Ubuntu Servers :: 9.10 Server/Raid 10 Setup - HDD - Not Recognizing The Full Capacity Of The Drives
Mar 12, 2010
I have a total of 4 hdd's, 500gb 7.2rpm that I would like mirrored using raid 10. As you can see from the image, ubuntu 9.10 server isn't recognizing the full 2tb's. In fact, I'm not even sure about the configuration as I was thinking the HDD's would come up as four 500gb hdds. Instead I have the configuration above set and ready for Ubuntu to be installed on.
1. Is this typical of a server pre-configured from Dell(perc6 raid controller.
2.Why is ubuntu not recognizing the full capacity of the drives especially when it's a server install?

1 Areca controller 1222 divided into 2x250Gb in RAID 1 for my Ubuntu installationm6x 2Tb in RAID 5 for my data (mounted as logical drive) resulting in 8Tb of available space (also visible in the disk utility of Ubuntu) Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Now the problem; when I check the capacity in the file browser on my mounted data drive, I only see 5,1 Tb of total space.

I've recently completed a fresh install of 10.04 on a home file server and upgraded the hard drives in my storage array. My PREVIOUS hardware was:
Old version of Ubuntu (I forget which one exactly, but I know I had missed a few upgrade cycles)
3X 500 GB Seagate Baracuda's (for the array)
Areca 1220 Hardware RAID controller
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600
320 GB Seagate for the boot drive
I was running that hardware for about five years or so and it was rock solid. After the upgrade the hardware specs are:
Ubuntu 10.04
Areca 1220 hardware RAID controller
4x 1000GB Samsung
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600
320 GB Seagate for the boot drive.
The fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 went remarkably well. The drivers for that raid controller are in the kernel, which is great. I was able to access the old array after upgrading Ubuntu. Now I am trying to create a new array with the four 1000 GB drives in a RAID 5. Obviously that gives a maximum storage capacity of 3 TB, greater than the 2 TB threshold that seems to be so important. I've been doing some digging and here is where my questions start:
it appears as though gparted doesn't support file partitions greater than 2 TB, correct?
it also doesn't seem as though parted supports ext3 or ext4, is that correct?
If this is the case, how do I create a partition with ext4 that is greater than 2 TB?
I can see the array volume in gparted (which is a relief) but it lists the size as 2.73 TiB, which I find curious because that is over 2 TB, but not the full capacity of the volume. I can also get to the volume in parted. But I see in the parted documentation that using the makepartfs command is discouraged and instead, one should use the command mkpart to create an empty partition, and then use external tools like mke2fs ( to create the filesystem.
how to proceed from here. What does the community think is the best course of action to create a partition of 3TB in ext4? Then I need to change fdisk to automatically mount the array at every log in, right?

This is a strange problem. I have Ubuntu server installed on a proper server hardware. My RAID card reports all four HDDs to ubuntu as single drives, which is how i set it up because Ubuntu does not recognize the raid card on the server. Now you might say if thats the case, why dont i remove the raid card and have the BIOS report to ubuntu as four single drives then i can perhaps setup software raid. Well my board has only one sata port.Ubuntu is all setup. on the first drive and i have set the other three up using software RAID.
System works great only problem is it freezes sometimes. Not everytime, just on the odd occassion I use the same Hardware without the raid card and of course just one HDD and it great. No freezes. That leads me to believe its the RAID card.My question is why will it run great for days and sometimes just freeze on me? Probably silly but if theres an issue with the RAID card, it should not work at all, should it?

We do server backups to USB HDD's. Neither of our known good backup drives are being recognized by our 10.04 server, fully updated. Additionally, I plugged in my SanDisk 4GB USB mem stick, and it is not recognized either. I am used to seeing the kernel do some PnP messages in either /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog and I am not seeing any blips there what so ever of the USB drives being plugged in. Did something happen to USB PnP with some latest update? USB HDD's were being recognized recently, like six weeks ago...

I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.

I am rebuilding two microsystems servers and I need some advice to make my dreams come true.I want to setup the servers in a RAID configuration and want to install a GUI Linux application to manage a file server, manage a subnet, and host a Moodle on my subnet.I am planning to use Asus eee netbooks running Linux as my client computers. I basically need to be able to get my kids on the web and be able to have them use some open source office suite tools. No major crunching. I'll have two Macs for that.

I have had no problem installing Fedora OS on any of my Dell servers prior to this post. Anyway, I wouldn't call this a problem but recently, we bought another DELL server with Quad Core, 4GB, etc... AND this model has 2 swappable SAS Harddrives.
I wouldn't call myself an expert but then again I am not a newbie too. However, I have never setup any RAID before and now I am forced to setup RAID1 on this server. So, in a way, I am a newbie in setting up RAID
Would someone please point me in the right direction as I have no idea what I am supposed to do to setup the RAID. FYI, I will be installing Fedora 10 64bit on this server. I would appreciate if you can start from the very beginning, ie. partitioning, formatting the harddrives during OS installation, etc..

