Fedora :: Usual Username/password Prompt Laptop Comes Up With Smart Card Authentication & Can't Login?
Feb 8, 2010
Something has gone awry with my login. After the usual username/password prompt my laptop comes up with smart card authentication & I can't login. How do I get away from the graphical login so I can login & correct the problem?

I have recently installed RHEL6 BETA on my desktop. the login page is somewhat different from RHEL5.4. I can see 3 option
1) Log into session with smart card authentication
2) Log into session with fingreprint
3) Log into session with username & password.
By default only first option is active. If I press cancel, then only I can get the options for user & other. Then if I am selecting my user account and giving the password, nothing is coming. The screen is just flicking & coming back to original. No authentication failure can be seen.

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop -- clean HD, no other partitions.
(It's odd, though; when I go to System -> About Ubuntu, it tells me I have version 11.04 Natty Narwhal.)
Anyhow, when switching on my laptop, a short drumming sound effect can be heard when the login prompt appears on the GUI.
There are numerous threads on the Internet explaining various methods to disable this. I have done everything as instructed in these threads to no avail, including:
1) System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> Unlock -> [enter password] -> make sure "Play login sound" is unchecked (it was already) -> Close
2) System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> uncheck "Gnome Login Sound" -> Close
3) System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects -> Alert volume -> check "Mute" -> Sound theme -> No sounds -> Close
It's foolproof, really. Nevertheless, when restarting the computer, the drum sound is heard again at the login prompt.
I realize I can simply find and delete the sound files, but isn't that a bit harsh? Surely there must be a more elegant way to silence the login.

I am trying to become su in the terminal window. It asks for my password, I give my usual password and I get "authentication failure". I thought that my log in password works for the su as well?

I have set up my samba server. I tested from my windows side, all the public ones works fine except the [homes]. Here is my [homes] setting:
Code:
[homes]
comment = Home Directories
browseable = yes
writable = yes
The homes is suppose to let each user see his/her own home directory. But I tested at the windows side, I found that windows doesn't even prompt me about username or password, it just directly give me "not accessible" error. How do I config so my windows side at least prompt me about username/password?

I made my Fedora 13 box boot up automatically by adding the following to /etc/gdm/custom.conf
Code:
However, when it boots up it prompts me for my password so it can connect to my wireless network (I think it said something about not getting my user password at login). Is there anyway I can get it to remember this?
I would like to make this automatic because this will be a remote box that I will use as a file server, but it wont be turned on all the time. So I'll turn it on when I need it, but I'll need to connect to it remotely, so obviously it needs to be on the network.

My FC12 laptop won't boot. During the attempted boot, after blue/white progress bars finish displaying on the bottom of screen, nothing more seems to happen. The screen isn't totally blank in that I seem to have a text cursor and keyboard input is displayed. But, no prompt, no login prompt, X isn't running, etc. If I hit ESCduring boot, it displays the boot messages and the boot sequence stops after "Starting atd". I'm not sure if it's related, but I had previously experimented with creating a new xorg.conf file by running "Xorg -configure' and was testing the new file with "X -?? /etc/x11/xorg.conf.new" (I forget what the -?? option was). I assumed that this would not overwrite the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file and that if I ran into problems, that the original xorg.conf would be in place. how I can get this miserable thing to boot?

I started a new job and they use LDAP here. I built a new RHEL 5.5 server and configured LDAP. Usernames are recognized but the password is not. I can chown a file to a user name but when I try to login as the user it won't accept the password.I know the password is correct because I can login to any of the old boxes and it accepts the password. I ran authconfig-tui to tell my RHEL box to authenticate to ldap.

Can't seem to do it, wondering if anyone knows how? Normally there's something in sshd_config that can be switched to true or yes to allow root login but I can't see it in fedora 12.I can login via root at a terminal no problem, just not via ssh, I get access denied every time. Also, I need to login using password authentication.I've done: 227169 but that's just for GUI which I don't really need since I rarely ever log into the GUI.I have also searched through here and mostly only found info such as above, how to enable root login for GUI, or billions of posts about how logingin as root is bad but I cannotswer to my question.DISCLAIMER: Please do not reply to this thread if all you can contribute is the question of why I need root or to put some message telling me I can do everything using su, etc, etc. Please only contribute if you can answer my question. A: My machine and a valid quesiton. B: Spirit of Linux is open, not restrictive

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

The login cycles- I already have a problem with mounting something connected with USB (long term minor annoyance, but everything works), but suddenly I cannot log in. When I put my username and password in, the screen flashes black for about half a second, then the login screen re-appears. If I put the wrong password in, I get an authentication error message (as expected) without turning black and then cycling again.
I have no problems going into terminal mode and logging in. I've tried all sorts of suggestions related to this problem- reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, apt-get clean, sudo startx, and the last indicates that x-windows is already running. I've found a couple more things to try, but I'm not too sure how well they'll work. It seems to be connected with x-windows, but I don't know what is causing it. Last night I had a big problem that required reinstalling nautilus (couldn't set up a connection to a remote server), and that problem was fixed- but this developed when I booted this morning.

