CentOS 5 Hardware :: MacBook Pro + 5.1 + New Motherboard = No External Display

I recently upgraded my MBP motherboard which evidentially has an advanced graphics architecture that employs both the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated and NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT discrete graphics processors. I had no problems powering my external monitor until the MB upgrade. Now I get an xorg.conf conflict where

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Macbook 3,1 late 2007. I have an HP paviilon f1703 external monitor that I would like to use as the main screen to load the full resolution GUI without using the laptop monitor at all. I've done several Google searches and tried several remedies, and I'm either doing them totally wrong (which is very very possible because I'm such a newb), their out of date, or their just not working for me.

I have a seagate SATA hard drive that was running a mythtv distro. It had 3 partitions, EXT3, swap, and XFS. I started having I/O errors on boot and saw error messages on both the EXT3 and the XFS partitions. I also heard some clunking sounds on the drive when it was reading, so I thought hell, the drive is dead.
I have since replaced the drive and everything is back up and running on the replacement drive. I thought hell, the seagate drive is toast, but I just want to verify it with some sort of tool. I have the hard drive in a Vantec NexStar external hard drive case (SATA->USB) and found there was a tool called badblocks. Ran badblocks on it, which ran for 24ish hours and found no bad blocks. I also didn't notice any clunking sounds while it was running.

Is badblocks a proper test to run on external hard drives or was I just wasting my time? Is there any way that I can really test it without removing it and connecting it with SATA to the motherboard?

From some Googling, I've found that you can use Bootcamp to install Linux Macbook.However, I have a Macbook air and do not have sufficient disk space. I was wondering if I could install it on an external drive, and boot it from the Macbook? I think that the problem is the bootloader. But, if I still use Bootcamp to install Ubuntu, it would set up the bootloader, and then I would just install to an external?

I thought it was a driver issue, but after messing around with the ALSA mixer a lot, it turned out that when I enabled headphones(or disabled, honestly not sure) that my headphones worked, and when I took them out the speakers worked. Then when I rebooted for whatever reason, only the speakers(built-in) worked. Really, I'm not sure why this is.
When I got them to work there was a switch for the headphones in the graphical mixer(which is what I used, not the ncurses[?] ALSA thing), but I can't seem to find that anymore. It's not a major issue, it just puts me off watching videos and listening to music because my laptop speakers are really low quality. I'd go out to buy a pair of external speakers, but obviously with the audio jack not working, this could be problematic.
I guess I could buy USB external speakers but then the probability of Slackware having pre-installed audio drivers for a cheap generic brand of speakers is so low it doesn't justify the effort of going and buying some, nor the money that would be spent. Willing to enter any commands/w.e. I'll be on Slackware all the time 'cause I need a Linux system right now.

Today I installed all the updates that were associated with the 2.6.31-17 kernel upgrade on Ubuntu 9.10.It appears the update has broken my stock 17-inch Macbook Pro 5,2 because after restarting my screen is just black. I don't see the ReFit choice menu (I have OS X and Ubuntu installed), and even when I let the machine boot all the way into Mac OS X the screen just remains black. The apple logo on the back of the screen doesn't turn on at all.
I can see the keyboard backlights eventually come on (which is normal when you get to Mac OS X login prompt) - so its almost as if its booting but just wont talk to the display. When you press the brightness buttons you can faintly see the shade of black changing.What the heck has happened? I just paid a big load of money for this baby and I'm very sad now I love Ubuntu but this is ridiculous.

I have a MacBookPro5,1 laptop, and I have installed the 64-bit version of Fedora 12 on it, in addition to the Mac OS X operating system. When I'm running Mac OS X, I can connect my 720p Samsung television to the computer through its mini DVI port and the computer will go into a mode that will display on the television.
However, when I'm running Fedora and connect the television nothing happens. What can be done to allow the laptop to display on the television when it is using Fedora?

Manually mount or fix my external hard drive. I can't format the drive because I have important data on it. The drive is 1TB Select USB 2.0 Desktop Hard Drive from Iomega. When I plug it in, a message appears that reads:
"Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb2,missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so".
Also, I plugged in the drive, typed the command "sudo fdisk -l" in the terminal, and received the following:
WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.

I tried to find the information by myself (google search, forum search, Faq, manual...) but i didn't find any clue. I installed CentOs 5.5 on a macbook model 1,1 and I have currently two issues :
The keyboard mapping is wrong (it didn't fit with the macbook keyboard, ex: the '-' is not on touch '6' for example...). Is there a way to apply macbook keyboard mapping? I didn't find how to modify the brightness of the screen. Where is this settings? It didn't appear in the video card settings that is very basic. Do I need to install a proprietary driver for my GMA on my macbook? Also, i will like to have this settings on the keyboard with the dedicated button (like for the sound that works well).