I've finally found a couple of useful tutorials on setting up RAID in Linux. However, because this is new ground to me, I have a couple of basic questions which I think the tutorial writers gloss over because of their familiarity with the process. My questions are these:
1. Most tutorials speak about setting up only one partition on clean drives. Can I set up more than one (e.g. / and home) to be mirrored as two partitions?
2. When starting with two identical clean drives, do I need to set up my partitions identically on both drives or is it only the partitions that I want mirrored to the second drive?

I have installed ubuntu server LTS 10.4 on a HP MediasmartServer. It has four disks. On the first one I have the original HPFS/NTFFS partition (left untouched), a Linux ext4 partition for / a Linux SWAP partition and the rest of this first disk (sda) is part of a RAID 5 with the three other disks.I now have this first ext4 partion shown as full. Is there an easy way to give it more space without loosing the whole setup?I have 2TB of data on this server and everything is so fine.

I have two drive on my Ubuntu server. I have a 40GB IDE 5400RPM and an 80GB SATA 7200RPM.
Is it at all possible to RAID 0 the two of these drive? I know it's pretty unorthodox, but it's what I've got without having to buy anything.
If so, what are the limits, cons, and/or potential pros of doing a RAID of these two?

I have been battering with FC10 and software RAID for a while now, and hopefully I will have a full working system soon. Basically, I tried using the F10 live CD to setup Software RAID 1 between 1 hard drives for redundancy (I know its not hardware raid but budget is tight) with the following table;
[Code]....
I set these up by using the RAID button on the partition section of the install except swap, which I set-up using the New partition button, created 1 swap partition on each hard drive that didn't take part in RAID. Almost every time I tried to do this install, it halted due to an error with one of the raid partitions and exited the installer. I actually managed it once, in about...ooo 10-15 times of trying but I broke it. After getting very frustrated I decided to build it using just 3 partitions
[Code]....
I left the rest un-touched. This worked fine after completing the install and setting up grub, reboot in to the install. I then installed gparted and cut the drive up further to finish my table on both hard drives. I then used mdadm --create...etc to create my RAID partitions. So I now have

I just went out and bought stuff to build a new computer, and among the parts was a Gigabyte ga-890fxa-ud5 motherboard ([URL]). The board has 3 (well, 4, but we'll stick to the 3) main sata interfaces, with 2 slots per interface, allowing 6 sata drives. In slot_0 i put my blu-ray drive, in slot_1 i put my drive that will host the OS and its partitions, and that is in the sata connector pair on the left. The middle sata connector pair (slot_2 and slot_3) i have 2 2tb drives, and in the sata connector pair on the right (slot_4 and slot_5) i have 2 1.5tb drives.

I'm looking for advise on which drives to add into my server for software raid 5. I would like to use 2TB drives for the array. The server currently boots off a RAID 1 array and I have a couple other drives mounted until I build a RAID 5 array with new drives. I've read horror stories on using Western Digital WD20EARS and Seagate ST32000542AS. So I'm wondering which large drives are best to use in software raid?

I am trying to use 3 3TB Western Digital drives in a raid 5 software array. The trouble seems to be that the array is created with only 1.5 TB of capacity, rather then the expected 6 TB.
Here are the commands and output:
$ sudo dmraid -f isw -C BackupFull6 --type 5 --disk /dev/sde,/dev/sdf,/dev/sdg --size=5589G
Create a RAID set with ISW metadata format
RAID name: BackupFull6
RAID type: RAID5
RAID size: 5589G (11720982528 blocks)
RAID strip: 64k (128 blocks)
DISKS: /dev/sde, /dev/sdf, /dev/sdg
About to create a RAID set with the above settings. Continue ? [y/n] :y
$ sudo dmraid -s
*** Group superset isw_cdjhcaegij
--> Subset
name: isw_cdjhcaegij_BackupFull6
size : 3131048448
stride : 128
type : raid5_la
status : ok
subsets: 0
devs : 3
spares : 0
So I cannot understand why the size of the created array is only 3131048448 or about 1.5 TB. The first command seemed to imply it was going to create an array with 5589GB.
System is:
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS
Release: 10.04
Codename: lucid

