I've been running Ubuntu for about 2 years now. When I first put it on my Dell it was 9.0x. My HDMI port worked just fine to connect to my Plasma to watch movies on. I've only ever connected it 2-3 times. Since Fall '08 I haven't used it again. I never needed to.
Since that time, it stopped working. When available I upgraded to 9.04, 9.40 and now (effective 10.23.10) 10.04. It just doesn't work anymore. Neither VGA or HDMI. I can only assume S-Video will be the same story. Video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 8400m GS. Driver is version 173. I installed NVTV tv out (Nvidia Video output controller). It does nothing. When NVTV is typed into terminal, it says; Fatal: No supported video card found.
How do I get 'the Desktop effects' to work on M1530?

Im having trouble figuring out how I would update my BIOS on a Dell Dimension 8100
The newest BIOS i can find is here

But these downloads are both .exe files The Dell is older and has a floppy drive, but the windows machine Im using does not.
Is there a way to make this as a cd on the Windows machine and boot into that on the Dell? any time Ive updated a bios it has been through Windows.
I have 10 dell 980s with centos 5.5 final on a closed network (I can't connect them to the internet). The internal speaker works but anything plugged into the front or back jack doesn't work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using CentOS 5, I have recently installed it on my Dell LATITUDE laptop but the resolution was 800x600. I've tried to put it on 1680x1050 and it worked out well I guess but the graphics had become very slow. For example I have to wait 5 to 6 seconds to scroll from page to page in a pdf file. Minimizing a window takes also a lot of time. I have a NVIDIA card in my PC.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Centos-5.3-x86_64 in a PowerEdge2950 machine, to serves as an ftp server using proftpd-1.3.2. I noticed that the CPU load is much higher than the days when I was using RHEL-4.7-X86_64. In the past, CPU load get higher than 100 only when there're about 400 online users. But in Centos-5.3, the CPU load gets higher than 150 when there're 200 users.
The details of the server machine: Intel Xeon E5430, 16 GB RAM, 1.8 TB as a RAID disk, 400GB hardisk used to installed the system.
More details:
I have two Dell PowerEdge 2650 servers. One is a dual Xeon 3GHz with 4GB of RAM (4 x 1GB sticks). The other is a single Xeon 2.4GHz with 3GB of RAM (2 x 512MB and 2 x 1Gb sticks).
Both are running 32 bit CentOS 5.3. Both are running the same kernel (vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5). I've even diff'ed the two kernels to ensure that they are in fact identical. The only parameters being passed to the kernel via the grub config are "ro root=/dev/sda2"
The BIOS shows 4GB detected on the 4GB server and 3Gb detected on the 3GB server on boot.
Dell OpenManage for the 4GB server shows "Total Installed Capacity 4096 MB, Available to the OS 3804 MB", as I would expect. However, OpenManage for the 3GB server shows "Total Installed Capacity 3072 MB, Available to the OS 1011 MB". (i.e. it is only seeing the first 1Gb of memory).
cat /proc/meminfo confirms the above; the 4GB server shows "MemTotal: 3895980 kB", but the 3GB server shows "MemTotal: 1035024 kB"
I installed the lshw utility, and on the 3GB server it shows all 4 memory sticks, the full 3GB:
*-memory
description: System Memory
physical id: 1000
slot: System board or motherboard

The official repo is not working as per the instructions found here:URL...There is no package called srvadmin-all or srvadmin* or similar or anything omsa or openmanage related. There is hardly anything in the repo so installing the repo doesn't help to yum install anything useful so far.How are you installing Dell OpenManage tools on CentOS 5? Where do you get your rpms from or which repos are you using for that?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new OptiPlex 780 from Dell, I downloaded CentoOS x86_64 from [URL]. The installer runs the graphics mode OK, when I reboot into normal, the graphics doesn't work.
The last messages I see are:
Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.6 starting
starting clock,
starting UDev
then the display goes away, the montior says "Not Support" The monitor is 1 day old and supports VGA to 1680x1050.
I try pressing "I" (and/or "i") when Red Hat first starts, but the interactive menu doesn't show.
I have two idenical machines, the other is running XP (the CentOS was also before I loaded CentOS), WinXP is allowing screen resolutions of
- 800 x 600 @ 60Hz, 72Hz, or 75Hz
- 1024 x 768 @ 60Hz, 70Hz, or 75Hz
- 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz or 75Hz
- 1680 x 1050 @ 60Hz
...all working on the same monitor.
During Bios boot, the monitor shows 600x800 @ 60Hz, during the text-only start of CentOS, it shows 720x400 70Hz. After CentOS boot shows starting udev, the montior breifly shows 720x400 70Hz, then "Not Support".
So....
Why isn't CentOS using the same graphics mode it used during installation (that worked fine)
I am running Zimbra 5.0.2 with ClamAV and I need to upgrade clam anti virus. It's for a Centos 5.4, Dell PE 2950 machine. On their Wiki for upgrades at [URL]. They recommended either of the Red hat versions - Redhat 5.x 32-bit or the Redhat 5.x 64-bit. Are there any known problems using either of these two versions on my Centos machine? Also, want to make sure, I am assuming I need the 32 bit version, is this correct? I am asking because in the past I have learned sometimes it's better to not go with the RH versions on Centos, can't remember where I heard that, so I want to make sure before I do the install.

