5 Hardware :: CentOS 5.4 Boot Hangs With CyberPower UPS / Solution For This?

Dec 13, 2009

Let me start off with the usual: I'm a linux newbie but am doing pretty good so far with google by my side. I've come across a problem I cant seem to find an answer to:

I just got a CyberPower 685 AVR UPS. I Installed their power panel software and it works great in CentOS 5.4. When I reboot, the system hangs right after the "Red Hat Nash 5.6..... Starting" message. I've left it for 20 mins so far and it's still hanging. If I unplug the USB data/shutdown cable, within about 10 seconds it starts detecting hard drives and continues booting...

Ive even returned the UPS for another to see if it was bad, and it still is giving me problems.

Fedora :: Boot Hangs After Anacron / Solution For This?

Aug 16, 2009

In F10 the boot sequence hangs just after loading anacron. I booted with interactive mode and after saying 'yes' to starting anacron I'm prompted to start 'local'. When I say yes, my system hangs.

I've seen quite a few posts regarding very similar issues that people were having. None of them seem to have a clear cut solution.

Some posts mentioned about the wrong video drivers, however I've been using the same video drivers for a couple of months now and never experienced this problem.

I looked at /etc/rc.local and all it has in it is 'touch /var/lock/sybsys/local'

I also looked at the file above and there is nothing in it.

Any ideas/solutions? Everything was working just fine the other day. so I'm completely baffled.

CentOS 5 Server :: Xen Guest Won't Boot After Update / Solution For This?

Dec 21, 2009

I'm experiencing some rather severe problems after updating my Centos 5.4 system (Virtual Xen guest). What happens is that when the system boots it complains about missing .so files which prevents about 50% of the services installed from running.
I'm suspecting that it has something to do with selinux for two reasons: 1. The first services to go down complains about the security context of some files, and 2. selinux was kinda the reason I decided to update in the first place as it was disabled when it shouldn't be (enabled in system-config-securitylevel, disabled when running sestatus).
The whole boot-sequence ends with alot of "INIT: Id 'X' respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"-messages (including all runlevels) before it goes stale, and I can do nothing.
The server in question had undergone very little tinkering from my part, pretty much none at all, the only services installed after installation was apache, mysql and webmin.

Details:
CentOS 5.4 is installed on both the host and guest.
The guest runs on an lvm-partition.
I have two other vm's(also CentOS) running just fine, altough I'm a bit weary of updating them .

Attached are some screenshots of the boot-process.

I hope some one here can share some insight on this problem. It's making me pretty nervous seeing that our whole network is run by CentOS-installations (not that I'm certain that CentOS is the culprit).

Hardware :: External USB Drive - Mkfs Hangs / Solution For This?

Nov 13, 2010

I have a 1TB external USB drive that I'm having a lot of trouble with.

First I created a 500G partition, then formatted it with ext3. That went as expected.

Then I tried to copy a large (~50G) archive to it, and at about 13G it just stopped. I was using "watch" to view the progress, and it just stopped suddenly. I left it for quite a while, to see if it was actually doing something, just slowly, but nothing.

I tried to kill the copy command, but it wouldn't die. I killed the parent processes, and it just kept moving up the process tree until init was its parent. I tried rebooting.. I got the message "system is going down for reboot now", then the first few messages of the reboot process, and then it just stopped at "unmounting local filesystems". Again, I left it for a while, nothing. I ended up hard booting it.

After rebooting, I recreated the partition, then tried formatting it. This time it started writing inode tables, then just stopped at a certain point. I think at 133/4001. Again, I left it for a while and it didn't move.

Again, I tried killing the process and it moved up the tree until init was its parent. Rebooting hung at the same place, and again had to hard boot it.

This time I deleted the partition and tried creating a small partition - 500M. mkfs formatted it as expected, and I was able to mount and write to the partition.

I deleted the small partition, and tried creating a larger one - 100G this time. fdisk created the partition just fine (and did not complain or report any errors through this whole process), but again mkfs gets stuck.. this time at 34/801 inode tables. I haven't been timing it, but I want to say it's been at least 10 - 15 minutes.

dmesg reports some drive errors, but I'm not sure what they mean code...

CentOS 5 :: Hal Daemon Hangs On Boot?

Oct 27, 2010

I installed Centos 5.5 yesterday and discovered that the hal daemon was failing to start on boot.

The messages showed that the hal daemon was hanging because nss_ldap could not connect to the ldap server. It eventually failed and the system came up multiuser without it.

When I started looking into the problem I discovered that hald was being started quite early in the boot process. It's sequence number was 26 (if I remember correctly). This was even before nscd.

If I chkconfiged it off and booted, I could start it successfully once the system was up.

I changed the sequence number to 98 and bring it up relatively close to the end of the boot process.

This works and it starts normally.

Is starting it as early as 26 in the boot process done for a reason? It seems to me that it should definitely not be started before nscd. Does it matter that I moved it to the end of the boot process?

