CentOS 5 :: Yum Update Three Systems With Only One Download?

Mar 31, 2009

I have three CentOS machines which want updating from CentOS 5.2 to 5.3 sometime in the next week or two.I've always just done su -c 'yum update' on each machine, and let it slowly download and update a zillion pkgs. And every time I do that, I tell myself that *next* time, I'll figure out a better way.

I'd like to be a little more efficient this time, and have the 2nd & 3rd machines re-use some of the packages that the first machine downloaded. Two are workstations, and the third, a headless non-X11 fileserver, so they have different (but overlapping) sets of packages that they'll need. But the in-common packages comprise a lot of downloading that I would rather do only once. There's some way to set up a local yum repo on my server, mirror *everything* onto it, and update all machines from it. But that looks trickier, and way overkill for my purpose. Or I could just download ISOs, and work from there, but two machines don't have optical drives to boot from, and the ISOs contain tons of stuff that none of these systems need, so the download savings would be cancelled out.

A little reading of forums/manpages/etc, and I think I want to make use of yum localupdate (which I've never tried before), and do something along the lines of: 1.) Update the first workstation. It'll download all pkgs it needs overnight, and then update itself: [wkstn]$ su -c 'yum update'

2.) Make sure everything is working correctly.

3.) Grab every *.rpm from wkstn's /var/cache/yum and all its subdirs, and copy these to a temp dir on the server's raid: [wkstn]$ cp -a /var/cache/yum /server/raida/wkstn_yum_cache

4.) Update any server packages that the wkstn already downloaded.[server]$ su -c 'yum localupdate /raida/wkstn_yum_cache/'

5.) Update any server packages that the wkstn did NOT download: [server]$ su -c 'yum update'

6.) Deal with anything that broke on the server. The raid drivers, for example, always seem to need rebuilding, after kernel updates.

7.) Update the other workstation.

Question #0: Will this do what I want? I've never tried yum localupdate before, and the yum manpage doesn't elaborate much. Am I really barking up the wrong tree? Is there some much better way of doing this, for updating just 2 to 4 machines.

CentOS 5 :: Re-instal Windows XP - Systems Hangs?

Mar 29, 2009

I had a spare computer (Dell Optiplex GX270) which I had installed Centos 5 on and have been setting up asterisk (telephony) on it. My main computer has broken down and I need to load Windows XP back on to the Optiplex.

I put the Windows XP disk in the drive and directed the bios to boot from the cd. I get the message "Please wait while windows inspects your current hardware configuration" and then after about 10 seconds the screen goes blank (the cd also slows down and then stops) and then the systems seems to just hang.

If I take the cd out and boot from the hard drive Centos loads normally; therefore I'm assuming my problem is not a defective hard drive.

I've spent quite a bit of time searching online for a solution and although there seems to be several different situations where the above can occur, I'guessing that my ssues are related to either partions/mbr and or the bios/cmos. I'm really new to Linux and not knowledgable on partitions and cmos so I'm hoping someone could help me out here.

I've checked in the bios and could not find an option to restore the settings to factory defaults. Should I pull the csmos datterry out? Does this restore the bios settings to factory defaults?

5 Hardware :: CentOS 5.4 Boot Hangs With CyberPower UPS / Solution For This?

Dec 13, 2009

Let me start off with the usual: I'm a linux newbie but am doing pretty good so far with google by my side. I've come across a problem I cant seem to find an answer to:

I just got a CyberPower 685 AVR UPS. I Installed their power panel software and it works great in CentOS 5.4. When I reboot, the system hangs right after the "Red Hat Nash 5.6..... Starting" message. I've left it for 20 mins so far and it's still hanging. If I unplug the USB data/shutdown cable, within about 10 seconds it starts detecting hard drives and continues booting...

Ive even returned the UPS for another to see if it was bad, and it still is giving me problems.

CentOS 5 Server :: Xen Guest Won't Boot After Update / Solution For This?

Dec 21, 2009

I'm experiencing some rather severe problems after updating my Centos 5.4 system (Virtual Xen guest). What happens is that when the system boots it complains about missing .so files which prevents about 50% of the services installed from running.
I'm suspecting that it has something to do with selinux for two reasons: 1. The first services to go down complains about the security context of some files, and 2. selinux was kinda the reason I decided to update in the first place as it was disabled when it shouldn't be (enabled in system-config-securitylevel, disabled when running sestatus).
The whole boot-sequence ends with alot of "INIT: Id 'X' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"-messages (including all runlevels) before it goes stale, and I can do nothing.
The server in question had undergone very little tinkering from my part, pretty much none at all, the only services installed after installation was apache, mysql and webmin.