View 2 Replies View Relatedsetting up CentOS 5.3 (x86_64) on a Dell Vostro 420 Workstation, I came across a few problems/questions:
1. I am using software RAID1 (including sda and sdb), following the tutorial on CentOS Wiki. However, in my case, GRUB wants to install on /dev/md0 (the RAID device mounted as /boot) instead of /dev/sda (which would be the MBR, as usual). This is confusing, since installing to a partition is completely different from installing to the MBR. I suspect it *does* write to the MBR since the system does boot afterwards and the MBR was empty before. So maybe /dev/md0 is just a bit imprecise If yes, is the MBR still written to sda only, so that it is necessary to setup grub on sdb separately, as indicated in the documentation?
2. Sound does not work. The sound controller (ICH10 family) seems to be recognized, but the sound test behaves strangely: Normally, you have the three test sounds, and only after that a window will appear asking for confirmation. On my machine, the confirmation window appears immediately (!) so it seems the system is not even trying to play the sounds. Very strange...
3. I am seeing this damned "BIOS Bug: MCFG area at f0000000 is not E820-reserved" message. (May or may not be related to issue #2) It seems many people have this problem, but there is no real solution. In few cases, a BIOS update did the trick, but I think most hardware manufacturers are not even considering this a bug as long as there are no problems in Windows. It does seem to depend on the distribution, however, so newer kernels obviously have learned to handle the situation. Is this being considered by the upstream provider? Switching to Fedora is not really an option here
I am looking to install Linux on a Dell Precision 340 with unpartitioned 17G (scsi) disk space available.
It is a 4-5 year old workstation with Nvidia Quadro2 MXR/EX video controller.

Which OS should I download and install?
Is the X86-64bit CentOS 5.3 an option?
I am having issues installing Centos on a Dell Poweredge 1950. I have tried 5.3 and 5.4, and the text only install. The error I get is when I select what keyboard layout to use. An error window pops up and says "Assertion ((C * heads + H) * sector + S == A) at dos.c:624 in function probe_partition_for_geom() failed " I can click ignore and cancel but it instantly pops back up. I have tried to look up the error but can't find any information on it.

how am I going to resolve this issue so that I have a chance to choose which OS I can boot into?
I've just installed 12 new Dell Optiplex 960 computers with Dell 2009W monitors. They are identical hardware and OS installs. Some of them are exhibiting a weird problem with their screens: They boot up and run just fine, but then the monitor goes black for 2 or 3 seconds, and comes back, with the small DVI icon popping up in the upper left corner to show which video connection is active. This repeats at random intervals continously; sometimes just a few seconds between, and sometimes many minutes.
The problem initially happened on just one machine so I had Dell swap the motherboard thinking it was a hardware issue. That did not fix it. Soon after that, I got reports from several users of the same problem on other of the new machines.
I've done a very basic install of CentOS 5.5, skipping all of my local configuration management stuff, and it still happens. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and over the last few hours the machine has been rock solid. No video issues at all.
Here is the output of lspci:
I was trying several times to install Centos 5.4 32bit via DVD or netinstall method. Installations stops at setp where is formating disk and always at 12%. No error messages only can't format logical volume and please reboot server. Also deleted and create fresh RAID 1 array, but not helping.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running a server in Dell which has RAID1 and hot plug 2 disks. It's been running for a while, but I was thinking it may crash anytime. So got a spare one, and wanted to test it how it works.I have never done this before. Can I simply, on a running machine, unplug the Disk 2 and connect the new Disk there? (Without interrupting the service as a silent mode?) Or does it have to be shutdown first, and unplugged, reinstalling all software/centos/etc etc? How do you do this update? Also how do you know when you replaced the disk? Do you have anything special to monitor that disk 1 or disk 2 is end of life?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing a Dell Optilex 280 desktop with Centos 5.4, I configured sendamil, squid and all the extras I needed for a proxy and email server. All was fine until I switched the machine off. I had changed the resolution before and all was working fine. Now I have lost my gui , the system starts O.K but goes blank after "starting udev". I can use webmin to administer the server from a nother desktop/laptop but the monitor is totally blank. I tried most configurations on the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file even tried to create a new one using X -configure but still nothing changed. I cant afford to reinstall because of the time it takes to update the box, our broadband connections are so expensive this end of the world (Zimbabwe) and not so efficient. I have looked at the logs and tried to google but the solutions wont work for me? I suspect there could be an issue with the intel graphics adapter?

I'm tired of doing the ndiswrapper shuffle every time I change OS's (about every 6 months), and am considering just yanking the Broadcom and replacing it with something that will work with Centos out of the box. Preferably it should also work well with Windows, as I may have to revert to XP in the future. Does anybody have any recommendations? Yes, I should look at the HCL, and yes, I plan to, but yes, I would like feedback from you, the expert users. I'm not sure how I will destroy the Broadcom card after I remove it; I'm thinking something involving a propane torch and/or a sledgehammer. I may post pictures.