Fedora Installation :: Fc14 Hangs After Kernel Update / Solution For This?

Aug 8, 2011

I am unable to boot with kernel 2.6.35.13-92.fc14.x86_64 which was installed while applying software updates. It hangs with the last message issued "Registering binary handler for Windows Applications". Searching led to it being related to a problem with the nvidia drivers. I followed the directions in several posts - delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf, reboot, run nvidia-xconfig, reboot and all is fine, but not in my case. The first reboot works but the screen is wrong. There is a 1 inch wide black border around the presentation window. If I then do the nvidia-xconfig and reboot, i am back to where I was before - boot hangs after issuing "Registering...". If I boot to the last good kernel, everything works fine. This happened to me once before and I was able to fix it by rebuilding the nvidia kernel (I think that was what I had to do), but I can't find out how to do that. I have akmod and kmod installed which are supposed to take care of this problem. I booted to kernel 13-92 recovery mode, deleted the xorg.conf file and ran nvidia-xconfig from there. Still fails. I don't know what to list here, but I will do my best to supply whatever is necessary.

Ubuntu :: Installation Hangs U9.10 On Dell Studio 1749 / Solution For This?

Dec 11, 2010

I've been attempting to install 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Studio 1749 with the intention of making a dual-boot system. Attempting to install with a live CD using the default settings, I got as far as pressing ENTER on "Install Ubuntu" before the screen went completely black. The CD drive spun wildly, but nothing ever appeared on the screen. I tried the fix detailed here:

http://bennybeta.blogspot.com/2009/1...udio-1555.html

typing "nomodeset" as an option, and using the "apic=off" option. When I did this, I was no longer greeted with a blank black screen, but instead with a blinking cursor, but the installation still hung. The keyboard was unresponsive and I could not open a terminal. I also tried using the alternate installer instead, and got the same results.

After this, I tried installing using wubi, and on boot I get exactly the same results: black screen without "nomodeset" and a blinking cursor otherwise.

I should also mention that the same thing happens for every option on the installation screen, including the option to "try ubuntu" by booting from the CD.

Does anyone know what could be causing this issue, and how I might install ubuntu on my machine?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Boot Hangs With E1200 Processor?

Mar 28, 2009

System has a boot partition on raid1. The root filesystem is on RAID1/LVM.During the boot process, it gets to here:

Intel machine check architecture supported.
Intel machine check reporting enabled on CPU#1.
CPU1: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU E1200 @ 1.60GHz stepping 0d

[code]...

most of the time, it will not reboot. I can cycle power, and, eventually, it does boot. So, hardware issue perhaps? Something else? What can I do, or add to the configuration to help debug this and figure out why? For boot options, I have tried noapic, apm=off, noht, nomce, nousb, nousbstorage, and none of those helped. As the machine is remote, to mess with console stuff, I have to get a KVM over IP hooked up, which I can do.

CentOS 5 :: Udev Hangs On Boot For A Long Time, Suspect Pam_console_apply?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm hoping someone knows about this one... I'm running the latest CentOS 5.4 with kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 (x86_64).When I boot the machine, it gets to the udev starting bit, hangs for like 5 minutes, then prints a message "Failed, will continue in the background." Then it boots OK after that.I tried booting again with the kernel option (from grub) "udevdebug", and what I saw when it tried again was a million messages saying it was waiting for "/sbin/pam_console_apply" to return, but I guess it wasn't returning... ;) Again, after 5 minutes, it gave up and finished booting. Now, this host is an LDAP client.

I figured that may have something to do with it as it is likely that pam_console_apply tries to make an LDAP lookup, which is wrong, because networking hasn't even started yet. If I disable LDAP (by removing ldap lookups in nsswitch.conf), I get no pam_console_apply errors from udev and it boots quickly. But that's a bummer, I need LDAP on this box, and I don't want my boot time to be 7-8 minutes. ;)Presumably before, when LDAP was enabled and it waited 5 minutes and then notified me that it will "continue in the background", that it was eventually successful after networking started. LDAP otherwise works fine on this box, just like all the other servers we have. This is new behavior, I've not seen it with CentOS 5.3 and below. Has anyone seen this? Any hints on what I can do to avoid it? It seems like a pam bug or something, but I don't know for sure.

Ubuntu :: Cyberpower UPS Integration With Gnome Tools Possible?

Jun 1, 2011

I recently purchased a Cyberpower CP1000PFCLCD UPS and much to my surprise when connected via USB to my PC (running Natty) the Gnome Power Management tool is able to see it and read some data, however the support is not complete. Gnome always thinks the UPS is supplying 0.0V although it is does properly read some data such as 'Time to empty'. Is it possible to configure the Gnome power application to properly speak to the UPS? If its not possible to have Gnome play nice with this UPS is it possible to at least have the UPS be ignored by the power mgmt tools?

I am able to use the Cyberpower utility but it would be slick to be able to use the Gnome tools for its history and statistics.

CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?

Mar 21, 2011

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.

When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
