Ubuntu :: Computer Dead After Failed Apt-get
Nov 17, 2010
I was running some python code, and I wanted to RAR some result data. I did a sudo apt-get install rar, but the installation got stuck so I killed it with ctrl-C. Since that might result in a broken package, I tried opening synaptic with sudo synaptic but it wouldn't start because apparently apt-get is still running in the background.
I tried to kill the process with kill $(grep apt-get) but it didn't work. Then I tried turning off my computer but it got stuck at a loading screen saying something about an incomplete install. Finally I just pressed the reset button, but instead of restarting normally, it beeped 2-3 times and nothing would show up on the screen. I repeatedly turned it off, wait a while, then turn it on, but nothing works. I tried unplugging everything (mouse, keyboard, internet, etc) except the monitor, but that didn't help. I tried hooking it up to another working monitor, but still got no improvement. The cause seems to be software-related but it's behaving like a hardware problem. By the way, the computer is dual-booted with Windows XP and Ubuntu but Windows wouldn't start either. Nothing at all shows up on the screen.

My production server has failed and am going to purchase a new computer to replace it, however the hard drive is still in tact. What is the best process for migrating over. Could I simply through the hard drive in the new computer and boot? If not would using the upgrade process on a DVD install disk do the trick?

I have a question regarding Bluetooth with Bluedevil. Finally I got a connection working in one direction: sending files from my mobile (Google Nexus One with Android 2.3.3) to the computer. But I can not send files from my computer to the phone. I also tried to send files from my desktop to my Laptop and it fails. I also tried it the other way around: from Laptop to Desktop... fail.
What is it? Is it still a bug in Bluedevil and all I can do is wait? Or is there some package missing? The following packages (regarding bluetooth) are installed:
bluedevil
bluez
libbluetooth 3
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth
I don't believe that it is hardware related, because it works one-way... If I should post logfiles or whatever.

I have a laptop set up for dual-boot with Ubuntu and Win7. I also have a shared partition which I mounted as the /home directory in Ubuntu. The problem occurred as I was upgrading Ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04. In the middle of the install, my computer froze for some reason and ultimately I had to shut the computer off and restart. When I restarted the linux would freeze half-way through boot-up with a message saying that the drive was mounted. Before the message saying the drive is not mounted it gave the following error: Can not read 'etc/udev_rule.d/z80_user.rules'
When I boot up Win7 it is unable to mount the shared partition and says that the drive is not formatted. I am also unable to run the ubuntu recovery option from GRUB. It asks me to give the "root password for maintenance," but it won't accept my root password. Would the upgrade have wiped my partition??? Or am I just locked out somehow because it was in the process of changing config files?

I have a dead usb and I want to format it. It is not detected in ubuntu. But in disk utility as 0.0KB unrecognized. In gparted it is not shown.
ouput of fdisk -l

/dev/sdb is entire device, not just one partition!
Proceed anyway? (y,n) y
mkfs.ext3: Device size reported to be zero. Invalid partition specified, or partition table wasn't reread after running fdisk, due to a modified partition being busy and in use. You may need to reboot to re-read your partition table.
How can I format it?

I used my old RAM in my new PC. The RAM was rated for 533mhz but the motherboard could not run it below 667mhz. Today I was using tdfsb (3D file system browser) in my music folder (which has a lot of files/folders) the PC froze. After 20min I pulled the plug and it started back up properly. After some updates later that day, I tried to reboot. All it did was shut down and light up the fanlights instead of restarting. I tried resetting the battery. With the old motherboard, bad RAM would cause beeps and I hear no beeps. The board is a Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H. The CPU an Athlon II x2 255. RAM failure would cause beeps or not.

