CentOS 5 :: Disabling "Smart Card Manager"
Apr 2, 2009In CentOS 5.3 there is a new "Smart Card Manager" window that pops up when I log in to KDE. Is there any way to disable it?

Fedora :: F12 - Smart Card (DoD CAC) Stopped Working
Dec 16, 2009Our smart card readers stopped working with Firefox and Thunderbird after upgrading from Fedora 9 to 12. When I first opened it, Thunderbird warned that the "CAC Reader (DoD Configuration Extension)" is incompatible with the current version (3.0b4) and disabled the extention. Firefox (3.5.5) just doesn't work. The module listed in Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird [Security Devices] was "/usr/lib64/pkcs11/libcoolkeypk11.so" which is still there. To get it working in Fedora 9 I was able to run an installer from [URL]. That was before my VeriSign software certificate expired.
Now I can't even connect to forge.mil because they require a PKI cert to connect. I'm wondering how they expect someone to get a driver for their CAC reader if they need a working CAC reader to get the driver - seems like a "Catch 22" situation. I also still have the rpm's that I downloaded before from software.forge.mil. I tried installing those but that didn't help.

There is no module named "linux-vdso.so". It looks like there was a name change that broke the libccid.so dependencies. I tried creating links within "/lib/modules/2.6.31.6-166.fc12.x86_64/" named linux-vdso.so pointing to vdso.so but it still isn't working. I've unloaded the module within Firefox (and Thunderbird) preferences within the [Security Devices] manager. Then tried adding it back using the [Load] button and specifying the coolkey library again but it's still not working.
Red Hat / Fedora :: Smart Card Authentication In RHEL6?
Mar 2, 2011I have recently installed RHEL6 BETA on my desktop. the login page is somewhat different from RHEL5.4. I can see 3 option
1) Log into session with smart card authentication
2) Log into session with fingreprint
3) Log into session with username & password.
By default only first option is active. If I press cancel, then only I can get the options for user & other.Then if I am selecting my user account and giving the password, nothing is coming. The screen is just flicking & coming back to original. No authentication failure can be seen.

Jul 3, 2010I have a Dell Inspirion 3500 laptop with the following specs pentium II 266mhz processor floppy drive (registers in BIOS, attached to serial port in back) CD-ROM drive (doesn't registers in BIOS, although is displayed in system intialization prior to boot) 4 GB hard drive (wiped with Darik's Nuke and BOOT floppy disk)
I have tried to boot from all sorts of Windows CD's and Linux CD's. None will boot. So I choose to boot from USB. Since It is such an old laptop I needed to load the USB drivers before booting. SMART BOOT MANAGER failed. PLOP BOOT MANAGER booted to its own menu. It still would not boot to CD. So I tried putting an exact copy of the remix ISO onto a USB and loading it. This failed so I used UNETBOOTIN to extract the ISO to USB. PLOP finally recognized it and loaded the UNETBOOTIN MENU. From there I load the Graphical environment (since the dev said it wont load any other) Then UNETBOOTIN loads the REMIX into the "LIVE ENVIRONMENT" from USB. Once I was in the "LIVE ENVIRONMENT" I right clicked and opened a "TERMINAL EMULATOR" and from there I ran the �sudo ./install.sh� command to install it from the USB stick (dev's instructions). From there it says it can only install to a single blank hard drive of at least 500mb, but it makes no allowance for alternative hardware or software changes. Is it possible that since I have a floppy,cdrom,and usb stick installed during the install that it is causing an error? I choose yes.I enter username , then click yes.Then I choose hostname , and click yes. Now for the final step It says that the drive has partitions or filesystems in place. Here is what it displays

Fedora :: Getting Smart Card Reader Added As Security Device In Firefox?
Jun 10, 2009Anyone running fedora 11 have any luck getting a smart card reader added as a security device under firefox?
Specifically from firefox: Edit-Preferences-Advanced-Encryption tab-Security_Devices-Load;
Enter arbitrary name and "/usr/lib64/libcoolkeypk11.so" as the module.
This worked fine in fedora10 and was the necessary step to getting a card reader to work with firefox. In fedora11 (with firefox beta) the browser just comes back with nothing, it doesn't even respond. Note I am familiar with the concept of pki and certificates as well as certutil, pkcs11_inspect, pklogin_finder, etc. Also note utlities like pkcs11_inspect and pklogin_finder and esc all work and communicate with the reader and read the contents of the card but smart card login configured via the authentication applet (as working in fedora 10) is not working either.

CentOS 5 Server :: Configure The Sendmail Smart Host?
Dec 29, 2009I have setup CentOS 5.2 with Nagios to monitor my network and have that configuration almost done. I have also setup Sendmail to forward all mail (really only Nagios notifications) out to my Exchange server using define('SMART_HOST', 'exchange.domain') in the sendmail configuration file and it seems to be working correctly.is there a way to configure Sendmail to forward all mail out through my Exchange server as it is now but send mail out to the internet itself if the exchange server is unavailable, somewhat like a failover configuration.

Mar 13, 2010The IP address acquisition problem I reported earlier has returned, and I am stymied. To recap: Ubuntu 9.10 would not obtain an IP address via a wired Ethernet connection. I resolved the problem at the time by configuring eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces:

and disabling Network Manager in Preferences > Startup Applications.After a powering down the PC today, the problem has returned. It appears that dhclient cannot obtain an IP address. This is true whether I am connected to the router (a Linksys WRT54G running Tomato), or directly to the DSL modem. When my usually wireless Ubuntu 9.10 laptop is wired to the router, it obtains an address almost instantly. I have made no changes to the network configuration since January. I have tried to keep current on Ubuntu updates.

