CentOS 5 Hardware :: USB Keyboard Continually Getting Stuck Keys (but Only In CentOS)?
Jan 25, 2010
I just took delivery of a new computer, with CentOS 5 installed. It does not have a PS/2 keyboard socket, only USB. I get lots of strange "key stuck" problems - usually the shift key or the cursor keys (I guess I use them the most). Or sometimes key presses do not register. It makes it very difficult to use the machine.I have tried two keyboards (both of which work fine on other machines, or on this machine when booted with a live CD). The machine is an Intel i7. Are there any known problems with USB keyboard drivers in CentOS?

I tried to find the information by myself (google search, forum search, Faq, manual...) but i didn't find any clue. I installed CentOs 5.5 on a macbook model 1,1 and I have currently two issues :
The keyboard mapping is wrong (it didn't fit with the macbook keyboard, ex: the '-' is not on touch '6' for example...). Is there a way to apply macbook keyboard mapping? I didn't find how to modify the brightness of the screen. Where is this settings? It didn't appear in the video card settings that is very basic. Do I need to install a proprietary driver for my GMA on my macbook? Also, i will like to have this settings on the keyboard with the dedicated button (like for the sound that works well).

I am familiar with linux and have done some managing of servers before. I just tried to install centos 5.5 on a server, but after booting the screen was blank and my monitor said vga mode not supported. I found online to press ctrl+alt+F1, which allows me to see the rest of the boot commands. Then after I was able to see the boot commands it says enabling /etc/fstab swap, but never says ok or gets past that part.

I am having a problem during a fresh install of CentOS 5.3 on an IBM Intellistation Z Pro 6221. I have tested the installation media (CDs). The install runs normally until I am asked to specify the appropriate keyboard.I take the default (English) and hit next. The keyboard and mouse keys become unresponsive though the mouse pointer moves. I can go no further than this. This behavior is the same whether I install in text mode or graphic mode. I have tried the noprobe installation option without success. The box I am doing the install on dual boots fine between Windows XP and CentOS 4.7 currently.Does anyone have an idea of what the problem may be?

When I use the down arrow on my new keyboard it also does and enter key as well. When I use the left and right arrow keys and hold them it doesn't keep going. It just clicks once and I have to pressing it over and over again. Any one know the correct settings to setup my keyboard? It's a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard.

I've found a number of other entries about this, but they don't apply (the config files mentioned do not exist or whatever). My RHEL 4.x systems work differently, so the solutions I used there don't help either. In the course of some fussing around trying to get Virtual Box OSE to load, I apparently stomped on something so that when I log in now, I get the twm window manager--I was perfectly willing to have Gnome or whatever, but twm is a bit too light-weight for what I need.Anyone know where the magic config file or whatever lives in RHEL/CentOS 5.x?

I created a new Ubuntu 9.10 VM, and it installed fine. I then told it to upgrade, and was running it fullscreen and left it for several hours. Now the machine is stuck at full-screen, and Ctrl+Alt do not unstick it! I can see the mouse cursor, but cannot press Alt to bring up a menu or anything. I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a console, and logged in as root and tried to kill-9 the process, (qemu-dm), but it won't die! Any ideas on how I can unstick the VM? I have lots of applications running and transferring data now, so I don't want to reboot the box for several days until the file transfers are done.

I'm running Centos 2.6.18-53.1.13.el5 in a VM. Currently I'm studying for my RHCT.I'm trying to enable IP forwarding so I edited this line in the /etc/sysctl.conf:

I managed to install Centos x86 for the first time, together with VncServer, SSH access, mySQL and Apache. Everything worked greater until I logged in remotely to the server from my Windows 7 machine using RealVnc. I manage to connect successfully and able to use the GUI remotely. However, when I press logout from the menu, the screen gets stuck on the funky blue and white curly background. It does not close automatically.
If I close it using the 'X' button and reconnect, I get in to same stuck screen. My only workaround is to login with Putty and type 'service vncserver restart'. Then I am able to connect again. But same thing happens when I do a logout.

I am using CentOS 5.2 with GRUB booting a software RAID configuration. The first disk is md0 and is mirrored across sda1 and sdb1.I manually re-installed grub using grub-install and the machine will no longer boot off of the HD. The grub menu comes up, I can select my kernel the machine then jumps to loading the initrd and hangs. It will go no further. I have a live DVD that can boot from the HD. If I use that to first boot from the DVD, then specifiy the HD, it shows the same grub menu and then the machine boots fine w/o the initrd hang.I have tried re-installing grub but not been able to get the machine to work again w/o the DVD.