I have a single PC that has two hard disks in it. One is 250GB running Debian linux; the other 1TB running windows. I was switching between the two by going to the BIOS and changing the order of the hard disks to boot from. Both lived happily together in peaceful co-existance. Until....
Lately, I haven't been using Linux, so I decided to convert the 250GB to windows. So I put in the windows install CD, and it all started working fine, but when it came down to setting up a partition, Windows only recognized 130GB (out of the 250GB). I got confused so I decided to re-install linux. Linux recognizes the full 250GB; it recognized that there is a second hard disk running a different OS so the grub gave the option to boot from windows. So after a couple of reboots from both drives I decided to go ahead and install windows on the 250GB. Well again, windows only recognized 130GB, but this time, windows showed me another hard disk again with 130GB capacity. Apparently I stupid enough to proceed so now both hard disks - the 250GB and the 1TB - have capacity of 130GB each. And this is where I'm stuck.
I have tried fdisk, I have tried debug, but for some reason, windows can only recognize 130GB out of the entire disks; linux on the other hand recognizes the full capacity. I also used the seagate disk diagnostic tool (seatools for MS DOS) and it found no errors on either hard disk.
How can I reclaim the full capacity under windows?

I'm setting up a web server but I have no experience with RAID. I would like to try this configuration if possible:
2 x HDD 500GB RAID1
1 x HDD 20GB (logs and tmp)
The old 20GB drive I would like to use it to store logs and temporally files (mounted in /var/log and /tmp respectively). With this I'm trying to reduce some disk usage in the RAID drives. In my idea, it would be better to write the access/error logs of the web server in a separated drive to the one serving the files which may increase speed... sounds crazy?
One problem is that during the installation, If I set the RAID automatically it will try to use my 20GB HDD as well in the RAID... Does it will work if I set the RAID first (removing the 20GB HDD) and then set the mount points in it after the installation?

I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 on dual boot mode with Windows 7, I had to migrate from windows 7 to XP & again to windows 7. Each time after installation I updated grub. Last time while updating Grub PC went Down due to power failure. I update grub after the supply was resumed and it was successful.
On login I am facing a weird problem, My windows Drive are not appearing in Ubuntu. To access the drives I have to Plug a Pen Drive and access them first from an Application otherwise the don't even appear in Places drop-down list. If I don't plug Pen Drive they don't appear in Applications.
The other problem is that Disk utility shows space unallocated, allocated & Free above the physical capacity of Hard disk. My Hard disk is of 160 GB, Disk utility Shows Unallocated Space 18446744 TB. The Default Partitions made by me are 26GB, 14GB & others of 40 GB each.

I have the current disk setup :
disk1 :
Code:
sda:
(primary) sda1 ntfs
(primary) sda2 ext3 (mounted as / )[code]....
Before i set up the raid, but with this exact partitioning, the system booted perfectly. When i installed mdadm and created the raid1 mirroring on sda6 and sdb1, the init got screwed up, and all i get is a shell on initramfs, from where i can inspect that sda is binded on md, and cat /proc/mdstat tells me that i have an inactive sda[4].I can't mount the root partition (sda2), because it's busy (i suspect dmraid to lock it), which is, i guess, why init cannot be found.
I wonder if my error is to setup a raid array using a logical partition contained in an extended partition (but i hardly see why it would not work - but the sda bind and the sda[4] in mdstat seems to tell me that it does not), or it's just the initrd that is improperly configured. The other things that bothers me, is that changing the partition type of the raid partitions (fd to 0 - Empty), to disable raid autodetection, resulted in the same behavior on boot. Which might lead me again to think about configuration file problem instead of improper setup. The live cd doesn't not seem to recognize raid, so i can't inspect problems any further, but i could inspect system configuration, but i don't really know where to start.

i installed ubuntu server on a 4-hard disk system, i installed with the RAID 10 support that comes with 10.04 server optioon. my raid swap is /dev/md0 and my raid data partition is /dev/md1
hard drives are /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd
the instalation goes fine, from the 8TB im getting 4TB mirrored which is what i want,
but the instalation setup goes up to the point where it asks me to install grub boot loader, There i choose the default option and it does a fatal error.
my main goal is just to make it bootable, any method is welcome. this went beyond my RAID knowledge (more conceptual than technical)

I'm looking to set up a bit of a home server, and am wondering about storage. What I'd like is something like RAID 6, which has good redundancy built-in, but with this being a home server, I'd prefer to start a little smaller and leave room to build it up in future. I'd been looking at commercial products like the 'drobo', which seems fairly ideal, but I'd really like to see if I can do it myself. I understand that throwing the RAID into an LVM will allow for some expansion, but the last time I checked, most RAID setups called for the same sized disks, or at least limited the array by the size of the smallest disk present.
What I'd like is the ability to build a basic framework with a few cheap disks, and then as things start filling up, to be able to add larger ones (perhaps eventually pulling out smaller ones as though they'd failed and replacing them with big ones)
