I want to display the image only on the VGA external screen. When I am connecting VGA cable, the image not displaying on the VGA external screen.

- Operating system: Debian 8 64bit
I have tried to connect my GMA500 based Acer 751 to an external dsiplay via VGA connection. I couldn't get the right resolution on the external screen (1920/1080) so I disconnected it and rebooted. Now there is only an "unknown" screen in the display menu. I have rewritten the xorg conf file per instructions for enabling GMA500 but to no avail - conf file looks right but screen is "unknown", low resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio, instead of 16:9. How to restore to laptop monitor - I think I can take from there to enable the right resolution.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am looking for a way to switch quickly and easily between my Laptop Display and my External Monitor, in Windows I had it configured so that when I plugged my Monitor in it would switch to that and when I removed it it would switch back to Laptop Display. From what I have tried it looks like this isn't possible with Linux, but I would like to get to the stage when I can click an icon to switch (or 1 to go to External and 1 to go to Laptop) My Laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series Graphics Card and I have so far noticed the following issues.
1. If I use the Gnome Monitors instead of ATI Catalist Control Centre it seams to cause some strange issues include confusing Linux on what the max screen res supported by my External Monitor is.
2. When I try and enable/Disable either Display or change Resolution, I am told that I have to reboot before the changes take affect.
I don't know if it sounds weird but I've been trying for weeks with no result. I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I looked through the gnome power management settings and when the laptop lid is closed it can only suspend, blank screen, hibernate or shutdown. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Its a brand new Acer aspire 5734Z with a 15,6 inches screen (wich is why I want to plug in my 19 inches monitor and work on bigger screen)

I have an Nvidia Quadro FX 2700M graphics card and have installed the proprietary driver according to SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE. I have tried using sax2 (found out today it is depreciated so will stop that) and running nvidia-xconfig from both init 3 and init 5 followed by nvidia-settings to setup cloning mode.
When I run nvidia-settings, it doesn't detect the laptop display it seems. It says the max resolution is 640x480 even though the max is 1920x1200 and this does get used if I boot the laptop without a monitor attached.
Also, when I try and select cloning nvidia-settings crashes with a segmentation fault.

I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 which I would like to use completely with any Linux OS. I have tried to install Linux Ubuntu 10.04.1 but it appears that it doesn't recognize the external monitor and ends the installation. I have a clean hard drive that I could install but I do not know which of the two drives I should replace. I can only get into windows in safe mode and I would think this may have something to do with the problem, don't no.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI am wondering if it is possible turn off my display with a key of my laptop's keyboard. I mean if I press ctrl + o then my display turn off and then if I press ctrl + o my display turn on.
Background: I am running Debian 8 with the Xfce DE on my Toshiba Satellite Laptop.
When at home I will connect my laptop to an external display. I did the same while I was running Ubuntu; however, with Ubuntu I could activate my laptop display by simply disconnecting the external monitor. With Debian + Xfce, unplugging the external monitor leaves my laptop screen blank.
In order to activate my laptop display, I have to open Display settings, turn on laptop display -- which still leaves my laptop screen blank -- and then switch resolution: there are two listings for 1366x768 under resolution, and only the second one restores my laptop display. Please note that if I have both displays on at the same time the size of the output on my external monitor will be reduced to about the size of my laptop's display.
I would like the create a Bash script which can automatically switch between my displays. After some Googling it seems like xrandr is the tool I need for the job. However, I have been having trouble getting it to work.
I tried the command Code: Select allxrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --primary --output HDMI1 --off. This however just turns my external display off without turning on my laptop's display. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that LVDS1 has two modes at 1366x768; perhaps only one of them can actually display? I'm not sure, but anyways here's the output of xrandr:

I just realized that the second mode is, in fact, 1360x768 rather than 1366x768...
The good news is that I fixed my problem. It turns out that my backlight was not turning on, giving the appearance that my laptop screen was not displaying anything.
I am running Debian 8.3, and I'm running Gnome 3.14.1.I have an external monitor plugged in with HDMI, and while Linux is loading both screens are on duplicate. Once the GUI kicks in, only the external screen works, so I have to enter my password blindly. Then, I open a terminal and run

and the laptop screen turns back on.
I'm wondering: Is there a way to streamline this so that it happens on boot, but after GNOME loads?Or: Is there a better method to solve this?
Today I installed debian-8.1.0-amd64 on my older Samsung Laptop (Model r560). The installation without a desktop environment worked fine and the system booted without any problems into the virtual console. There was however one problem: when I was away from keyboard for some time, the screen turned black and when I came back and hit a button to wake the system up, the laptop immediately restarted. Later I installed the gnome desktop environment. This also worked fine.
But whenever I try to change the screen brightness in the gnome-shell, my system immediately restarts and successive attempts to boot debian fail. Some time later and after countless attempts to boot debian, it finally does boot again. By "debian fails to boot" i mean the following: The initial ram disk is loaded and fschk runs. Usually the system suddenly reboots at this point. SOmetimes, however, the video mode changes, the console font is changed and some services are getting started, but then at some point the system also restarts. I don't reach the point where a login prompt appears, or the graphical environment starts up.
Assuming, it has something to do with buggy acpi implementation of my hardware, I tried the following:
I tried to disable acpi completely by using the kernel parameter "acpi=off". This doesn't work and causes the kernel to hang
I tried to start debian without using a GUI using the single parameter. This also didn't work.
acpi_backlight=vendor also did not fix the problem.
I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing.Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch.At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder.For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. I just reinstalled Debian 8.3.0 "Jessie" on my laptop using KDE as the desktop environment instead of GNOME. Using GNOME I had no problems with the keyboard or mousepad but now changing to KDE my keyboard and mousepad won't work. It was obviously working fine during the install but now won't work once I login my desktop. I'm using a USB keyboard and mouse in the meantime.
I've tried going into System Settings->Input Devices->Keyboard and changing the keyboard model. Originally it had installed by default as "Generic 101-key PC", and I tried swapping to "Asus Laptop" but that made no difference. I tried a few other random keyboard models but that didn't make a difference either.
My laptop model is an: ASUS U40SD.
Any commands I can type into bash that could track down the problem.
Install Debian Squeeze onto Thinkpad T410. Got the basic things working and noticed that - movement of touchpad results in moving of mouse pointer, which is correct, but - tapping on the touchpad does not simulate a click action. Confirmed that the touchpad hardware is working by booting into a CrunchBang LiveCD. how I can enable the touchpad tapping action?

