntu :: Disable Frequent Disk Checks In Lucid?

May 11, 2010

Since upgrading (fresh install) to Lucid, I've been having to go through disk checks about once or twice a week on boot. I'm not sure why Lucid thinks it needs to check my disk so often. I looked into it a bit, and found a command that was supposed to stop disk checks happening so often.

Code: sudo tune2fs -i 2w `mount | awk '$3 == "/" {print $1}'` is supposed to set it to 2 weeks. I used "/home" too as I have home on a separate partition and didn't want that to be checked too. All was fine until I booted up to find another disk check today. It can sometimes take over half an hour to finish and C to cancel doesn't always work either.

I always shutdown cleanly, unless Ubuntu completely locks up, which happens maybe once every six months (although it did happen yesterday, but I have rebooted it a few times since then with no checks happening until just now). Is there a way to just disable checks completely? I wouldn't mind running them manually every now and then, I just don't want to do it as often as Lucid does.

Ubuntu :: No Progress Indication When System Checks Disk(s) On Startup

Jan 21, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 does not appear to have an indication of progress when the system checks HDs on start up. In previous versions - at least back to 8 - I think there was either a
progress bar or % reading to give an indication of progress of the scan / check .Is it possible to switch this back on in 10.10?Also how do you control the frequency of disk checks on start up?

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Checks Disks After Every Boot?

May 15, 2010

Ever since my upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4, every time I reboot the system it does a full disk check. /var/log/boot.log tells me that fsck thinks that the file systems contain errors or that it wasn't cleanly unmounted. And yet, it doesn't seem to actually find errors, and a clean reboot starts another check (again with it thinking something is dirty). I dual-boot with Windows, and reboot from there with the same problem.Again, all of this is new with 10.4 and was not happening with 9.10.Is there a way to find out when/how/why the disks are not being unmounted cleanly?

SUSE / Novell :: Hangs And KDE Is Not Loaded Giving Reason That Disk Is Out Of Space

Feb 26, 2009

I am having dual boot system Opensuse 11.1 and Windows vista. I have allotted about 5 GB space to home partition. Now sometimes I copy/move files from Windows partitions to /home, this is easily done. But when I restart the computer, It hangs and KDE is not loaded giving reason that disk is out of space. I have to work on commandline and delete some files from /home to free some space, only then I can restart the computer normally. This is very annoying. When I copy/move files then Opensuse should immediately give me a warning. It seems nonsense to not start kde.

Ubuntu Installation :: Disk Error On /boot With Dual Boot On Dual Disk

Dec 30, 2010

I have a (slightly complicated) dual/multi boot system.

I keep getting boot errors (when choosing ubuntu from the grub2 menu)

Code:
Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot

If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.

My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.

I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).

This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.

Hardware :: Fedora 11 RAID 1 - Disk Failure - Boot From The Single Working Disk?

Oct 16, 2009

my Fedora 11 system is not starting anylonger. It stops with the message:

Code:

VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem on dev dm-0

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).

Debian Installation :: No Boot Disk Has Been Detected Or Disk Has Failed

Nov 3, 2015

I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.

I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.

I will update the topic later..

My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.

Hardware :: Reach Information Of A CDROM After Apparent EOF?

Aug 15, 2010

I have in my hand a CDROM with photos created by some greedy photographer. When I mount it I can see two files in there, two .exe executables about 7.7 MBs in size each. When I try to create an ISO of the cdrom, I get an IO error and only 16 MBs end up at the file.... so I would expect the photo files after the apparent EOF of the device (or whatever it's called in CDROM jargon).

Is there a way to get past this point so that I could run magicrescue on the rest of the CD so that i can get the rest of the files?

Or are there other handson hacky methods to get to that data?

However, after searching the web and trying lots of things, I've not managed to build pysqlite.

In case it's relevant, setup.cfg contains the following (after attempts at various things having tried following up on some suggestions I found posted elsewhere):
