But the VMWare web access page where we can login to console and create virtual machines doesn't require internet access.I am a newbie to linux and also network issues.How to figure out what is the problem? Are there any step by step guide to investigate this issue?All the pages I open get stuck with "waiting for abc.com" etc.It never opens.Javascript is enabled for this browser.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am fairly new on CentOS and am in the process of setting up a small home office network that shares Internet access through the Linux (CentOS) box.I have two network interface cards The Linux box is also the DHCP server. My challenge is to get the client machines to access the Internet! I have a PPP connection to the ISP. Essentially I followed these Instructions CENTOS REDHAT Internet Connection Sharing. Pretty straight forward but I am still not able to get clients to access the Internet. I defined the DNS server through DHCP (196.44.x.y). I assumed it has to do with default gateway and it is set as follows: on the Linx box the gateway is my ppp0 link. DHCP uses eth1 (LAN card) fixed IP as the gateway. All clients are reflecting this information. The firewall (iptables) is reflecting the FORWARDING and POSTROUTING rules as advised.
Is there a step I mioght have missed to get this working? I tried to Google but its not getting me far.
I installed CentOS 5.6 (kernel: 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5) with X Window on my HP Compaq 6710b. I also downloaded the firmware iwl3945 for my Intel Pro Wireless 3945 and manually installed it, reloaded the iwl3945 module and enabled NetworkManager. I could then get the wireless network connection worked on my graphical environment. I installed additional software manually by using the terminal window (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) and everything worked perfectly.
However, when I switched to text-based environment by issuing the commend "sudo init 3" (changing the user level) and logging in as root, I could not get any internet connection. I tried to use lynx and I got the error message: "Unable to connect to remote host". I am a complete newbie in Linux and I tried to google and search for solution within centos.org but I could not find.
I am setting up a Beowulf Cluster using CentOS 5.5. I have the head node with two NIC devices eth0 and eth1. eth0 is the one that is connected to the WAN while eth1 provides the internal LAN connection. I am trying to configure internet connection sharing with the slave nodes on the network so that I can update/install software as needed via ssh sessions using yum. I have set up the master node with the requisite changes to iptables to enable IPv4 forwarding. From my slave nodes I can ping ip address from the terminal, but my domain name resolution is not working. i.e. if I ping [URL] it can not resolve, but if I ping 74.125.224.50 (one of google's IP's) I can communicate with the machine without a problem. I also ran the configuration tool provided in the README section of the forum on the slave node and the master node. The links are:

Ok, I had a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 after my backtrack 4 install stopped working.(bluetooth messed with hal or something mouse and keyboard wouldn't work) I plug my D-link G-122 (old laptop without built in wifi) and network manager recognized instantly. But whenever I connect to a network I can't get to the Internet. It will connect and say its connected, but no Internet. It's the exact same thing on my desktop.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'll plug in my Netgear wireless USB adapter, and it'll recognize it right away. I'll type in my WEP key, and then it will say configuring. It will then bring up a "Secrets for [router]", with a ASCII key, and I'll check the pass phrase I entered, which is the correct WEP key. I then hit okay, and it says "setting up network address", and then brings up the Secrets page over again.
This particular wireless card works fine on Ubuntu, and worked fine on Zenix, but for some reason, won't work with Kubuntu.
The install went fine but the only issues is getting the server on the network.
I can't ping any thing other that the ip address assigned to the server.
I did it through the gui , the command line and using ifconfig and editing the ifconfi-eth0 file and nothing works.
any ideas on how to get this to work.
i see nothing wrong in the messages.log file either.
Is there any way to setup the Centos Directory Server without an internet connection?? i tried using the command: yum install centos-ds
but this just tries to connect to the internet to to download the packages. Is there a site where i can find the package so that i can copy it to my server and install it or is there some other way to do this?
Using Centos 5.4 I've successfully set up pppd and wvdial to automatically dial out but I need wvdial to call an alternative number if the number is busy or dialout fails for some other reason and I cannot get this to work. I've gone back to basics and tried manually soliciting wvdial with a minimal wvdial.conf:

I have e LAN connection eth0 which is connected to internet.
I have a Wireless connection wlan0.
I want to share my internet connection with wireless connection.
I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.
The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:

If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.
I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.
