Ubuntu Installation :: Firefox Does Not Open After 3.6.6 Update

Jun 30, 2010

This morning my Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy box was all Hardy. The Update Manager told me to install some updates, which included a Firefox 3.6.6 update. That update failed to install, and now I everytime I click on the panel launcher or go to "Applications," then "Internet" and then "Firefox" I get the following error: Could not launch menu item Failed to execute child process "firefox" (No such file or directory)

Note: When running Firefox from Terminal:

Code:
jonathan@ubuntu-desktop:~$ firefox
The program 'firefox' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install firefox-3.0
bash: firefox: command not found

Applications :: Update From Firefox 3.0 To Firefox 3.5 Through Yum / Remove Previous Installation And Use Solely One Package?

Nov 16, 2009

Recently I have installed Fedora 10. It comes with firefox 3.xx by default. Now I was wondering if there is any way through which i can update it to 3.5 version though yum. I have tried yum update firefox but it did not work and returns following messages Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit Setting up Update Process No Packages marked for Update I know that one way to update is download the latest Tar package and use it, but I want to totally remove my previous installation and use solely one package i.e. firefox 3.5.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Update Firefox

May 4, 2010

I've been having problems with the Update Manager ever since it tried to install an update for firefox a few days ago. I'm on Hardy, and I tried to completely remove the firefox package using Synaptic, and re-installing it, and I always get the same error. Maybe it might have something to do with ubuntuzilla? I know I used that a while back to install Firefox 3.5/3.6, since the only one I was getting from the package manager was 3.0. Anyway, here is the error:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_3.6.3+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~mfs~hardy2_i386.deb: trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/firefox', which is also in package firefox-mozilla-build

I can't make heads or tails of this

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Won's Shutdown After Firefox Update?

Sep 1, 2011

I've had this happen three times and only since a firefox update yesterday. When I try to shutdown using the shutdown icon on my desktop, it goes to the splash screen and there it sits.

When I shutdown via terminal, it closes down just fine.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any other suggestions? I will undo that update tomorrow being that i need a break from the computer screen.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update To Open Office Not In The Channel?

Mar 12, 2010

I just checked [Mar. 12, 2010 16h:00 EDT], there is no update in the (Canonical) channel for Open Office. I regularly download updates both automatically as well as manually, Yet my current version is:

OpenOffice 3.1.1
OOO310m19 (Build:9240).
On my mac OSX 10.6.2, I already have 000320m12 (Build:9483).

Why is Canonical taking so long to place the newer version in the channel? My reason for seeking the update is to try and resolve a problem that I have just noticed today. I have not needed to print envelopes since January, and now I find that printing envelopes on my HP C4345 multifunction no longer works as before.

Instead of putting the output on the RIGHT side (where the envelope is fed), OO is consistently sending the output to the LEFT side (easily confirmed by placing a standard letter size sheet in place of the #9 envelope, which (the latter) invariably comes out as "blank" (no print on it).

I am hoping that an update will resolve this issue before I resort to submitting a bug report.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Update Open Office Is Gone And Cannot Reintsall?

May 5, 2010

I am using Ubuntu Hardy via the Dell Mini. Quite awhile ago I upgraded my OO to the newest lpia version I could find...I cannot recall, but I did it "manually" by adding the launchpad repository etc.

Yesterday I noticed that my update manager was flashing at me and telling me I had updates and so I let it update. Afterwards I noticed that my Open Office would not work...in fact it was almost as if it was uninstalled. It was nowhere to be found. So, I thought maybe my update got messed up and I ran it again with update manager - no changes. reinstall OO. I first tired "Add/Remove" and I got an error as soon as I clicked on the box next to the suite: "This application conflicts with other installed software. conflicting software must be removed...switch to Synaptic" When I mark OpenOffice.org for intsallation I get the pop up for "Mark additional required changes" which I say yes too and then another error:

"Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade. The following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences"

It then lists about 10 packages such as "openoffice.org-base....-calc....-filter-binfilter etc etc

I know I have the repositories chosenand I believe they are enabled:

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Downgraded From Firefox To Namoroka

Jul 31, 2010

I ran the update manager a few weeks ago and for whatever reason, it downgraded me from Firefox 3.6 to Namoroka (Firefox 3.6 beta release from what I understand). Having had Namoroka before, and knowing how unstable it was, I immediately removed it and reinstalled Firefox 3.5 from Linuxappfinder.com. Upon this last update, Ubuntu again downgraded me from Firefox 3.5 to Namoroka. I am worried about updating my other computer because of this problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Recent Update Broke Firefox / Reinstall It?

