CentOS 5 :: Can Change Passwd But Still Not Able To Login
Oct 2, 2009
I have a web server running Centos5 on a Xeon processor with 2GB of RAM. Whenever I try to login as a user the system hangs. If I login as root I can login without any problems. I tried changing the passwd. I can change the passwd but still not able to login as that user. I tried creating a new user. When I run the command adduser or useradd the system hangs.

I am using Red Hat and was wondering how to disable username and password only login and require that a PPK secure key file be used for authentication ? I can log in using the secure private key and the public key that is in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys but i can still log in using the plain username and password login.

we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -

FC9 - Sulphur, x86, nothing fancy
Did an update (damn the unofficial repos!)
Found a problem with pam_passwdqc module.
Like the title says, I'm unable to change root's password.
I boot into singleuser mode, run passwd, get the
Code:
Boot into multiuser mode and I'm still unable to login.
Two questions:
1) Anyone have a 'default' /etc/pam.d/system-auth that I can replace with the system-auth that was obliterated by the pam_passwdqc update?
2) Any other ideas?

I just installed Centos 5.2 with a netinstall usb key. I had no Belgium keyboard mapping available during installation, so I chose a fr-latin1 layout. Now this is the default keyboard mapping for the gnome login screen, and for every new user on the system. How can I change this to a Belgium keyboard layout? I can change it for myself within my gnome session in Preferences>Keyboard, but I haven't found how to change the "global" or default setting.

1. I tried to change my password by typing "passwd" in the terminal. It then asked me to input the Unix password. After I typed in the Unix password, it read "Authentication token manipulation error". Why did that happen? I know what the Unix password is.2. . What is the difference between Unix password and Root password?

I want to change the login screen in Fedora 10. I know in previous versions gdm manager or something like that was used to change this. I have a theme file that I downloaded from Gnome-look, but I can't use it in Fedora 10 because gdm wasn't included in 10 or something? How can I sort this, and does anyone know if gdm is making a return in Fedora 11?

i'm running F15 with the Gnome 3 shell and also changed the shell's style to a theme called 'Zukitwo', it can be found here..
[code]....
follow the instructions in the 'Install' document closely, i found after installing a different package manager called 'Yum Extender' which made things simpler for me, i installed the 'Gnome tweak tool', 'gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme'' and 'gnome-shell-extension-common'', but i also had to install the latest 'Murrine GTK2 engine' for the 'Zukitwo' theme to be recognised in the 'Gnome tweak tool', the location i chose to copy the Zukitwo folders to was.. /home/your username/.theme I'd like to now change just the style of the Fedora 15 login window(as in username/password popup box), but without changing my background wallpaper that being used, i have found a 'login' box style from a website below which i'd like to use.
[URL]
is changing just this part of the 'login' box style possible without altering the exsisting background, and how might this be done?

I've tried to change the log-in screen on Fedora 15 (gnome3) to have a custom background, however none of the guides I've found have worked - I'm now left with a blue background with no image. They all follow the same instructions as this guide. (I did change the address and PID to my own ones, although the PID was always increasing everytime I typed it) If I type this into the terminal logged in as my user I just get my desktop background changing, although I'm assuming this is correct.
