Applications :: Replacement For Hotmail For A User?
Jan 16, 2010
i'm currently using gmail as my general and main mail service provider and hotmail for my daily mailing!I hate yahoo, it's really unsecure!!I want a email service provide as secure as possible that shows i'm using linux!hotmail and microsoft and windows are chained together!
I'm wondering if it's possible to control what applications are available to certain users on a per user basis.
My motivation:
I have separate logins for audio production and general admin. Under Applications > Sound & Video I have tonnes of audio apps, but as I never use these under my general admin account, there's little reason to list all of them.
how is the applications menu configured? I'm wondering because I'd like to create some custom sections.
I have installed a lot of CLI applications and it would be usefull if I had another one of these that lists and organizes ;in different ways ,what has been installed without a GUI. I tried this (rpm -qa | less) and it was lack luster and enormous. Is there a GUI or a CLI application that will list User installed CLI application and allows ways to list them , alphabetically or otherwise etc?
I have /home on its own partition.I reinstalled ubuntu Intrepid with a different user name. Now when I use F-Spot for instance i get a error "Could not open /home/olduser/.file".But how can i remove all references to /home/oldusername in all applications and point them to my current /home/username?
I can't get a program (wbar) to run directly from my user account, it fails saying "Image not found -> maybe using a relative path?". But if I run su -c "wbar", it shows up and manages to load the image. I think it has something to do with ImLib2 or whatever loads the image. I checked permissions on libImlib2.so.1 and it's world-readable and executable. Can libImlib2.a be causing this problem, set to 644? What else should I be checking?
I wanna trace user's command input history. but I dont plan to use "history", "lastcomm" becauze there is not detail of the user command history. if there is some software use to log user command to one file or database, it's suit for me.
I have a user Application for transferring the data from one PC to the other PC using Ethernet Port, can we create a device driver for that ?? that means it should act like a virtual device, if we write data into /dev/some file, it should go the other PC
With OpenSuSE 11.2, I would have a guest account running skype, and a media account running mythtv (both users logged in at the same time using switch user). I had skype on auto answer incoming calls, and I remember watching a movie when I suddenly heard my Dad's voice appear calling my name. That was cool!
Now that I'm using OpenSuSE 11.3 (both were using KDE), skype only plays audio when that user's session is active. Switching to the media account will prevent skype from starting to play any sound. Switch back, sound is normal. If I remember correctly, now the skype audio cuts out as soon as I switch user.
I also have a tv capture card which only STARTS to captures analog audio when the media session is active, mythtv being run by the user media. Once the show is started to record with sound, we can switch users and the show continue to record with sound.
The only thing that should be configured differently from the default install is that I compiled mythtv (it wasn't available as an rpm when I upgraded to 11.3, and haven't bothered to check since).
I have searched and searched for answers to this question, but I can't find what I'm searching for anywhere. At least with the search terms I'm using. So, my question is, is there a backup software for Linux that backs up not only a user's home folder, etc, but also the user's applications, and its associated data.
I am about to upgrade my mother's computer to Lucid, but I don't want to do that until I can find a backup solution that will ensure she doesn't lose any of her application data. She has a lot of apps on her netbook, so just finding out where each individual app stores its data and backing it up is kind of out of the question. Unless every app that the end-user uses (that isn't run as root, obviously) stores its data in the home folder, then it would be easier.Honestly, I use a Mac and I guess I'm just used to the simplicity of Time Machine, which certainly backs up applications, application data, user data, and even extra executables in all the /bin folders (which Macs don't typically use to store most applications). I've heard TimeVault is like Time Machine, but when I tried to use it on her computer, it wouldn't work because it wasn't compatible with the version of Ubuntu that was (and still is) on her computer.
Would it be safe to say that if I build a restricted user: "Desktop" or "unprivileged" user I will be ok? From what I understand - most scripts or applications cannot install without the 'sudo' prompt and user input.
I want to access my hotmail account through evolution. i've set the pop info and all that, but whenever i try to send/receive, it says error fetching mail.
how to retrieve hotmail using Alpine? I can get gmail using the IMAP feature and having the Gmail certificates but I'l like to be able to get my hotmail without opening a web browser. I have one friend with whom I communicate via Pidgin/MSN messenger, that's why I opened the hotmail account - and sometimes she sends me an email to hotmail because that's her primary email service.
so its not that difficult after all - just use PRISM!log into hotmail on your browser - copy the http: line and add it to PRISM then add your login detail and Voila! all ready to add to the task bar!ok so not the most in depth how-to but if youve been messing about with all the different email apps using Prism will be childs play! if not just message me and ill add more detail.
I just upgraded to the newest ubuntu. Everything worked great before but since I upgraded, it asks me to relogin over and over again when I go into hotmail. I had to use a different computer just to get into my hotmail to verify my new account here so I could ask about this. It will repeat over and over making me log in but i won't even spend anytime in my email.
