CentOS 5 :: Poweredge 6450: No Drives Showing On Setup?

Apr 4, 2009

I want to change one of our poweredge 6450 servers over to Linux, specifically CentOS, however, I cannot seem to install the operating system. When I boot to setup, go through the first couple of pages and then go to the page that asks you where to install CentOS, no drives are shown in the list, and I can't continue. I'm guessing there are missing drivers for the SCSI controller or something along that lines, but I'm not sure, and I can't find any answers on Google either.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Installation On A Dell Poweredge 6400 - Error "No Drives Found"

Jul 8, 2009

I am attempting to install CentOS 5 on a Dell poweredge 6400. The drives are configure for Raid 5 with about 67 gigs of space on the server. When I select any option under Partitioning of your hard drive, it gives me an error. " No Drives found - An error has occured - no valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem."

CentOS 5 Server :: RAID0+1 Or Other Setup For 4 Drives?

Mar 30, 2011

I tore down my old ftp server running FreeNAS because it had some issues. I decided to add a couple more drives and install CentOS on it instead. So now I have 4x 2TB drives that I set up yesterday.OS is installed on a usb flash drive exclusively while I chose to set up the 2TB drives in two stripes and then mirrored, for RAID0+1 instead of RAID1+0.

/dev/md0 = drive 1+2 in RAID0
/dev/md1 = drive 3+4 in RAID0
/dev/md2 = md0+md1 in RAID1

Well, the sync time for these two mirrors of blank drives is almost done, having taken some 15+ hours.I chose this setup to have a single 3.6TB file system mirrored to another 3.6TB for "backup". As this is only going to be a headless ftp server, I don't need massive redundancy/backup. A mirror should suffice if I need to pull some files. So now I'm second guessing myself. I'm wondering if it is even worth it to stripe 2 drives into a single volume with such large sync times. Since data xfer will be over internet, I don't require the massive file writing capacity that would be preferable if it were in my home as a NAS. So, the "performance" increase of RAID0 is not strictly mandatory.

I'm wondering if I should just wipe the drives and set them up in JBOD or LVM instead of RAID0 arrays. In case of boot drive failure, I'd be booting a livecd to xfer files elsewhere or recover the boot drive. So, what difference would I see if I were livebooting to md0, md1, md2 for data viewing as opposed to livebooting to an LVM or JBOD array? As an aside, the drives are WD20EARS, which are 4k sectors which I aligned to start at sector 2048 in fdisk.

CentOS 5 :: Install On PowerEdge 2450?

I am trying to install CentOS 5.5 on a older Dell PowerEdge 2450. Is there any reason the install would fail? It does load the initial install screen but when I hit enter, it simply goes to a blank screen with a blinking cursor ( I want to say that it says to me "What are you doing Dave?"), but I won't. It just sits there on this screen.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Not Seeing All RAM On Dell PowerEdge 2650?

Oct 25, 2009

I have two Dell PowerEdge 2650 servers. One is a dual Xeon 3GHz with 4GB of RAM (4 x 1GB sticks). The other is a single Xeon 2.4GHz with 3GB of RAM (2 x 512MB and 2 x 1Gb sticks).

Both are running 32 bit CentOS 5.3. Both are running the same kernel (vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5). I've even diff'ed the two kernels to ensure that they are in fact identical. The only parameters being passed to the kernel via the grub config are "ro root=/dev/sda2"

The BIOS shows 4GB detected on the 4GB server and 3Gb detected on the 3GB server on boot.

Dell OpenManage for the 4GB server shows "Total Installed Capacity 4096 MB, Available to the OS 3804 MB", as I would expect. However, OpenManage for the 3GB server shows "Total Installed Capacity 3072 MB, Available to the OS 1011 MB". (i.e. it is only seeing the first 1Gb of memory).

cat /proc/meminfo confirms the above; the 4GB server shows "MemTotal: 3895980 kB", but the 3GB server shows "MemTotal: 1035024 kB"

I installed the lshw utility, and on the 3GB server it shows all 4 memory sticks, the full 3GB:

*-memory
description: System Memory
physical id: 1000
slot: System board or motherboard

CentOS 5 Networking :: No Link Lights On Any Nic Poweredge 4400

Aug 24, 2010

I'm running a Poweredge 4400 with a 3com card and an intel card covered under e100.
I'm using centos 5.5 in its default server config coming from gentoo.

I have no link on either of the two interfaces, ever. The card initialises with ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready and then falls back to half duplex but still with no connection.

I have manipulated most of the general settings that can be changed with ethtool.
Set to manual configuration with 100/full duplex

The cards are recognized alone and together. I have setup static interfaces with no problems. The ping to the local interface such that:

nic = 192.168.1.10
ping 192.168.1.10

we get back route times and all is well

ping 192.168.1.1
no route...

I have tried several different cables verified good other connections. I have verified the ports I am connecting to work correctly. I have manually shut down the onboard nic (in bios) and tried the 3com card alone. I have tried pci=routeirq, thinking there might be an irq issue.

If this was just the one card, I would install another and move on, but both nics are acting in exactly the same way.

