My production server has failed and am going to purchase a new computer to replace it, however the hard drive is still in tact. What is the best process for migrating over. Could I simply through the hard drive in the new computer and boot? If not would using the upgrade process on a DVD install disk do the trick?
View 4 RepliesI'm looking to stock my SuperMicro P8SCi with two 1-2 TB SATA hard discs, for running backups and web hosting. There are reviews of certain disks stating that the low-power disks will get kicked out of the Raid due to their slow response time, and it also appears that there have been quality problems with these newer disks, as if the race to size has lowered their reliability.
Can someone recommend a good brand and specific disks that you've had experience with? I'd rather not need to replace these after putting them in, but I also don't want to pay significantly more for an illusion of quality.
I have a used but good harddrive which I'd like to use as a replacement for a removed harddrive in existing raid1 array. mdadm --detail /dev/md00 0 0 -1 removed1 8 17 1 active sync /dev/sdb1I thought I needed to mark the removed drive as failed but I cannot get mdadm set it to "failed". I issue mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --fail /dev/sda1But mdadm response is:mdadm: hot remove failed for /dev/sda1: no such device or addressI thought I must mark the failed drive as "failed" to prevent raid1 from trying to mirror in wrong direction when I install my used-but-good disk. I want to reformat the good used drive first right? I believe I must prevent raid array from automatically try to mirror in the wrong direction.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm giving CentOS a new look as a desktop. Been a few years since I last installed it on anything but a server. While the default repositories have improved greatly I am still bereft of so much of my cherished and necessary software. No Gambas, Wesnoth (shows up but version is 2 years out of date), Chrome, Audacious ugly plugins, XMMS support for FLAC (shows up but errors out if I try to install), Cinalarra, Audacity, JACK audio, Ardour, Xine, Amarok, Blender, Gthumb, Abiword, gramps, disk utility, many KDE apps, it's almost like KDE is a forgotten desktop manager for CentOS repsositories and pages more of software I'm too lazy too list. All of this is software which shows up in Debian based distros and most of which in Fedora/SUSE repositories.
What are some good repositories for CentOS. I clearly have the wrong ones enabled or CentOS is a very crippled desktop. Here are the repositories I've added/have.

c5-media errors out so I have it disabled.

I looked online and can only seem to find references to it being in the bad plugins, yet the bad plugins documentation says it was moved to the good plugins.My experience downloading rpms is that the dependencies to build anything for gstreamer require I also download about 20 other rpms.I am reluctant to download/install rpms for a different distro.Has anyone successfully installed newer good plugins (particularly, souphttpsrc)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was running some python code, and I wanted to RAR some result data. I did a sudo apt-get install rar, but the installation got stuck so I killed it with ctrl-C. Since that might result in a broken package, I tried opening synaptic with sudo synaptic but it wouldn't start because apparently apt-get is still running in the background.
I tried to kill the process with kill $(grep apt-get) but it didn't work. Then I tried turning off my computer but it got stuck at a loading screen saying something about an incomplete install. Finally I just pressed the reset button, but instead of restarting normally, it beeped 2-3 times and nothing would show up on the screen. I repeatedly turned it off, wait a while, then turn it on, but nothing works. I tried unplugging everything (mouse, keyboard, internet, etc) except the monitor, but that didn't help. I tried hooking it up to another working monitor, but still got no improvement. The cause seems to be software-related but it's behaving like a hardware problem. By the way, the computer is dual-booted with Windows XP and Ubuntu but Windows wouldn't start either. Nothing at all shows up on the screen.
My graphic output is not that nice. How do I find out what kind of driver Centos is using? Can I fine-tune its performance? I tried to install the driver(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1) from NVIDIA website but it failed. I got the following log file.

i opened up my browser to surf the web and a page popped up i had never seen before.Apache 2 Test page powered by centos. Any address i put into my firefox browser won't come up and i'm stuck on this test page and,i can't locate it on my computer to remove it.How do i get rid of it and more importantly how did it get on my computer in the first place?