I am using 10.10 and Namoroka I cant access hotmail. I also have minefield which is installed from the ubuntuzilla ppa it can access hotmail if I about:config what settings do I change to grant access .I want to remove minefield which I installed before I upgraded, as I don't want two versions of firefox.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 - the Maverick Meerkat -. I am not able to open hotmail. Just a blank screen. I can open yahoo and gmail though.I tried to open with Google Chrome and FireFoxEven following sites are not opening.[URL]I have opened all the above sites when I just booted from XP.
I 've got an hotmail (live-mail) account, that I'm using on my iPod with Microsoft Exchange. This is really working fine, so I was very happy when I read, that you can use this feature with Evolution Mail.
Now my Problem is, that the Settings I use on my iPod won't work with Evolution.
I think the Problem is the OWA URL cause whatever I do it can't connect to this Server.
I'll give you the Settings, that work on my iPod:
E-Mail: xxx@hotmail.de Server: m.hotmail.com User-Name: xxx@hotmail.de Password: xxx SSL: ON
Does anybody know the OWA URL of the Hotmail-Server or does every Account have one of it's own?
I have my hotmail account set up in evolution and it receives just fine but it gets stuck trying to send. Its set to smtp.live.com for the sending server. any suggestions as to why it wont send? i have a gmail account set up with thunderbird and it sends just fine so i know i can send.
I have no idea and no understanding of the configuration of Evolution I mean you need to specify something called a "server" for sending and another separate one for receiving. What does this mean? I mean there are plenty of guides that tell you how to but majority of guides of no insight to help you understand what is going on. Also I don't know about you but I find it an incredibly shallow and not to mention fraught experience following guides that contain customized elements because I never know the specifications applicable to me. You can't always just copy and paste commands as sometimes variables are tailored to the instructor's situation.
What is a "server"? What are the servers involved in having an email client?"pop3.live.com" is specified by default. What is pop3?What should I specify as my server type? How do I find out?"SMTP" is specified by default as server type. What is SMTP?What is "inet daemon"? It is mentioned in some guides. What is "hotway"?"This will set the inet daemon to listen to incoming calls on port 2500, and forward the connection to the hotsmtp daemon. Now, save your file, exit gedit, and restart your inetd server using the following command" - what is "port 2500"? This is why Linux will never be able to compete with Windows. Think how easy it is to set up Outlook. It doesn't assume obscure knowledge of technical aspects.
I have a lot of emails on hotmail and gmail that I want to store in text or html files on my local Fedora computer for future reference. Is there a way I can download them to my hard drive without doing it one email at a time with the browser's Save Page As feature or some such thing? There has to (?) be a better way.
Every mail program should have an easy-to-use 'mass' export-to-text-file feature so that people are not held hostage to a particular email service or program. The lack of such a feature in email programs I've used is one of my pet peeves. It seems rather tyrannical and abusive. (Now before someone tells me it's a free service, please remember all the advertisements I have to go through to use the service). I do not have an email account through an ISP. I live with my landlord who deals with the ISP. I only use hotmail and gmail (and, rarely, yahoo).
Yesterday I tried to use KMail with my hotmail account. First mistake I made was not to check "Leave fetched messages on the server". The obvious result of that was that I had empty hotmail (web) account. I've found this but its for Thunderbird to upload your messages back on to the server. If I can put all my messages back into hotmail server that would be great. Since I do use web account as well. KMail is only on my home PC.
I am using hotmail as my main email and want to setup the evolution as my default email client.but for some reason it couldnt download my folders which are on the server.it only downloads the mail from the inbox.is there any workaround for this.also if i switch to thunderbird would it be able to download the folder from hotmail??
I just synchronized my hotmail account with evolution and it works flawlessly, however every time I click send-receive it stars to download mail by mail (more than 10,000, so it takes a while) and it won't check if I got new messages until it is done. The first time it happened I thought it was a normal thing, and that evo won't scan ever again from my hotmail account. Does anyone know how to stop doing that?
I have another brief question, I would like to know if there's a way that when I read a message on evolution it will also mark as read the same message on my hotmail account.
im really impressed with the OS so far, exactly what i've been looking for. the install was a little rough, it hung up on "getting the time from the server" for almost 15 minutes even though i was connected to the internet. then for the first few bootups, the ubuntu boot screen was a box that only took up 1/4 of the screen. but that went away. anyway - im in now and its all looking good, but theres a few things i would like to be able to know how to do.
#1 - how do i set up evolution to access my hotmail account?
#2 - just noticed this while uploading an avatar to this site, the box that pops up that lets you browse your files - theres no view change? i have to click each individual picture to see what it is; can this be changed?
#3 - what is currently the best way to get an expose-like feature going in ubuntu?
