Ubuntu Servers :: Put A Few Login Restrictions In Place?

Jun 3, 2010

I've got Ubuntu server 10.04 set up and I wanted to make a few restrictions. It's pretty much just acting as a VMware server at the moment, and there are some users I've created who I only want to be able to be able to log into the VMware infrastructure web interface. I want to make sure these users can't log in via SSH, FTP, or the console itself. I understand how to block them from logging in via SSH by using DenyUsers, and I added these users to the /etc/ftpusers file to lock them out of FTP, but how can I block them from logging in at the console itself?

I tried locking the user out by editing the /etc/passwd file, but the problem is that by doing this, it also prevents the user from being able to log into the VMware web interface.

The user's entry in /etc/passwd looks like this: bsmith:*:1005:1005:Bob Smith,,,:/home/bsmith:/bin/bash

Security :: Shell Login Tripwire - Optimal Place?

Jul 11, 2010

I have disabled root login in my remote shell and I have a pretty strong password. I am not happy though. I want to increase security. I've been thinking about installing some basic tripwire rig, like say, send myself an email every time I (or anyone) log in. My questions:

- What kind of data would be useful to be sent in that email? Anything else besides "user so-and-so logged in at {date and time}"?

- How would I achieve that? Is it enough to include it in .tcshrc (because my shell is tcsh)? Should I add it to other shells as well (.bashrc, .csh etc.) even though nobody uses the other shells? Is it better placed in some other file, like .login? What is the optimal place?

- Would that be enough? Can I make that whole idea more secure in any way?

Jan 27, 2011

What is the best place to get an updated nVidia video driver for CentOS 5.5? Is there a CentOS package available that will update it? Or is it best to download it directly from nVidia?

Also, I do not have an internet connection on the machine, so it will have to be a manual download and installation.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Disks Switched Place In 2 Different RAID5 Arrays?

Feb 21, 2011

We have CentOS on an HP proliant g5 server and attached to it is an DAS with 3 branches of disks so 5 - 5 - 5 drives. Now what we had so far there is that every branch was on raid 5 and totaling 3 mounted drives each with 4TB (disks are 1Tb each). But a couple days ago something happened while i was replacing older drives with some bad sectors with new one. What I did is to remove old drive, put in new one, initialize and attach to array and rebuild starts. Now somehow 2 drievs ( as i was rebuilding 2 arrays at once) switched place.so disk on 1_1_5 and disk on 1_3_5 switched place. There coul dbe possibility that I made mistake and assigned them to different arrays when initializing but that is really hardly as i replaced one then later another so...

Anyway to the to the point. Is there painless option to remove 1 disk from array and then assign it to other array and then let raid rebuild everything normally?I;ve made backup of everything there so there is no fear of loosing anything...By the way at the same time when that switch happens a partition from 1 raid array completely dis speared and there is only unallocated space on that one right now.

CentOS 5 :: Can't Get Into Login Screen Now

Jan 17, 2011

I'm using CentOS 2.6.8. It was working fine until yesterday. I tried to install openvpn into the system. I heard I need to download [URl} first and run it. But I got failed on doing sudo yum install openvpn I'm not familiar with the system, so I just give up the installation.

However, today, when I boot up the system, I can't run into the login screen at all! It force me get into kernel and I got

[root]#/user/bin/rhgb-client: error while loading shared libraries: libglib-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

when I try to use "ls" command, I got ls: error while loading shared libraries: libpthread.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I think I ruined everything yesterday and totally panic now.

General :: Login Command In CentOS ?

Aug 13, 2010

For some reason every time I enter the 'login' command as root, my putty shell craps out. It's as if the kernel is not prepared or does not know how to handle the 'login' command. Where can I set it up? Maybe it's not configured to use PAM?

I want to use this command to switch users. Sure I can use 'su username' but I noticed there are some issues when using 'mail' command right after I change users. It gives me a permissions error as if the environment variable for mail is set for roots mailbox instead of the new users mailbox.

How can I configure 'login' to work properly in CentOS?

General :: Automatic Login On CentOS 5.5?

