CentOS 5 Hardware :: Nvidia Card Not Working After RAM Upgrade From 2GB To 4GB?

May 16, 2009

I have a Linux box with a Biostar TA690G Mobo and a Nvidia 9600GSO graphics card. Everything was working fine until I tried to boost the RAM from 2 to 4 Gb. With the 4b RAM the Nvidia card stopped working. There is only a blank screen. If I remove the additional 2Gb everything goes back to normal.

Fedora Hardware :: F12 Upgrade - NVidia Card - Dual Monitors - Only One Monitor

Nov 26, 2009

I used preupgrade to upgrade from F11 to F12. In F11, I used the proprietary nVidia drivers from rpmfusion, and they worked well. I have refrained from installing the nVidia drivers in F12, because of the problems reported for users of KDE. I removed my old xorg.conf, which has references to the nVidia driver and to "TwinView," the proprietary method of managing two screens, so as to let X discover both monitors.

Now, however, my second monitor stays black, even though xrandr and KDE RandR show both monitors correctly. Xorg.0.log shows the nouveau driver is loaded. (I also tried to create a new xorg.conf following guidelines from the web, but many of the guidelines are from before xrandr, and I'm not confident I have it right yet.) It seems that X believes I have two monitors, because I can drag a window off into the blackness (and it's never heard from again!) I know that the hardware is working, because I just booted into Windows 7, and I could see the desktop on both windows.

How do I convince X and KDE to display on both monitors?

Debian Hardware :: X Not Working On PowerMac G5 With NVidia Card

Sep 8, 2011

I have recently tried to install Debian 6 on a PowerMac G5 that we had lying around. The system installs fine and will boot to a command line, but when the installation was complete and X tried to start (using the default configuration--which I believe specified the 'nouveau' driver) the screen went completely blank and no amount of button-pushing could get me back to even a tty. I did here the standard noise that gdm3 makes when the login window is ready, so this is solely a display issue. Plus, [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[F1] followed by [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Delete] did reboot cleanly so the system didn't hang. I booted from the CD into recovery mode and switched the default X driver to vesa (I had to install it), which, I understand, is supposed to work for everyone. However, nothing worked! I did get one step better: the vesa driver brought me back to the terminal when it crashed, instead of the nouveau's bad habit of stopping the display from working completely. I haven't got the full log files because it would be a pain to mail them to a computer with a working web browser (although I will if needed), but I did see the following messages in the output:

(II) VESA(0): initializing int10

( followed by a backtrace )

Bus error at address 0xf79fd000

Fatal server error: Caught signal 7 (Bus error). Server aborting

Ubuntu Installation :: Get NVidia Video Card Working In Linuxmint?

Jan 8, 2010

I just bought a new pc. It has plenty of hard drive space and ram with a 2.6GHz processor. I'm trying to run a dual-boot with Windows 7 and Linuxmint. I need some help as to how I go about installing my video driver. I have tried combinations of the following: -clicking on the taskbar icon that says "restricted drivers are available" and enabling the drivers -going to Software Manager/Drivers and choosing to install "NVidia 3D Drivers"

My efforts so far have only resulted in the following behavior: The screen changes from color into black-and-white and becomes unresponsive except to close it out The screen freezes up completely forcing me open up a terminal to kill the offending process (which turns out to be firefox)

The next thing I would like to try is to just go to the Nvidia website and downloading and installing the driver from there. It's a BIN file with a "run" extension. So I entered the command "chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run" followed by the command "./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run". But I get an error that says the following:

ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before installing. WHAT IS AN X SERVER? HOW DO I CLOSE IT?? I've got nothing unusual open. Maybe a web page. I've tried closing out of everything except the terminal and I still get the same message.