Details:
CentOS 5.4 is installed on both the host and guest.
The guest runs on an lvm-partition.
I have two other vm's(also CentOS) running just fine, altough I'm a bit weary of updating them .

Attached are some screenshots of the boot-process.

I hope some one here can share some insight on this problem. It's making me pretty nervous seeing that our whole network is run by CentOS-installations (not that I'm certain that CentOS is the culprit).

CentOS 5 :: Create A Workflow For Upgrading Various Systems Using Kickstart?

Mar 18, 2011

I am trying to create a workflow for upgrading various systems using kickstart. I was hoping folks can point me in the right direction.I have a system which already has Centos installed on it. However it is a stripped down version of Centos using a custom kickstart installer. Now I would like to upgrade these systems, using an updated kickstart file spec. I would like to be able to copy over required files into a partition on the system, make a change in the grub.conf, reboot the system and expect the system to use the kickstart file and the iso file located on a partition on the system to self upgrade the entire system. The partition which holds the iso on these systems may be raided, or it may be an LVM partition.

How do I specify in the kickstart file that the location of the iso is on an LVM partition? Is this even supported? I have tried specifiying the disk like so:

< -- isolinux/ks/harddrive.cfg -- >
upgrade
text
harddrive --partition=mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol02 --dir=/isolinux

[code]...

But the installer did not seem to like it. Instead of the iso, can I put the entire tree instead? Would that work?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Hard Drives - Creating "alternate" Boot Partitions And "alternate" Root File-systems On The New Drives

Aug 10, 2010

I have a Centos 5.5 system with 2* 250 gig sata physical drives, sda and sdb. Each drive has a linux raid boot partition and a Linux raid LVM partition. Both pairs of partitions are set up with raid 1 mirroring. I want to add more data capacity - and I propose to add a second pair of physical drives - this time 1.5 terabyte drives presumably sdc and sdd. I assume I can just plug in the new hardware - reboot the system and set up the new partitions, raid arrays and LVMs on the live system. My first question:

1) Is there any danger - that adding these drives to arbitrary sata ports on the motherboard will cause the re-enumeration of the "sdx" series in such a way that the system will get confused about where to find the existing raid components and/or the boot or root file-systems? If anyone can point me to a tutorial on how the enumeration of the "sdx" sequence works and how the system finds the raid arrays and root file-system at boot time

2) I intend to use the majority of the new raid array as an LVM "Data Volume" to isolate "data" from "system" files for backup and maintenance purposes. Is there any merit in creating "alternate" boot partitions and "alternate" root file-systems on the new drives so that the system can be backed up there periodically? The intent here is to boot from the newer partition in the event of a corruption or other failure of the current boot or root file-system. If this is a good idea - how would the system know where to find the root file-system if the original one gets corrupted. i.e. At boot time - how does the system know what root file-system to use and where to find it?

3) If I create new LVM /raid partitions on the new drives - should the new LVM be part of the same "volgroup" - or would it be better to make it a separate "volgroup"? What are the issues to consider in making that decision?

Debian :: Rsync And Different File Systems ?

Oct 21, 2010

I have 2 different mounts. One points to a local windows share(NTFS ->Samba) and the other one points to a PPTP VPN connection sharing(I belive that is NTFS too). I use "cifs" scheme in my fstab to mount these. And I use my Debian box to copy between these 2 mounts. I have started using Rsync for that purpose, I think that it works fine for now. My main problem is that it looks like Rsync cannot figure out if the files are same or not in source and target folders when I use these mounts. Most of the time Rsync copies the same files and folders over and over again even though those files and folders are on the target.

I am wondering if there is a way to make this scheme work? Being on a Vpn connection(slow) a Windows box, Rsync could have save a lot of my time if it could have recognized the files and folders that are same on both ends

Networking :: Distributed File Systems

Jan 21, 2010

Last year I was looking into fault-tolerant distributed file systems and I recall one kernel-based system that required a physical partition on each machine in the cluster, but would treat it as a single volume - ie. a write on one server would appear on the disk on all the servers.Unfortunately I didn't bookmark the specific system I was looking at, and now a year later I can't remember the details. What I don't want is NFS - a single file server with a file system mounted on various machines. What I do want is mirroring - one disk shared among multiple servers, so that if one server dies, it doesn't make any difference to the rest of them.

A bit of investigation turned up Red Hat's GFS, which kind of looks like what I want, but looks more and more like an NFS model to me. I was wondering what everyone's opinion of the various options out there were.