I recently installed Debian, using the amd64 Network Install .iso. I'm using XFCE4 as my desktop environment, and everything is working well... on my laptop's screen.
My desired setup is to have my laptop sitting on a well-ventilated shelf, closed, and to have an external monitor be my main monitor. I want this because I'm using my laptop as my "home" computer, so it never moves, and I don't like the keyboard/trackpad. My laptop has a VGA output, and I can get my desired setup on my Windows partition (not stating a preference ; just that the hardware CAN do what I want it to).
I've been working my way around the Internet for a few days, now, and I've got the commercial NVIDIA driver installed. If I run sudo nvidia-config --twinview I can get my external monitor to be part of the display, which is great, but it's part of a dual-screen monitor setup, which is not what I want at all, because (a) XFCE's multiple virtual desktops are good enough for me and (b) my graphics card is integrated, and I'm trying to squeeze every drop of performance out of my laptop that I can (1 gig of RAM; the less that my graphics card eats into it, the better). Plus, it'd be annoying to accidentally drop something on my laptop's screen, and then have to dig it out of the shelf in order to undo it. I'm not saying that I'm consistently clumsy, but I'd eventually end up doing it.
I have a Dell XPS M1330, which has a GeForce 8400M GS GPU. The binary (sigh) nVidia driver installed is version 190.53 (installed by sgfxi). This is working well: glxgears gives me about 2600 FPS and compiz is happy.An old Philips 170B is attached by VGA cable. I was looking to set up a method of switching resolution upon connecting to the monitor when working at the desk, since I don't like the 1280x800 resolution of the laptop.

I have a Fujitsu Siemans Amilo A1630 installed with squeeze and am having problems making the headphone jack work with ALSA, there is no sound from this port and jack auto-detect does not work. All drivers are present and correct and necessary modules for my sound device appear to be loading properly, the device seems fully functional except for headphones.
View 6 Replies View Relatedon my netbook I have a Debian unstable/sid system. A few days ago I did an apt-get (dist-)upgrade which I think also updated the X-Server. Since then my netbooks keyboard and touchpad are not working as soon as the desktop is started (I think gdm).
The Keyboard works during the Grub selection and also in recovery mode (Root Terminal), so I'm sure its not a hardware problem. Could it be that the X-Server unloads the kernel modules for those two devices?Also if I plug in a USB keyboard or mouce they are working.
My laptop's (Acer Travelmate P243-M-6456) headphone jack had been working fine, and has no issues when booted into Windows, but it suddenly stopped working.
I've gone through alsamixer, and the volume is up, and nothing seems to be muted, and I've tried to do everything I could throughout the sound options in the Gnome System Settings.

It's for a Lenovo x140e laptop with Jessie. Specs online commonly describe the laptop as having BCM43142 but I ran "lspci -knn | grep -iA2 net" and the output says I have BCM43228. Not sure why there is that discrepancy but I am assuming the latter, BCM43228, is what is actually in my computer.
Anyway, I originally installed "broadcom-sta-common", "module-assistant", and "broadcom-sta-source", but that resulted in nothing happening so I think I am going to "apt-get purge" those and start over.
I know about the Debian wiki "wl" page but it only provides instructions up to Wheezy, not Jessie. And I read many previous threads but they often contain different instructions and mixed results, plus there are many moving parts here (kernel, OS, driver, packages) and the instructions seem to be changing over time.
I was thinking I'd install these:
1) firmware-realtek
2) wireless-tools
3) module-assistant
4) broadcom-sta-common
5) broadcom-sta-dkms
6) broadcom-sta-source
Does the order of install for those above packages matter at all? Do I need the kernel header or not and, if so, how do I use it? Are there any other packages I need? What is the process?

I don't believe there's anything else wrong with it as the lights and fans act as normal when I turn it on. I hooked it up to a monitor but it doesn't automatically display on the external screen. So I have a pretty odd and possibly quite difficult request. Any step-by-step guide of which buttons to press after turning the machine on, in order to get it to switch to the external display? I just need something along the lines of, press enter, tab, type password, enter, press alt-a, down, down, down, enter, tab, etc. Another possible solution, a very long shot, would be a boot disk that defaults to an external screen?

I have been running linux on my thinkpad r50 for about a year, specifically 9.04. The problem is with this new 10.04 lts installation when I go to hook up an external monitor via the avg port and run xrandr to initialize the display, the laptop monitor panel becomes a garbled image and the television that is attached to the computer says no input. As of now I am stumped and open for assistance on this one.