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Macbook Pro 5,5. Everything is running fine with some tweaks. Just one thing bothers me: when I tell Nvidia X Server Settings that I want to use my external screen as primary screen it doesn't put the gnome panels to the other screen, well... sometimes it does after a couple times but most of the time it doesn't.is there a way to automatically detect when I connect a monitor instead of going to the Nvidia settings? Just the way Mac OS X does?

I did a couple searches for my Chipset and my Motherboard but I didn't get any results, I am building a Router/PBX to replace my current one and CentOS based distros are my distros of choice (Trixbox/PBX in a Flash). My new motherboard is the Jetway NC91-230-LF which has the INTEL 945GC Northbridge and an Intel ICH7 Southbridge. Which I have seen has a few known issues. I have a new setup, computer has only been running a couple days. The sound card is onboard, on a P7P55-M mobo. Kernel version is currently 2.6.18-128. There is no sound at all coming from the speakers.

The OS installed smoothly, however when I got to the desktop and wanted to go on firefox, I didn't realize I had no connection to the internet. Then I found out from the web and through the network configurations that said my NIC's driver is not installed. After many hours of researching, I could see people had similar problems with me and I tried to take those solutions and see if it'll work for me. Unfortunately it did not.

I have a newly installed CentOS 5.4 on Gigabyte G31M-ES2C, I had to change the motherboard since it has some problems. Unfortunately the new motherboard is a rev 2.x board, which has a different onboard NIC (old one is RTL 8102E, new one is AR8132), so now my ethernet connection doesn't work anymore (no eth0 device), I assume I need to install a new driver for the AR8132? I am trying to clone a working Centos 5.4 system onto a new box with a ASUS P5KPL-CM motherboard. I have done so by plugging in a Realtec lan card - but can't get the motherboard lan working. Googling tells me the motherboard has a Atheros L1E lan chip - but I have installed several kmod drivers from ELREPO - but still can't get the on-board lan working. So far I have installed:

kmod-atl1
I have just installed these with yum - but no new hardware appears in the network gui dialogue. Am I missing some step here - or is there another driver I should be looking for.

First time I am having issues with Centos.
I bought a Intel DQ45CB LGA Q45 Micro ATX Motherboard and I am installing the 64 bit version of centos.
The install of Centos goes just fine. However when I first try to boot up, after post is done, I get a blank screen. I do not even get on the Grub screen. No access to any of the ttys. No access to anything, files, folders. I only get a blkinking cursor, no command prompt, nothing.
This happened with Centos 5.2 and 5.3
Just for the hell of it, I installed XEN Xitrix and I have no issues like that.

Big fan of the CentOS and have been using it on my renderfarms and workstations for a long time so naturally it's my linux of choice now that I've finally decided to dual boot my macbook pro. My macbook is the last model before they went with the unibody design so I think it's the 4.1 version (or some such designation). I can run Kubuntu and Fedora's live CDs, and I can get to the Suse installer as well. The problem with CentOS is a mystery to me because its hanging before getting to the installer. The last thing it reports is that it's running the loader and then it sits. I get the same results if I choose the text installer and the only difference the noapic option produces is an extra message that it's "Disabling IRQ #11".

Few months ago I stood on my netbook running F11 and broke the screen. I don't believe there's anything else wrong with it as the lights and fans act as normal when I turn it on. I hooked it up to a monitor but it doesn't automatically display on the external screen. So I have a pretty odd and possibly quite difficult request. Any step-by-step guide of which buttons to press after turning the machine on, in order to get it to switch to the external display? I just need something along the lines of, press enter, tab, type password, enter, press alt-a, down, down, down, enter, tab, etc. Another possible solution, a very long shot, would be a boot disk that defaults to an external screen?

I run Ubuntu on a MacBook Pro with an external monitor connected. But currently the external monitor only works with one user account. The External gets no signal and the laptop display is used on the login page. Is there any way of having the login page and possibly startup displayed on the external at all times for all accounts.

I have been running linux on my thinkpad r50 for about a year, specifically 9.04. The problem is with this new 10.04 lts installation when I go to hook up an external monitor via the avg port and run xrandr to initialize the display, the laptop monitor panel becomes a garbled image and the television that is attached to the computer says no input. As of now I am stumped and open for assistance on this one.

I am putting together a Conky config file by a sort of 'smash and grab' approach borrowing things from various configs I've seen around the web that do stuff I like. I have reached a stumbling block as I want to display my external IP, I have used