After upgrading to 11.04 I did not like Unity. I found procedures to switch to Gnome 3 and, without reading reports about problems with it, I followed one. When it called to reboot I get good purple then blink then purple with word ?? UBUNTU..? then black screen with some misaligned messages about batteries and last one about CUPS. And this screen is a dead end.
I found advices to remove ?gnome-accessibility-theme? and install standard theme. My problem is that my only system is plain Unix without network from ?recovery mode?. I tried to ifconfig but I don?t know how to get WiFi to start on this Dell laptop. I remember I spend a lot of time to get right drivers for my first Ubuntu. I have no way to remember what I did to have it working.
My question is: how to switch back to Unity (and wait for fixed Gnome 3) or how to fix Gnome 3 from ?recovery mode?? (I would like to avoid install from scratch because I don?t remember what I did to install all drivers to have functional Ubuntu).

Did an upgrade today from 9.04 to 9.10. As far as I can tell, everything is working, with the exception of Firefox 3.5.6 with new install. I've attempted an uninstall and install. Tried the following with 3.5.6:URL...I finally found that if I use sudo (or gksudo) I can run firefox at the command prompt. Any other time I run it, it just shows an icon on the lower bar and then it disappears, but within the system monitor it shows Firefox and will show as many as you run the icon with.
I've deleted the entire .mozilla directory, and manually removed all the firefox info fro /usr/bin also before a reinstall. I assume it is either a strange permission issue or some link related issue."which firefox" shows:/usr/bin/firefox and the 3.5.6 files are located /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.6 . Any help would be great, I'm at a loss at this point. I'm sure it's something simple, but it's a royal PITA.I have nxserver on the machine, if that means anything and there was a session locally as well as one remote during the upgrade (using the same account).

I've got a toshiba A135 series. I installed 9.10 from a live cd, and the installation process went fine.
When I rebooted the computer, it loaded up giving me the option to select one of the following:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory text (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
I chose the first one, hit enter and the computer went to a black screen with the cursor up in the top left corner blinking away. Then nothing. I've read that this distribution is giving folks a lot of trouble. Has anyone had this same thing happen to them after a clean install?

I recently had ubuntu as my main operating system on my computer, but that wasn't working out because iTunes just does not work on ubuntu. So I started to try to dual boot windows XP, but when I tried to create the partition, all of them crapped out on me, so now I'm left with a computer boot anything, it just goes straight to error loading operating system. Now I can't get the one folder that I need off of the ubuntu installation because I don't have permission too.

Perfectly working 9.10 just upgrade to 10.04, and now CUPS won't play ball. Any time I try to add a printer with the inbuilt Printer admin utility I get the message:
There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'server-error-internal-error'
If I try and add the printer using http://localhost:631 - any operation gives me:
631 - Request Entity Too Large
My previously installed printer has been removed automagically. Boo. So far I have:
aptitude purge cups
aptitude install cups
Which has made absolutely no difference.

I am in need of some help trying to get my wireless working. I have a compaq presario f557us and my wireless card just seems to be dead. I got this laptop a few years ago and I tried installing ubuntu 7.04. The wireless part did not work out of the box (it took a lot of tinkering but finally got it working by using ndiswrapper). Later I did an OS reinstall but tried ubuntu 8.10 this time and the card was recognized with no problems, I just needed to use the proprietary drivers that ubuntu recommended. Finally I decided to give 10.04 a try. I don't know if doing an "apt-get upgrade" would've been fine but it's too late for that now; I did a fresh install and the wireless part seems dead.
I already tried installing ndiswrapper as I did before:
$ ndiswrapper -l
bcmwl5 : driver installed
later I tried the fwcutter way:
$ bcm43xx-fwcutter -i bcmwl5.sys
Sorry, the input file is either wrong or not supported by fwcutter. I can't find the MD5sum b89bcf0a25aeb3b47030ac83287f894a

I've just set up Mint Linux 9 (Isadora) on my laptop (Compaq R4000), and I'm having an issue with 'dead space' when using a second monitor. Because the aspect ratios on the two monitors I'm using are different (the laptop is widescreen, the other isn't) I'm getting dead space above (or below, depending on its positioning in the virtual desktop) where the mouse will hide. It's not a huge problem, but it's bugging me like nothing else.
Is there a convenient work-around for this problem?