Apr 8, 2011

RE: Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64bit Updates from 2-3 days ago.

Since then, Firefox starts and runs fine the first time. Close it down and later try to restart, error says that Firefox is already using that profile and will need to quit it before proceeding.

System Monitor then shows that firefox and firefox-bin are still loaded (although nothing in the gnome app tray at bottom of screen). Jill those 2 processes and Firefox loads normally.

Should I wait this out and see if later updates cure this? Reinstall Firefox? Submit a report to launchpad?

Ubuntu Networking :: Nfs Locking Files - Cannot Open For Editing, Or Open Firefox / Thunderbird?

Dec 12, 2010

Server - Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts
Client - Kubuntu 10.10

When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:

"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:

Unknown User

Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem. Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...

relevant entry in /etc/fstab:
server:/nfs/dan/Documents /home/dan/Documents nfs defaults 0 0
relevant entry in server's /etc/exports:

I updated from karmic to lucid server edition and now firefox wants to download some php files. index.php which is in the same directory is apparently correctly parsed.

Google chrome tells me that the site may be temporarily down and Opera informs me that the connection has been closed by the remote server.

Under karmic I had a standard lamp server installed and everything worked fine.

This is the first time I post in a forum and I hope this is fine here.

I just moved the scripts from the server to a local machine which I updated a couple of weeks ago to lucid.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading To FC12 - Access Port 631 Through Firefox Wouldn't Open

Feb 8, 2010

I only began using Linux with the release of FC8. I've upgraded into every new version (upgrade, no clean installs), after the new versions had been out a while. I struggle with command lines, updates, cups and other very cool tools that are only difficult because they have so many options. I'm Windows guy at work, a system admin and db administrator, plus the company expert on Excel. But, all in all, I hate Windows, and I'm loving Fedora, even if I struggle.

This last upgrade really kicked me in the pants. The first thing I noticed was all of my software sources were gone. I did some research around the forum and tried a few things, but it's still not working. Unfortunately, I may have uninstalled Yum in the process, but not rpm. I've tried to re-install the yum packages, but still no luck.

This morning before leaving for work I noticed that a boot log indicated that cups had failed. I went in to restart the service (through gui) and it said it was running. So I stopped the service and re-started. I tried to access port 631 through Firefox and it wouldn't open. I need to check the firewall to see if it's an open port, but beyond that I don't know.

Now I'm wondering if I should just do a clean install. I haven't done this, mainly because I didn't want to hassle with setting up my printer again (although, it's a Brother and they have the drivers and good instructions), and I didn't want to lose any emails that I've received via Thunderbird. The printer is really a non-issue now, as I'll have to set it up anyway. I have a backup of the /usr folder and all the documents. Question is, if I restore the Thunderbird folder after a clean install, would it bring back my email?

General :: Use Firefox To Connect To Smb Shares Error "Firefox Doesn't Know How To Open This Address, Because The Protocol (smb) Isn't Associated With Any Program"

Jan 10, 2010

i am wanting to use Firefox to connect to my smb shares. However, i keep getting this error message: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (smb) isn't associated with any program. My client configuration is as follows: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.8pre) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Shiretoko/3.5.8preI tried the instructions below to try and fix the problem with no success: Quote: From [URL]

Linux with Firefox In order to connect to a network share directly from you browser under Linux, you must configure Firefox to handle URL's starting with "smb://". This is done by typing "about:config" in the address line and hitting return. After that you must right-click the list of settings and choose "New -> Boolean" as shown below.

As name you must type: "network.protocol-handler.external.smb" with a value of "true". After that you must do the same thing over again, but this time choose "New -> String", type the name: "network.protocol-handler.app.smb" with a value of the path to the application you wish to use for browsing network shares. If you use KDE, this will typically be "/usr/bin/konqueror".
