I'm interested in altering the activity-monitor/pointer on my distro or at least finding out more about it. Is it part of Gnome or KDE or is it else where?
View 5 RepliesFedora 13 is currently my Linux Distro of choice but I find the Pointer/Activity-monitor is annoying. Usually it has two states ,the solitary round thing or the pointer. Every now and again they are combined into the Ubuntu combination symbol of the two joined into one image. Is there a way to change this image/moving-icon? I like Mandriva's the best and would prefer it worked on all Browser windows so that New Firefox versions did not disable it.Thanks in advance!
The term I needed to find additional info was (Mouse Themes). The (Wait Cursor) is usually included with this.Download the theme you want and go to System> Preferences> Appearance> Customize> Pointers to change to one that is alreadly installed.To install themes, System> Preferences> Appearances> Install. Apparently more than one them can be used on a distro so the Browsers will use its own while Nautilus will use another. Fedora's default one does not funtion properly. It will not change to the pointer if a web page is still loading if you need to sellect something. I learned that Mandriva uses the (Bluecurve) variation for default which is like Ubuntus where it does not have to change between two different images and hense does not lose functionallity.
Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.
Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.
Is there a way to do this in C/C++.
I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.
I need a software that monitors the total internet data-transfer since I use a limited data-transfer scheme. The USB modem that I have has a software but that works only with Windows. In spite of installing Wine, it doesn't monitor the data-transfer.

I'm having some spikes in the morning and just realized it's not always at the same time so it's hard to get up and watch the processes with top. I need something that records CPU usage and load average of the processes from 4AM to 9AM (for instance) so I can debug the process that it's consuming my CPU and spitting +80 e-mails with monit each day.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted to know is there any way to monitor (I mean log)all of the activity of the users that logging in a server (as root) for example:
1.when do they logging in
2.what commands do they use at what time ( I know that history command do somehow the same but it does not save all of the activity of users exactly with the time of that activity)
3.which one of them installed which package on the server
4.what did they copy or move at what time and summery all the activity that each of them do on the server individually.
I've noticed that the majority of the time I will double click an icon to launch and application the cursor activity (mouse loading/busy icon) will not show. The application will launch but there is no indication whatsoever that it's starting up. I haven't had this problem with other Linux distro's and I'm wondering if it's a setting or some sort.
I did notice that on a few applications it works just fine and it will do the loading animation. However, a lot of them will not show it at all. This is very frustrating especially if the application takes a bit to load and you don't know if you even launched it to begin with. Is this a bug or something that can be turned on?
I do hope I explained which animation I'm referring to. It's the circular loading animation that occupies the mouse when you are waiting for an application to finish launching. I'm not entirely sure if this is a gnome thing. Seem to work just fine on my old KDE desktop.

The data is basically a few English sentences. I'm trying to scan buf1 for newlines and then stop at the 1st newline and copy the rest of the data from that 1st newline into buf2.So I run a for loop to look for that new line.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to do a scheduled software update several times today (8/20/11) and nothing seems to download, though I do get the "Downloading" PackageKit dialog message (the System Monitor shows practically no network activity). In between tries I downloaded some 600 MB .iso files (about 10 minutes each) so I know my internet is working properly. That leaves either PackageKit got hosed in my last update, or servers are down.
View 2 Replies View Relatedafter upgrading to Natty (and playing around some with Unity) I noticed that the top part of the application windows are often hidden/covered by the gnome panel (see attachments).
This is particularly annoying for the rdesktop session (second jpg) which I had set up so that it gave maximum desktop size to the rdp session while leaving the panel of top. If you look carefully you see that the "panel gap" is not at the bottom of the screen, while the panel itself covers the top of the rdp window.
It seems like, that the 'anchor point' for application windows used to be '+0+24' (so just below the panel) while now it's '+0+0' in the top left corner of the desktop. I suspect that while playing with unity I reset one of the compiz options which takes care of this. But I can't find it.
Right now, I need to use a dual-monitor setup. Be it for my casual desktop usage, or to my projects and programs presentations with a slideshow. The latter is critical and that's why I'm here.So, after some Intel Drivers update, some programs started to work nicely, faster and beautifully. But it corrupted my Dual-Monitor Setup. I don't know what to say, I'm totally desperate. I had to show one of my programs to my teacher using a projector, but with the dual monitor corruption, I called in sick today. I need to use the netbook screen to make changes on the program and the second monitor/projector to show the program working.

I am trying to torrent using transmission. The problem is, when I click a link to download something, I just get
"/tmp/mn3BZo4y.torrent.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator."
This is happening on all torrent sites.It never comes up with an "open with" option or anything.
I need to run application, wich originally wrote for linux, under windows. SMPCallBuilder - application name. There is actually windows version for this program, but unfortunatelly without abillity to run it from console, AND I DO need to run this program from console, because I white program wich should work automatically.

I have read about creating a .desktop file but tried that and it still does not appear under the menu I like. It does appear on the desktop but not because of the .desktop file.

For this, I have to make an application which communicates with the device drivers provided by the ARM linux(which comes with the OMAP L-138 *) so that we can transfer the data stored in the device to a computer.
My question: Suppose I make such an application which makes the host Linux computer detect my device connected at its USB port and then transfer the stored data to the computer. Will windows computers be able to detect my device? What should I do so that my device can transfer data to both Linux and Windows pc?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI seem to be seeing some weird behavior in kubuntu with KDE 4.3.2 and KDE 4.3.5 for Kubuntu 9.10 32-bit.I have a few programs in my home folder. For instance Eclipse and Mendeley. it seems that when i create a Link to Application does not launch them. Here is how I create the links.
-> I right click and create a new "Link to Application"
-> I click on the Application tab and browse to where the shell script, or executable is.
and when I try to launch them it does not work. The link is using the absolute path. I tried setting the working directory and using a relative path but nothing. If I run the link in a terminal it says "Warning: Could not find" and the application I set. Now this seems to not be a problem for system applications like Kate. If i change the link to launch Kate it works perfectly.
Is it possible to suggest an application to appear in the "Featured Applications" list in the Ubuntu Software Center?I would like to suggest that "OpenShot Video Editor" is included.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes when starting applications, especially with Wine, the screen resizes to a much lower resolution. Sometimes when I close the application & usually when it crashes/I have to kill it, the screen stays at that much lower resolution. To get my normal 1900*1200 resolution back I have to delete all the applets I've put in the top menu bar to for there to be enough space for the menu to appear for me to select System>Prefs>Monitors.How can I prevent an application from altering my resolution & just force it to run windowed, or at a higher resolution?