I'm working on sharing a user's home folder using the username and password of the user's lLnux account. I noticed that home folder sharing is quite easy as I just need to change the smb.conf file to enable it. However I can't seem to login anyway. It seems that Samba keeps its own records of username and passwords. Is there a way that I can map/sync the Linux users' usernames and passwords automatically to Samba? The end result should be that whenever I add a new user or a user changes his/her Linux login password,Samba automatically changes its password as well.

My daughter from New Zealand gave me her Acer Aspire 4315 Laptop/Notebook Linux System in December 2009 so that I could use it in bed on days that I was unable to get out to use my main computer as I am a very ill man. I was able to log into the unit as she just said to me to use her name and password to. I have been able to use the unit on the internet at home and my other daughters home through a home wireless system. I clicked on the Upgrade Icon which it did, I think it went from a 7. something to 8.something All the way through the set up it asked me questions and I just clicked yes thinking that was what I had to do. My problem now is, that when I turn the unit on it asks me for a username and password. I put the details my daughter gave me but it tells me invalid user and password. All I do know is that a friend of my daughter installed the Ubuntu Program onto the Laptop/Notebook. Can anyone tell me how or what I have to do now to be able to use the unit again as I am getting very frustrated with the whole thing. I am not used to using Ubuntu and am totally lost with it as I have always been a Microsoft user.

I just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?

Our smart card readers stopped working with Firefox and Thunderbird after upgrading from Fedora 9 to 12. When I first opened it, Thunderbird warned that the "CAC Reader (DoD Configuration Extension)" is incompatible with the current version (3.0b4) and disabled the extention. Firefox (3.5.5) just doesn't work. The module listed in Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird [Security Devices] was "/usr/lib64/pkcs11/libcoolkeypk11.so" which is still there. To get it working in Fedora 9 I was able to run an installer from [URL]. That was before my VeriSign software certificate expired.
Now I can't even connect to forge.mil because they require a PKI cert to connect. I'm wondering how they expect someone to get a driver for their CAC reader if they need a working CAC reader to get the driver - seems like a "Catch 22" situation. I also still have the rpm's that I downloaded before from software.forge.mil. I tried installing those but that didn't help.
mozilla-dod-configuration-1.0.2-0.noarch.rpm
firefox-mozilla-dod-configuration-1.0.2-0.noarch.rpm
thunderbird-mozilla-dod-configuration-1.0.2-0.noarch.rpm
Does anyone know if there is a later version of these RPM's or if there's another way to get our CAC readers working again with Firefox and Thunderbird?
Relevant Background Info:
Installed Packages:
ccid-1.3.9-2.fc12.x86_64
coolkey-1.1.0-11.fc12.x86_64

firefox-mozilla-dod-configuration-1.0.2-0.noarch
thunderbird-mozilla-dod-configuration-1.0.2-0.noarch
Could a renamed kernel module be part of the problem? What do you make of the following information?
Find library dependencies:
Code:
[root@inet3 ~]# ldd /usr/lib64/pcsc/drivers/ifd-ccid.bundle/Contents/Linux/libccid.so

[root@inet3 ~]# locate vdso.so
/lib/modules/2.6.31.6-166.fc12.x86_64/vdso/vdso.so
[root@inet3 ~]#
##!!
There is no module named "linux-vdso.so". It looks like there was a name change that broke the libccid.so dependencies. I tried creating links within "/lib/modules/2.6.31.6-166.fc12.x86_64/" named linux-vdso.so pointing to vdso.so but it still isn't working. I've unloaded the module within Firefox (and Thunderbird) preferences within the [Security Devices] manager. Then tried adding it back using the [Load] button and specifying the coolkey library again but it's still not working.

I'm about to turn off the prompt for a keyring password at logon following these instructions. But I wonder whether I'm going to be losing anything in the way of security. To eliminate the prompt for the keyring password, am I going to miss out on anything? In other words, just what does the keyring do? If it matters, I don't use Evolution e-mail (I just use old-fashioned web mail). To my knowledge the only passwords stored on my machine are that for my wireless network and whatever website passwords my browser stores.