It looks like my laptop's wireless chipset (Broadcom) has/is dying. It won't work anymore on my Lucid install whereas it was working perfectly. The warrenty is long expired.
lspci brings up nothing about it anymore, it once did.
I booted my laptop into Win7 and it no longer finds it either. The manual slider switch on my HP Pavillion dv6000 is in the on position but the light is yellow.
It will very rarely work on Win7 now.
I can't afford a new laptop just now so it looks like I need an external wireless adaptor. I have (open busses) USB, cardbus/54, and a small firewire port. It does not pcmcia or other busses.
Any particular chipsets to look for or avoid?

when I log in, I can move the mouse, but nothing else. The whole user interface is unresponsive and absolutely no keystroke works. It is probably not because of my hardware (hp 2710p) because logging in as root (with only slightly different Gnome configuration) does work well. I assume it is because of some error inside the Gconf. There is always an error when starting Gnome that an entry could not be read, including some bunches of ~30 question marks. If it is useful, I can give you the whole message literally.
I haven't changed data inside Gconf, but I did have it open when I was installing a program, and then the console did show the message with the question marks for the first time (while processing some "trigger" post-install). I think the program I was installing was drapes (for changing desktop wallpapers in Gnome). Strangely Gnome did startup correctly afterwards for a couple of times (always showing the above-mentioned error). I have no idea what change made it suddenly stop working yesterday.
The differences in Gnome configuration between the working root and the unresponsive user account are, as far as I can tell from memory: changed theme (elegant-brit), wallpaper, fonts, globalmenu in the panel, installed - added to panel - uninstalled drapes. The rest is the same for the root account. I can still log in to the shell as the normal user, but "startx" leads to the disabled graphical interface. As I said, the graphical interface works well when I use the root shell. I can't access the internet from the user shell unfortunately (if I need to, I will figure out how to set up wlan in the shell).

I have a Macbook that I need to recover files off of. Problem is that the screen is bad, and I have no way of booting the thing up to access the filesystem. So now I have the hdd plugged into a PC and have booted the ubuntu live cd. I can access the drive, but my pictures, music, and library folders have a red x marked over them indicating I do not have permission to view their contents. I have been trying to change the permissions to no avail. For some reason I cannot navigate to the directory through the terminal to change the permission. Instead, when I go to cd /media/Macintosh HD is throws a No such file or directory error.
The Macs hdd is already mounted, because I can access its file structure. I need to know how to get into the Macintosh HD through the terminal so I can give read/write permissions to the music and pictures folders.

ubuntu 10.10 Firefox 3.6.18 I have been running ubuntu 10.10 since it came out and this problem just started for me in the last couple of weeks and seems to be growing worse.
Firefox was still stalled after 2 minutes of waiting to create this Post. The way I finally got here was to hit the manual refresh. Clicking on the URL Line and hitting Enter didn't help. I have noticed this happens on a few other sites, as well, but for the rest of them, Firefox seems fast. Chromium jumps onto the UbuntuForum bang fast.
I applied the fix I found at [URL]..It didn't appear to help. However just now, when I clicked the bookmark of that URL to get the URL to paste here, it loaded darn fast, whereas last time I waited 3 to 4 minutes for it. Does anyone know what is happening and how to fix this for all sites, especially UbuntuForum?

I have three computers in my network, but two will be mentioned. Computer A is a Linux Mint 9/Windows 7 dual-boot, and I have just installed Mandriva Free 2010.2, which I will call Computer B.
Now my main problem is that Computer B, while it can see and access Computer A's shares as well as the third computer, the aforementioned computers cannot access Computer B. The message was: "Unable to mount location/Failed to mount Windows share." Now, the SMB protocol was used because of the third computer and Computer A have Windows OSs installed in them.
What I originally wanted was that I can share Computer B's NTFS partition, namely Documents and Downloads, to the other computers. And I can't do that, because of the error message.
What I can do, however, is use Computer B to view shares from the other two computers (Computer A, as an example). By my experiences in Linux Mint, I understand that I'd have to mount my Windows partitions in order to share them. I don't even know if my NTFS drive in Computer B is mounted, though that is what was described.