Finally I got a connection working in one direction: sending files from my mobile (Google Nexus One with Android 2.3.3) to the computer. But I can not send files from my computer to the phone. I also tried to send files from my desktop to my Laptop and it fails. I also tried it the other way around: from Laptop to Desktop... fail.
What is it? Is it still a bug in Bluedevil and all I can do is wait? Or is there some package missing? The following packages (regarding bluetooth) are installed:

I don't believe that it is hardware related, because it works one-way... If I should post logfiles or whatever.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I tried to install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire ASE380 desktop, and I think during the partition portion. I think I messed up the hard drive.
Now my computer won't recognize my hard drive. I've tried using the acer repair disks I made, I tried unplugging and checking all the cords and lines, I tired flashing the BIOS, I've tried using other boot disks like Ultimate boot CD, and Acer support is no help either.
I really don't know what to do now. It shows nothing in the boot setup or the BIOS set up. I've also tired the ALT - F10 for acer computers to enter and repair partition and nothing.
I just want to get this thing up and running. I'm tempted to just buy a new hard drive.
My friend gave me his old computer but he kept the hard drive, I have a computer with a 200 gb hard drive. could I partition the hard drive and have the computer my friend gave me access the other partition without having to take the hard drive out and connect it to the other computer?

Is there some way to do this. Maybe make a sata port on the raid computer appear lixe a hard drive to the server. Or use a usb 'crossover' cable to connect the 2.Is this even possible, or should I just use the raid computer as the file server too?

Everything works fine except one thing that, when I suspend the machine, the hard disk is always shut off in a "hard way". The sound is similar to the one you would hear when shutting down the machine by keeping pressing on the power button.. this is no good.

Here is what /var/log/messages say before the crash:

Can I simply move my hard drive to the new computers? I don't have to reinstall do I? Would I have to use a new kernel?
I have 2 computers, one running ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and the other runs Windows 7.
I have several sata hard drives that I keep files on. They are all formatted ext3. I have a blacx sata to usb dock on my ubuntu computer that I use to go through files and back up and such. I have a usb to sata dock on the windows 7 machine.
When I plug in the hard drive Windows says that it has to be formatted and the drive is "raw"
I can check the drive in ubuntu and everything is right
I tried installing ext2fsd and it sees the drive but wont let me select any file type or mount it. I think because its going through the usb port.
So how can I make windows 7 see and be able to access an ext3 formatted drive thats plugged into the usb port?
I have posted in regards to fixing some problems I had after running recoverjpeg, and most are fixed. However, this process (recoverjpeg) continues to find pictures and dump them into my hard drive. I am fighting an uphill battle. Is there a way to stop a program from running continuously? I removed the package, but it continues to find files on my computer and put them into my hard drive, which is a problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI got a problem with the motherboard of my computer and now I need to get some files out from the hard drive (an ext3 partition). I can access the files from another computer but because of the permissions of my user it doesn't let me copy the files over to another drive.
my computer was running Kubuntu 8.10 with a Vista dualboot. I also tried attaching the hard drive to another laptop, but because of the video drivers the display doesn't function properly.
After I burn the DVD image, I put the disc on the computer and boot. The installation screen appears, the acknowledgement screen appears, then the installation checks my system and gives me a yast window with an error about something related to URLs and repositories. I cannot continue with the installation.

My macbook pro stopped booting yesterday due to some file system corruption in the hard drive. I am able to access this drive through a linux live cd which I am using now but when I go to some folders it says "Could not enter folder /media/Macintosh HD/..." My question is how do I give myself the permissions to be able to access these files and transfer them to a network drive?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just want one last attempt at seeing if there's a solution. My Dell Studio 15 laptop HDD that runs Vista failed, I booted Ubuntu from a CD knowing that I should be able to recover my data.
However, Ubuntu can't find my HDD, it's not listed and "fdisk -l" doesn't result in anything. The BIOS seems to know that the HDD is there though.