I'm developing a simple TCP server. 99% of incoming connections terminate correctly and the sockets disappear from netstat outputHowever, a few connections hang around for indefinitely in the FIN_WAIT2 state. Now, I know that the clients in this case are misbehaving by not sending a FIN,ACK to close the connection. However, regardless of client behaviour, the connections should only remain in this state for a maximum of 60 seconds (set globally by /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout)

I've installed CentOS 5.5 on my Acer Aspire One D150. It uses the Intel integrated graphics chip GM945 which isn't supported "out of the box" by CentOS. My screen resolution has defaulted to 800x600, but it should be 1024x600. tried xrandr, and editing the xorg.conf file, and now have gone down the rabbit hole of trying to install xf86-video-intel and its associated dependencies (nested like Russian matryoshka dolls). I'm at the point of trying to install xorg-server, but am getting hung up by its dependencies on xproto and fontsproto, despite having installed them.

I'm trying to install CentOS 5.3 on a VMWare virtual machine running VMWareServe 1.0.4 build-56528. I have 8 virtual machines that are running some older kernel (RH FedoraCore 4) without any trouble. My system has an AMD Athlon XP 1800 processor and has 1G RAM. Every time during the installation after choosing skip media (I have already checked that the media is OK) I get a kernel OOPS and the capslock and scroll lock keys start blinking. My first guess was that this could be a ACPI issue, so I have disabled ACPI using the acpi=no boot option. The problem persists with the acpi=no option set. During the boot install process, I have seen some messages like this one
ACPI Exception (processor_core-xxxx): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [xxxxxxxxx]
I have searched for this issue and found a RedHat Bug 435653 that reports this same issue, but this report is somewhat old, so i think that this issue as already been fixed and reflected to upstream. I have tried also to install using the text mode installation, but the same problem. To further isolate this problem, i have avoided the hardware detection and this was the first time that i have overcome the first screen (test media screen), as i have choosen with the success the language and the keybord layout. After choosing the beyboard layout, the kernel OOPS shows up again. On the screen 4 (debug screen) I don't see any relevant messages.

I recently install CentOS 5.5 on my small server. Unfortunately, I have problems with my mail configuration. I don't know anything about sendmail and dns configuration so I am just looking for something easy to set up. I use cron to perform automatic task. I set up the variable $MAILTO in cron to my regular mail. Cron send the mail but it is stuck in the queue.

This is a standard install, just like I've done dozens of times before.
Plain vanilla, just installed.
When I boot, I get to the splash screen and it doesn't go into the default selection.
Could this be a Hardware thingy? The reason I ask is because I've had this issue happening with 5.2 on the same machine. I just formatted it completely and installed a fresh 5.3 i386 on it and I get the same behavior.
[root@server ~]# cat /boot/grub/grub.conf
# grub.conf generated by anaconda

Just installed CentOS 5.4, had no problems until the first time it tried to login, where the keyboard didn't work. There are bugs logged on both the CentOS site, and the Red Hat site, but nobody seems to have a definitive solution (other than buy a USB keyboard). Bearing in mind that the machine in question is not hooked up to a network (i.e. no internet updates), is there a way to resolve this issue?

I've just installed CentOS-5.4 on an AMD64 box, dual boot with Windows 7 64, if that matters. At first I could not get the GUI to display at all, but fixed that using system-config-display. During installation, the keyboard (HP bluetooth set with mouse) worked fine in the GUI, but mouse did not. Now when it loads the GUI interface after booting, neither the keyboard or the mouse will work at all, therefore I can't navigate anywhere. I have done the yum update already as well, from init 3, but they still are not working. what I should do next, where to check?

Keyboard Hanging, in CentOS. Some time when I login to Linux or when we come back to use Keyboard after a long time work with mouse, my keyboard will hang for few seconds. I don't know its my USB keyboard problem or another issue. I doubt it started after I install opera browser in CentOS or by VNC setup.

Ive got a ClearCube Blade server installed with a mirrored clone of a Centos 5.4 system. Running X with GNOME. Upon starting the new blade, i find that I am having issues with the keyboard and mouse. When I plug in USB mouse and keyboard directly into the blade they work fine. When I hook the use mouse and board to the cport kvm, I don't even get any power to the devices. If I plug in ps2 mouse and board through the kvm, I get power and can use them in the bios but once Centos starts to load, they go dead. I have changed the kvm 3 times with new kvms, and I spoke with the manufacturer there are no incompatibilities with the hp mouse or keyboard or any reason why the usb ports wouldn't be working on the kvm for the devices.

Problems with xen 3.1.2 creating and installing domU CentOS 5.5 I am trying to do a virt-install --prompt --paravirt, and the install error out while trying to download install RPMs. I have googled for xen centos virt-install and various permutations. I have found similar howtos for 5.4 and 5.3, but they resulted in the same outcome. I did find several posts with similar issues, but no solution was posted.[URL]..
