CentOS 5 Server :: Application Is Getting New Port Every Time Start
Jun 23, 2010
I have written simple application in cpp which listens on port 8080. But when I start the application and check the port it is listening on (using netstat -nap), I can see that the application is listening on port which is > 30000.
This port number keeps on changing if I re-run the application. Please let us know if I have to do any kind of a seeting so that application starts listening on 8080 port.I am using CentOS 5.5 (I tried same on CentOs 5.2)

so i set out to change the default smtp port the server uses because my ISP blocks port 25 and i need the email to work in outlook. this morning i could receive email, but not send it. so i did some research and thought that i needed to edit the master.cf file in /etc/postfix/ by commenting out this line: smtp inet n - n - - smtpd -oand replace it with587 inet n - n - - smtpd (587 being the port i want to use)somewhere along the lines postfix server stopped running and now i cannot get it to start.if i try using SSH it crashes immediately and if i restart it in simple control panel nothing happens
I am a network/system Administrator in an avg. based company, we are using Cent Os as servers. We are developing applications in both php & java, for java we are using apache tomcat as server (port number 8080) & for php we are using apache as server (port 80). Php applications are uploaded in the server and giving the link to our clients like localhost.com/chrome. Now we are planning to give the java based application for testing purpose to clients & can give the application link to client as localhost.com:8080/mozilla. Is it is possible to change the link localhost.com:8080/mozilla to localhost.com/mozilla with out changing the portnumber of apache tomcat server & without interrupting the php applications, that means our clients can access php application as localhost.com/chrome & java application as localhost.com/mozilla in the same server at the same time.
I am hosting two Virtual Servers both running Centos 5.3 on a host machine also running the same OS. The VM software in use is Xen, as supplied with the OS.The host machine's time and date is fine, however both Virtual Servers are running ahead of real time consitantly.Running /etc/init.d/ntpd restart will resolve the issue however one of these is running MailScanner and when the time suddenly goes backwards, sometimes by as much as an hour, it stops working properly.
I am writing one simple server daemon and running with /etc/init.d/server its running properly but when i want to run one simple QT GUI with system() function , its not able to run it and returning 256 as return code .
If same daemon i m running from terminal then its working properly and also system() function is getting success with return value 0 and GUI is getting popped up.

and it starts successfully and the CMS can use it. To start OO at boot time, I wrote a script called 'openofficeserver' and saved it to /etc/init.d. It looks as follows
I've been trying to make a cgi script that starts a program on a server and then shows the program on the servers screen. The cgi script is written in perl. I've been successful in making the program showing up on the screen through ssh by setting $DISPLAY to :0.0, I tried setting it to this in /etc/profile but when the cgi script ran nothing showed up on the screen. I tried having the script running it as a local user with "su - [user] -c [command]", this didn't help either.
In short what I'm trying to accomplish. When I press a button on a web page an slide show is supposed to start on a screen connected to the server.
i am not able to port 8080 on my CentOS VPS server.I have followed all the instuctions as mentioned on iptables wiki page. Also I am able to telnet my ip address and port number, But can not access from browser.
I'm configuring a new Centos 5.5 server in replacement of an old W2K server. The topology of our network is simple : one file/dhcp/dns relay server and workstations (PC's and some MAC's) plus network printers and scanners. All the workstations have dynamic IP addresses (easier because a lot of 'dynamic' changes : new persons with their own laptop, ...) and the server and printers/scanners have fixed IP addresses.I edited the dhcpd.conf (see here underneath), I have the file dhcpd.leases but it doesn't start !
I need to start an application (graphical) when the PC start, even before anybody login, and use/launch a specific user. Now only can do this manually; when gdm starts, switch to any text tty [ie. Ctrl + Alt + F1], then I login into the special user, start a X server, export the DISPLAY environment variable, and start the application.
With this steps: Code: $X :1 -verbose -nr -nolisten tcp & # Maybe Metacity -> $ metacity $export DISPLAY=:1 $JavaApp & Now i need put this steps (script) in some place to launch the app automatically, and with and specific user [ie. manager].
