CentOS 5 Networking :: Internet Access Slow In CentOS 5.3?

Sep 9, 2009

I have an MSI K9A2 Platinum mobo, which has a 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet Realtek 8111B built-in, a D-Link DIR-655 Router and a DSL modem. Compared to Windows Visya and other Linux distros ( Fedora 11, Suse 11.1, Mandriva 2009.1 ) access to the internet is much slower. It seems there is a noticeable delay when running CentOS 5.3. before internet access kicks in each time I am surfing the web or updating my system.

Is there any way I can speed things up, or determine why CentOS 5.3 seems much slower ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Slow Login With 11.3?

Oct 8, 2010

With the upgrade to 11.3 x86_64 I was very disappointed to find that the time it took to log in to KDE once I entered my password skyrocketed. On 11.2, what used to be a speedy two seconds before I would see the desktop has now turned into 30 seconds, or more sometimes: today it was closer to 45.

disable powerdevil or to disable the KDED modules, both located in the service manager.

Disabling powerdevil does bring my login time back down to where it was in 11.2. I have several questions now: Powerdevil is described as a "laptop power management daemon" in the service manager. Is it truly only for laptops? What features does powerdevil provide? If I disable it will my CPU frequency scaling and other power management features still work?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Slow Boot After Login?

May 3, 2010

After keying in my passwort at the login, it takes exactly 26sec until the Desktop is ready. I have checked bootchart and it seems that the udisk-daemon is blocking the boot process for some reason. I have tried different disks, different memory, without dvd...always the same problem.

Last thing I did, was to put in the disk into another pc, different mainboard different proc and voila, it boots very quickly.

I suspect this to be due to my mainboard or proc.

Mainboard ASUS M4A78-E
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core Processor
2x2GB DDR
Radeon HD 3300 Graphics
WDC WD5001AALS-0 500GB (System)

OpenSUSE Install :: Slow Startup After Login / Speed It Up?

Nov 1, 2010

What can I do to speed up the start-up after login?

I am running OpenSuse 11.3 with Gnome on my laptop (Acer Travelmate 2490) and I need about two and a half minutes from login until the hard disk lamp 'settles down'. This is much longer than I have been used to expect from earlier OpenSus versions. Are there some default applications/processes I could ditch?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded From 8.04 - Lucid: Login Slow?

Sep 28, 2010

Upgraded from Hardy where all worked fast and the only annoying bug was a total freeze every so often. So I thought it would be good to go to the next LTS version and see if it works better. However it is very slow starting up. bootchart reports 2:44 min compared to 40 sec for Hardy and that is only the start-up. Then the real drag begins after you enter your password. It's been up to 30 min!!! before the system became responsive and did not have a solid HDD light.

So my question is where do I start troubleshooting. I'll include the bootchart and dmesg log. What else is needed to tackle this issue? I'm really in a tizzy here, since it's my wives laptop and she is not as patient as I am, to put it mildly. Do I need to downgrade back to Hardy

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow Login After Activating Wlan0 ?

Apr 1, 2011

I have a strange issue that I cannot put my finger on. Recently,I installed a new Ubuntu 10.04 server. No extra software yet, apart from openssh-server. The wired connection (eth1) works fine. I then added a wireless card with chipset p54pci, which appears to work with the wext driver. Configured /etc/wpa_supplicant, and /etc/network/interfaces as well:

This is wpa_supplicant:

Code:

This is interfaces:

Code:

After a reboot the machine comes up with both NICs active.

If I do a ssh from another Ubuntu machine to this machine (to 192.168.2.100, so the wired address) it takes about 30 seconds before I get the login as: prompt.

If I change the interfaces file so that wlan0 is not started (I comment out the line auto wlan0, and reboot), connecting from another machine with ssh alsmost instantly gives me te login prompt.

I tried switching the order of both NICs in the interfaces file. Also tried changing the sshd config file so that it only listens on the wired ip address. Both did not help.

Does anyone have a clue why logging in with ssh from another machine is very much slower in response with wlan0 activated than without ?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Lucid Slow Boot Before Login Screen?

May 5, 2011

I just did a fresh install of Lucid on my desktop. The boot background splash screen comes up very fast, but then it is about a 1 minute wait until the login prompt appears. Then once I enter my login credentials, GNOME loads up ASAP. It wasn't this slow before I reinstalled. Anyone know why this could be? Everything works.

CentOS 5 :: Server Is Very Slow From Ssh In LAN

Feb 11, 2010

in my office I've setup a centos server which uses no GUI only the console with apache & mysql for testing purpose, notice that I haven't setup any vhost or any mysql db yet, so the load is 0.00 The strange thing that suddenly one day I tried to login to this "server" from my windows pc (in the next room) via putty , and since that day the "server" is very very slow. What do i mean? when I try to login with SSH it makes 15 seconds or more to ask me about login, and then about password (like it happens in a server with massive load). then when I type the command in the konsole it always delays between letters.

I run top -c and everything is dead (0.00) so there is no load. even If I ping -t localip the machine , after 3-4 pings I get "Request timed out". so I think something is wrong with the local network. If I get connected physicaly in the "server" and start pinging my windows pc it works great, everything is going fast, the konsole is fast (as it should be) and if I ping any other servers it also goes withoute a problem. The I think its not a problem with the "servers" network connection.

SSH access works fine from a LAN computer, but anything over the internet is extremely slow or times out. We're talking a good 1-2 minutes just to get the login prompt! This is a new installation, I switched from Fedora to CentOS. Previously, SSH from off-network worked perfectly fine with Fedora. What could it be? All other network services on this machine are working properly and at normal speeds, it's just SSH that is not willing to cooperate.

CentOS 5 Server :: Slow File Transactions On 5.5 Nas-box?

Jan 17, 2011

we got a dell nf600 network storage server which functions as headnode for our little computing-grid and network storage system
i did a normal install of centos 5.4, upgraded to 5.5 and so far there haven't been any problems with one exception:there are 2 harddisk configurations present on the box:

- a raid system where i store all the data with 4TB, mirrored
- a harddrive where the system files are stored

the network access happens via samba and nfs and is fast enough, but when i want to copy something from the raid to the single harddrive or vice-versa, or make some bigger file operations on the raid, the system slows down VERY much and is not responsive at all that there should be some extra-configuration for the filesystem/raid controller/... but i don't know where to start looking i would appreciate it very much if someone could help me further - and i will ofc provide all the configuration files you need for that (i just don't know which ones to post here in the first place)i'm not too lazy to read through some manuals, if you know a good one for setting up a fileserver in centos (with info how to tweak performance)