Is it possible that 20% (circa) of 60 memory bank are broken? By the way, memory bank have Lifetime warranty from Kingston. If I reboot again the server affected by this error, the error disappear from messages log file and from OpenManage Web interface.

Is it possible that is a CentOS bug? I had search some relative bugs on Bugzilla but without any results.

For example I have an ntfs partition that I store music on so I can access it on either windows or ubuntu, as well as other partitions. When this issue occurs even my dvd drive appears not to exist. I have to reboot my machine sometimes 4 or 5 times before the drives/partitions show again. I had no issue like this before running the upgrade or using earlier versions of Ubuntu.

Fedora :: F13 | XFCE | Internal Drives Not Showing On Desktop?

Oct 2, 2010

Running:Fedora 13kernel 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.i686desktop: xfce 4.6.2Problem: I have a 1TB drive (SATA) with 2 partitions. The partitions/volumes don't show on the desktop.The volume names are:MASSIVEBACKUP.

Facts:1. When I login using GNOME, both volumes (MASSIVE & BACKUP) are listed on my desktop2. My /etc/fstab has long since been edited to reflect these drives3. Using XFCE: Although the volumes don't show on the desktop, they are indeed mounted. I can see them when performing a "df -h" as well as when opening "File System" and drilling to /media - they are both there. I can also access the contents of both volumes within "File System" (using Thunar).4. Using XFCE: I can access both volumes via command line5. Using XFCE: External drives are not affected. I have one external USB drive that shows and when I plug my Android phone, it too shows on the desktop.

After some exploring, I installed the following:Oct 01 22:17:29 Installed: xfce4-mount-plugin-0.5.5-4.fc12.i686I then added "Mount Devices" to my panel, but...as you've probably figured out - they're already mounted.

Ubuntu :: Intel RAID Controller - Showing 2 Drives?

Apr 24, 2010

I shall start off by saying that I have just jumped from Windows 7 to Ubuntu and am not regretting the decision one bit. I am however stuck with a problem. I have spent a few hours google'ing this and have read some interesting articles (probably way beyond what the problem actually is) but still don't think I have found the answer.I have installed:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release: 10.04
Codename: lucid

I am running the install on an old Dell 8400. My PC has an Intel RAID Controller built into the MB. I have 1 HDD (without RAID) (which is houses my OS install) and then I have 2 1TB drives (These are just NTFS formatted drives with binary files on them nothing more.) in a RAID 1 (Mirroring) Array. The Intel RAID Controller on Boot recognizes the Array as it always has (irrespective of which OS is installed) however, unlike Windows 7 (where I was able to install the Intel RAID controller driver) .Does anyone know of a resolution (which doesn't involve formatting and / or use of some other software RAID solution) - to get this working which my searches have not taken me too?

Fedora Hardware :: Raid Not Detected - Only Showing Seperate Drives / Fix It?

Jan 6, 2010

I recently installed Fedora 12 for use with Amahi HDA. Before installing on the Hard drive I used the LIVE CD to test it out. While using the LIVE CD I could see all my HDD's. My file system, my 2nd Hard Drive, and my Raid 0 Configuration. (2 250GB drives) and could browse all my files on those drives.

After installing the full version on my hard drive, my RAID drives are showing up as seperate drives. I have a Asus P4P800 board using hte SATA raid. I know its FAKERaid and not a true hardware raid.

My goal is to restore the Raid in Fedora and make those drives active. However, i dont want to lose any of the data on those drives. To make sure I wasn't an idiot, i rebooted withthe LIVE CD again and verified that I could see the Raid Array.

Hardware :: RAID 1 - Setup More Than One Partition On Clean Drives?

I've finally found a couple of useful tutorials on setting up RAID in Linux. However, because this is new ground to me, I have a couple of basic questions which I think the tutorial writers gloss over because of their familiarity with the process. My questions are these:

1. Most tutorials speak about setting up only one partition on clean drives. Can I set up more than one (e.g. / and home) to be mirrored as two partitions?

2. When starting with two identical clean drives, do I need to set up my partitions identically on both drives or is it only the partitions that I want mirrored to the second drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Setup Process Not Detecting Hard Drives?

Apr 30, 2010

I'm trying to make a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on my system. I have 9.10 correctly setup on what I see here as devsda2. devsda3 does contain /home. devsda1 is for Vista. They are on a 500Gb hard drive. I also have a second 500Gb hard drive, formerly on a raid 0 with the first one, but now independent (raid deactivated from bios). It is here know as /dev/sdb, and contains other 3 partitions. Raid 0 is not hardware, but is an intel fake raid.

I then have other 4 drives, causing me NO problem.

I start live mode of Ubuntu 10.04 with noraid option. When I try to setup Ubuntu, during the process, where it comes to manually select partitions, the two 500Gb hard drives disappears, such that I'm not able to install Ubuntu on what now is /dev/sda2

If I start live mode of Ubuntu without noraid option, I will see the two 500Gb hd as being part of a raid 0, such that I can't use them.

The other 4 hd normally appear in both cases.