How can I made it? Maybe in init.d? or an special xinitrc? And how can start the app with the specific user? And, if is possible, who can stop the app when the system going turn off? I have Debian 5.0 and a beginner knowledge of shell script.
I am currently running debian lenny on an old mini ITX box (1GHZ 1GB ram OS on a 16GB CF card, 4 X 1TB sata drives) as a file server on my home network. I have modified /etc/inittab to auto log in a standard user, start X and start fluxbox. I would like the system to then start a couple of VM's using virtual Box but as this is not a high spec box I would like to start these automatically at 5 min intervals and about 5 min after the auto log in.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can achieve this or alternativley monitor the processor load and start each VM in sequence as the porcessor load drops below 20%.
i am currently trying to install vsFTP onto my new linux server and btw i just started using linux today this is my first time using linux so i got the ftp installed good it got downloaded and everything then i went to open a port for my server for vsFTP i used this comand to open it "-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT" then i closed it by pressing ESC then :wq! and it brought me back to my comand line again so now when i try to start the ip table thing with the comand "service iptables start" then when i execute that comand putty respondes with this "Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 1 failed [FAILED]"
I want to change my ssh port from the default 22 to something else. I did the following: vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config; uncommented Port 22 and changed it to the desired port number. After that I run service sshd restart for the change to take an effect. Now, when I want to login into the new port I receive this message - Network error:Unable to route to host. When I change the port back to 22, I will be able to login again.
I use VPS because when i was on share hosting. My website was hacked by hacker. Now i'm using VPS. I want to ask how to update webserver application such as Mysql, phpMyAdmin, lighttpd I use centOS 5 i386 and i use Kloxo Panel. I was already installed Mybb.
In a little over my head here but eager to learn. Running Fedora 10 on an IBM T41. Trying to set up a local server so that I can run PHP and test webpages locally (I'm a client-side web designer). Went through the SendDerek tutorial and everything went great until I tried to check the port with canyouseeme.org. I get "Connection timed out" every time.
- The httpd service is started via the terminal. - Port 80 is unblocked via "Firewall Configuration." - I set up port forwarding on my router.
What am I missing? I just want to be able to have the local computer run my PHP scripts instead of having to upload them to a remote server every time I make a change.
I have a CentOS server running at [a link which has been moderator deleted] (a text-based game I'm building) which is displaying the default welcome page. I'll quote some of the things that page says:
Quote: "Apache 2 Test Page powered by CentOS This page is used to test the proper operation of the Apache HTTP server after it has been installed. If you can read this page it means that the Apache HTTP server installed at this site is working properly."
"If you are the website administrator: You may now add content to the directory /var/www/html/. Note that until you do so, people visiting your website will see this page and not your content. To prevent this page from ever being used, follow the instructions in the file /etc/httpd/conf.d/welcome.conf. You are free to use the images below on Apache and CentOS Linux powered HTTP servers.
My host is blocking port 3960 which I need to use for an SVN server, they are telling me that I will have to install my own firewall. I've not done this before and am not sure of what to do or whether anything I can install will be enough protection.
I have a mail server i need it to send message via port 587 not port 25, i make some changes to my postfix server which i use and it is already successed making a telnet to 587 port like it :
i need to change ssh port on the servers including centos and ubuntu when i make changes to /etc/ssh/sshd.config and change the port to something else restart sshd then i can determine that port 22 is not working but ssh does not connect to new port it says "no route to the host"
I have a fresh installation of CentOS 5 I'm using for a server, and I'm having issues with port configuration. I have iptables running, and it started with no /etc/sysconfig/iptables file. I added a few basic rules (port 53, port 10000 for webmin), saved the file, and restarted the service. I tried connecting to webmin, scanned ports, and traffic was blocked. I set iptables to allow all traffic and restarted the service, and it still showed basically every port as being blocked. It seems port 80 and port 22 work for some reason, even when I tell iptables to block all ports.
I'm not sure what's going on here. Iptables is reading the /etc/sysconfig/iptables file, and if I use lynx localhost:someport it responds as it should according to the file. However, if I try connecting by IP, it's like there's some other firewall or something running that does whatever it's configured to do.....