When you do 'man bash', you'll see some words are highlighted. I'll say that the video card has used high intesity in these instances. How do I disable this video card capability? Can this only be done by recompiling the kernel? Of course, I am talking about the text consoles, i.e., the video card in text mode.
CentOS 5 Hardware :: SATA Disc SMART Data Shows New Drive Faulty Centos5.4?
Nov 26, 2009I have a new system using an Intel DG451D main board. I have been trying to get a RAID 1 mirror set working as the main drive in this system and for some reason, my SATA drives - three of them all new have had their SMART data changed to show the drives as failing and in need of replacement. Eventually the drive reports failure to the degree that the BIOS no longer recognises it. When loading the Centos os I was getting differing results because of this issue. I am not sure if this is a hardware issue even - I know that the drives were all very much OK and brand new - no good now! Just putting a feeler out to see if anyone has had a similar issue or to see if anyone knows of any possible known causes for this?
Failing any explanation, can anyone suggest a good desktop style Main Board that supports RAID well for Centos 5.4? I plan to sue this as a small server system so graphics etc are not important here.
CentOS 5 :: Disabling IRQ #169 On Startup ?
Apr 8, 2011I've run into this problem this week. The other night a power supply failed on a different system and appears to have surged the UPS which it and some other computers were plugged in to. One computer was fine, but the RAID server that is used for backups ended up with a bad disk and this "Disabling IRQ #169" message now shows up during boot, right after starting udev and setting the hostname. The system then sits there for 3-5 minutes before repeating a scroll of "/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 966: /bin/usleep: Input/output error"
I have booted with linux recovery from the CentOS DVD in order to replace the drive that was damaged. I rebuilt the raid array and all the data seems to be fine. There is another message though after "Red Hat nash version 5.1....." no raid disks and with names: "isw_bf jihdchhi_Hostname" failed to stat() /dev/mapper/isw_bf jihdchhi_Hostname
I was considering doing a complete reinstall of CentOS but if there is another solution I would much appreciate it, is it perhaps an issue with Grub not being able to find the updated array? As it is, it is impossible to boot the system except for using a live CD to do it.

Apr 2, 2010I have a Centos NIS server that is working fine with other linux clients. i need to have a Solaris 8 client bind to the NIS domain and found out that Sol8 does not support MD5 format passwords that the NIS master is generating. so i am trying to disable the MD5 encryption on the nis master and it does not seem to work. i run this command
authconfig --disablemd5 --enablenis --nisdomain=lab --updateall
and it restarts portmap and nis services ok. on the master server i then do a yppasswd username and a make passwd and it still uses the 34 char password format. what do i need to do to disable MD5 passwords in a centos nis server?
CentOS 5 Networking :: DNS Is SLOW After Enabling/disabling NetworkManager?
Mar 30, 2010I ran into this today accidentally turned on networkmanager and it took it upon itself to rewrite some things and proceeded to make any DNS lookups on my server Especially those reverse DNS for SSH and SFTP take so long they would just time out instead of completing.. Disabling networkmanager did not undo the damage either. Short fix, Erase your resolv.conf file and add 2 lines to it as so, your nameservers!
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
save, and run the following commands
service network restart
service httpd restart
service sshd restart
Mine had a search line added by networkmanager and some others, when i reverted it back to as above, almost instantly after restarting the services the systems lookups were once again, lightning fast. DNS lookups were taking upwards of 20 seconds for unknown reasons after this happenned

I had to create my own Centos 5.5 channels to sync yum repos and smart channels.
Here's the Centos 5.5 channel file for Smart:
Just shut Smart PM down, copy this file into /etc/smart/channels, and restart smart.
Smart should then detect the new channels (repos) for Centos 5.5
Update your channels in Smart, and you should then have yum repos and smart channels both in sync, looking at the same set of packages.
Copy this to CentOS-Base.channel, and add it to the /etc/smart/channels directory.

Disabling IPv4 packet forwarding but i already changed it to 1 at sysctl.conf One of the online forum says i need to configure the named.conf deleted some and run it(named.conf) and successful but still when I run network service I still get the :"Disabling IPv4 packet forwarding: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0" The network is getting the IP range but it doesnt get any Internet connection.

Sep 13, 2010I've installed from the CD the Centos version 5.5. When I try to connect to Internet I can't because I received some errors. I've the Intel Corporation 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller also a wireless slot (I've the wireless card DWL-G650+) When I turn on the pc and I go to "Ethernet Device", I see set: peth0 (Intel Corporation 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) ETHERNET CONTROLLER) and also set "Bind to MAC address": fe:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff I've set manually the IP address (I'm under router). Status is "Active" but can't go on the Net. When I change to "eth0 (Intel EtherExpress/100 driver)...sometimes become "Active" an other times said that the MAC address is different or to check the cable because can't find the IP. What can I do?

Is there some setting I need to make to get this working?Even BT-3 (which is quite old) recognizes the RT-73.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Sis 190 Card Not Working Well With CentOS 5.3?
Apr 13, 2009I installed CentOS 5.3 on my Shuttle SS-31T with SiS 190 network adapter. While booting the message "Bringing up eth 0 [ OK ]" appears. After booting it isn't possible to surf to an internet location (p.a. www.google.com). It's also impossible to ping other machines in the network. After typing ifconfig everything seems to be ok.
ipv6 is turned off
IP : 192.168.0.3
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.0.1