Sep 6, 2010

I have installed CentOS 5.5 successfully and I have VNC working. This server will be a headless box that will reside in a server rack. I intend to perform any necessary maintenance on the machine remotely though my desktop computer. My problem is that when CentOS is on the login screen, I cannot connect with VNC. Once I have logged into a user account, then I can connect.

I would like the server to automatically login to one of my users each time it boots so that the VNC connection will be opened. Currently I have two users, root and Zachary. I would like the server to automatically login to the user Zachary.

In the CentOS Gnome GUI, when I go into System > Administration > Login Screen, and then click on the Security tab there is an option to "Enable Automatic Login." If you check this box a select form field becomes active; however, there are no user accounts showing in that select field. I tried typing in the user name that I wanted to automatically login, but after closing the screen it clears that username. What am I missing?

CentOS 5 :: Can't Login In KDE 3.5.4 With LDAP / Enable This?

Jun 25, 2009

We use Centos 5.3 which we deploy to dozens of boxes in different buildings throughout our shop. I set up KDE to be the default windows manager for these boxes, although the individual users can choose for themselves. We use LDAP authentication, and typically logging in through the LDAP into KDE goes without a hitch. However, a couple users are having problems logging in to their accounts through KDE, my boss and my boss's boss to be specific. We have NFS shares which serve up each users home directory regardless of where they connect in our system. When my boss, or his boss, try to log in, they put in their credentials, and LDAP accepts them, but KDE never starts. The splash screen which displays that it's "initializing system services" or "loading desktop" doesn't even come up, it just has a picture of the desktop with a cursor, and hangs there. I've tried deleting the .kde directories in their home folders, but that doesn't work. Those two are the only accounts out of our entire system that have problems logging in to KDE, and I have no idea why!
I've looked in the .xsession-errors file, here's a copy code...

I know it isn't the xset or "no profile" errors because all the users I've checked get those too, but they can log in just fine. Both xsession files on both users are almost identical to this one, it just seems that KDE will never start.

CentOS 5 :: Lockup At Gnome Login

Dec 16, 2010

Running 5.5 64bit. Same machine has been running since release of 5.0. Normally the machine runs the nvidia driver from elrepo but I switched back to vesa (thinking the Nvidia driver was the problem, no go). Machine starts up normally and everything is fine until when the login screen should appear. Instead of the normal login screen I have a black screen with the mouse swirly going round and round(which normally occurs for a second or so). This all started when I went out for dinner. When I came back and wiggled the mouse all I got was the swirly. Rebooted, same thing. I can switch to a tty and log in normally. xorg log looks clean. Both drives are accessible via cli (/home is on a separate drive).

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Login / Enable This?

May 14, 2011

One of my colleagues was working on my system (Centos 5.6). He deleted some files from the /tmp directory (he thought he was cleaning up files). Right after that, he rebooted the system. I now can no longer login.

Prior to this, here's what I see following a reboot code...

no matter what I use, I cannot login -- it takes me back to the (none) login: prompt

Any ideas? I know that deleting from the /tmp directory could lead to catastrophic results, but he thinks he only deleted a specific set of files.

CentOS 5 Server :: Proftpd 530 Login Failed?

Jan 25, 2009

I'm having quite a hassle getting proftpd to work.

My setup:

- CentOS 5 (latest version)
- ProFTPD Version: 1.3.1 (stable)

Want do I want:

A simple FTP server which allows me to acces the /var/www/html directory to upload new files for my apache webserver.

What are my problems:

When trying to login it says the following:

***Begin***
[root@ICT2-Gateway ~]# ftp 127.0.0.1
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
220 FTP Server ready.
500 AUTH not understood

[Code]....

As you can see this has nothing to do with faulty firewall settings since i'm only trying this locally. Futhermore the password is 100% correct (and keyboard layout).

Since I've changed alot in my config file it thought it's not worth mentioning here, I'm reverting back to default.

CentOS 5 :: How To Enable A Screensaver At The Login Screen

May 22, 2009

Does anyone know a way to activate a screensaver at the login screen? I've got about 5 machines here, and I'd really like the ability to just have the screensaver come on after 5 minutes of sitting there with nobody logged in...

Even a way to blank the screen would be nice. However, if we were to blank the screen, I need to ensure that it doesn't do a DPMS blanking, since we use calibrated monitors here, and turning them off sucks.