Hardware :: NVidia GeForce 8600GT Graphics Card Not Working Properly

Jan 28, 2010

I have a problem with a new GeForce 8600GT graphics card. I just installed the card into my Dell Optiplex 745. When I boot the PC I have no image until the Ubuntu logon box comes up. No bios info, no boot menu, no grub menu, nothing until the Ubuntu login. Once I get to the logon prompt everything seems fine except when I use CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a console. Then I get nothing but a blank screen. When I press CTRL+ALT+F7 my desktop loads fine and all is OK again. I had a problem trying to get the nVidia drivers installed because I didn't have a usable console. I had to use SSH to install the drivers. I'm using this card with an HP 1755 flat panel that's about 5 years old and a Dell Optiplex 745 with Intel Dual-Core CPU.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Dual Monitor Video Card - NVidia Quadro FX 580?

Nov 24, 2010

I have repeatedly installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit on a Dell T3500 with an nVidia Quadro FX 580, in an attempt to get dual monitor support to work to no avail. Everything works fine when just one monitor is plugged in and I do not try to enable or plug in a second monitor. I have installed the Dell DKMS, and the Dell recommended drivers (from Dell site) on one installation, I installed the nVidia drivers (from nVidia site) on another, and have tried with what CentOS loads by default on another. The results are the same every time: When I reboot as directed I get a black screen. I can recover by hard shutdown and unplugging one of the monitors, but that doesn't solve my problem. Has anyone had a similar experience, or have any helpful guidance? I am not very Linux savvy. This is for multiple machines in a corporate environment.

Information for general problems.

CentOS 5 :: Nvidia Driver Rebuild Necessary After (each) Kernel Upgrade?

Oct 6, 2010

I have an Nvidia graphics card,... actually I manage several workstations that run centos and have an nvidia video card. I also have a personal computer with ubuntu and an nvidia network card.

I would like to do a regular automatic update of those Centos workstations. (With a pilot group to test and then a full roll-out). Until oktober 2009 no major difference in automatic updating ubuntu and centos (apart from the differences between apt and yum):

After a kernel upgrade, the systems can not boot into it's Xorg gui, because the nvidia driver must be rebuild (=not recompiled, because this is partially object code, the driver is not opensource).

But from ubuntu 9.10 onwards, the kernel update process checks for the presence of propietary drivers like those of nvidia and does a rebuild on the reboot, so that the system can succesfully boot into the xorg GUI (and gdm or kdm) My question is: Are ther any plans for Centos to do the same, this would relief me from some upgrade hassle for the Centos workstations that I manage. Or does anyone know about a (good) automagic workaround?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Realtek 8169SC Network Card Not Working

May 28, 2010

I am not very experienced using Linux but I never had big problems with Ubuntu. Now I am busy writing my PhD thesis and therefore I had to install CentOS to use one lousy program that I could not get to work under Ubuntu. However, it seems to be quite fine and it is working well besides one fact: The network card stopped working. In the beginning it was working fine although the speed was only on the level of 100mbit. The switch and the LED on the card indicated gbit connection, though. I tried to install the driver for the 8168 card which reduced the card to 100mbit (indicated by the LED on the switch and the card).

Ethtool indicated it was gbit capable but I couldn't activate it. After reading more and more I figured I have to use the 8169 driver again and live with the 100mbit. Unfortunately, after uninstalling the old driver and reinstalling the driver 8169 the network isn't working at all anymore. The network-manager displays the card as inactive and when I try to turn it on it complains about the wrong mac address, which I am not able to change to the proper one. I am using CentOS 5.5 with the latest updates.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Old Video Card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT Now Beginning To Fail - Which Way Is Best, ATI Or Nvidia?

May 3, 2010

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. Also run windows Vista64Ultimate on dual boot (rarely).

I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu. On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. The only advantage I can find is lower power consumption with Nvidia and Ubuntu has always preferred Nvidia over ATI, as far as working drivers go.As Far as Ubuntu and Lucid is concerned, which way is best, ATI or Nvidia? Has anything changed with ATI support, that could make theor cards more compatible now and in the future?
