Ubuntu :: Removing An Icon From The Panel?
Apr 14, 2011earlier today I was at my computer, and the update manager popped up. I installed the updates, and closed the manager. Now I have this pesky icon on my panel in the notification area that I simply cannot get rid of.It's a link to the update manager. How can I remove it?

Also I cant move some launchers in unity-tomboy note will move but it always goes back to where it was and bin and workspace switcher wont move at all.

May 18, 2011We have a centos 5 instance running as a virtual machine on vsphere 4.0, which has a number of virtual disks presented to it. We need to remove these virtual disks from the system without rebooting it, but have had no luck searching VMware's KB or the internet for solutions to the issue. It seems we can strip the disk of all it's partition information, then remove it from the system in VMware, but /var/log/messages still reports scsi errors when running fdisk against the said disk. There is also a folder with the deleted disk's name (e.g. /sys/block/sdp), after the disk has been removed and the host bus has been rescanned. Is it even possible to completely remove disks from linux without a reboot?

I am a bit confused. The Installed Groups represent what is installed? If so, how do I remove items like DNS Name Server, Dialup Networking Support, etc. Also, what is the easiest way to remove or view these items with and without a gui?

But to be frank, i don't have any source to take the backup of my data. So, can i install only CentOS by removing SUSE without any data lose. Any procedure? May 31, 2011I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

Feb 27, 2011what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
Fedora :: Removing Notifications And Safely Removing Drives?
Aug 25, 2010These should be my last pleas for help with regard to Fedora 13. I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

Feb 5, 2010A couple of months ago I (naively) installed Python 2.6.2 to my system without using an RPM. Then recently I tried to run the Display panel (/usr/bin/system-config-display) and it never opened.I then used it from the command line and after realizing it was a Python problem I spent some time trying to eliminate the python conflict by removing 2.6 and reinstalling all the python related RPMs from URL..Searching online one of the things I have found is to recompile python with UCS4 support though that seems to go against the idea of using an rpm as I understand it and I would assume it has been compiled as needed for CentOS.

CentOS 5 :: Flashing KDE Applications In Windows List Of Gnome Panel?
May 1, 2009I am running CentOS 5.3, Gnome Panel 2.16.1. It seems some KDE applications just flash crazily in the windows list (task bar in Gnome panel). Usually when a new event happens to a window, it flashes to remind the user (I hate this *feature* anyway, but can't disable it...) But this time, when I switch from another workspace to the workspace that has (more than one) KDE applications (like kile and kdvi), they just simply start to flash, and the flashing window list appears on every workspace unless you click it.
I tried to disable the animation from gconf-editor, without success. Does anyone have similar issues? It is really annoying..

Having just got Revelation 0.4.11 working on the laptop, I notice that the panel applet, 'Revelation Account Search' is not available, whereas it is still listed on the DT.
Firstly, why would this be and secondly, is it possible to copy this across because I find it really useful?

Mar 4, 2011I have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. When clicked on, it now appears in the middle of the screen (sometimes even higher depending on resolution). This never happened prior to Maverick Meerkat.
How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

May 17, 2011So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

Dec 4, 2010Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

Mar 23, 2010I'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:
HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050
When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.
I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.
Ubuntu :: Starting Empathy From Panel Freezes Panel?
Sep 25, 2010So I take a glance at the time, and realize the clock has been showing the same hour for ages.Basically, if I use the gnome-panel menu for launching empathy the panel freezes. The workaround that I use is switching off showing seconds and switching it on again on the date format menu of the panel. (I never used seconds on the date format, but that way you realize the panel is frozen)I've seen this behaviour in two diferent computers I use, any hint on what may cause this? Every applet keeps working as usual, but the menu display is frozen.I'm on 10.04, using version 2.30.2 of gnome. Steps to reproduce: click on the envelope icon of the menu and launch xat. It only happens the first time (when empathy is loaded) and it gets solved if you start empathy through sessions or whatever (The problem with the sessions workaround is that I can't manage to make it started without focus).
