Software :: Get Installed Applications List And Applications Activity

May 25, 2009

Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.

Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.

Is there a way to do this in C/C++.

I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

Fedora :: Repository List And List Of Installed Applications?

Feb 17, 2010

I understand there is a file that stores the repositories' information, but I can't find it!Is there a way I can create a list of what applications have been installed? The idea is that if I am running a backup, finding a way to save the repository list and applications installed so if I am upgrading, or fixing a borked system by re-installing Fedora, I could copy the repo list back, and run the applications list like ode:yum install <cat apps.txt?> and get all of the applications I've installed via Yum without having to remember them all?Is there anything else, outside of /home, I should look at backing up? SELinux settings?

Ubuntu :: Installing Applications From Software Center?

Feb 6, 2010

I'm having problems with the ubuntu software center. When I try to install any software it does nothing when I click the install button. I can click on the visit website page and download the source and compile it manually but I was under the assumption that you could use the install button and it would do it automatically for you. Am I wrong? I am running UNR 9.10 on an Acer Aspire One 110-1588.

Ubuntu :: Use The Playonlinux Application In The Software Center?

Jul 25, 2011

I currently run a dual boot system Windows Vista & Ubuntu, I am trying to use the Playonlinux application in the software center, for those who may not know what this is, it allows you to install windows application (ie games) on your linux system.. but im getting an error when installing software, it keeps saying that there is not enough space on my HD to install then shows me the current amount of HD space that is availible, its only saying i have about 7gigs free, but i have well over 200gigs free on my HD, Im guessing that Ubuntu made a partition to install on, and it didnt make it big enough. (Just my best guess) Is there a way i can increase this partition size? without having to reinstall? or am i just totally off track and should be trying something else!

Ubuntu :: Dead After Install The CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) Application From The Software Center

Jun 10, 2011

Just got my 11.04 and tried to use some settings in Compiz. I`ve made these steps: Install the CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) application from the Software Center. If you need assistance with installing the application, consult the software installation help, or review the Ubuntu Software Center Manual.

After you have installed the program, click the power icon at the very right of the panel and select System Settings. In the Personal section, click CompizConfig Settings Manager. In the Desktop section of the CompizConfig Settings Manager, click Ubuntu Unity Plugin, and select the Experimental tab.

I`ve clicked on the left side there was something like "enable plugin" or sort of. And my launcher, and the pane on the top dissapeared! I got nothing. Just the screen. Nothing is workin. What the f>..?

Ubuntu :: Add Wine Back To Applications List?

My list of programs under Application > Wine had become messed up, with some entries for programs that had been uninstalled in Wine. I was unable to remove these from the menu for some reason, so I removed the entire Wine category. It was not re-added upon reinstalling Wine... do I have to add it all back manually, or is there some way to have it appear as it did when originally installed?

Ubuntu :: Startup Applications List Locked?

Feb 24, 2010

About a month ago, I had something go very wrong in my Karmic and my account (with an encrypted home dir) was essentially inaccessible. But I was eventually able to create a new account, and retrieve all my data, but now, for some reason, I cannot edit the 'Startup Applications'.

I open its window and make any changes (which the window seems to accept), but then when I hit close, and restart it, it has been reset to everything I had set from my other account. Which makes little sense.

After that problem, I did have some trouble with permissions of certain files, and am afraid that I inadvertently gave up permissions on my startup applications, but can't imagine what I'd have to do to fix it.some guidance?

Ubuntu :: Apps Disappear From 'startup Applications' List

Nov 8, 2010

I've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.

Ubuntu Installation :: Copy Application List From Pc To Pc?

Dec 2, 2010

I recently got a new desktop, and did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. The reason I installed 9.04 is because the laptop I have been on for the last 7 years or so suddenly stopped operating with grub updates. I would t urn the computer on and it would never get past the 'grub loading' screen. but thats a whole different story. So I did a fresh install of 9.04 off of a startup disc I made a while back. Then I copied my /home file from my laptop (the old one) and inserted it into the new desktop's /home directory. Worked like a charm (more or less), and all my settings were transferred to my new computer. Desktop, Preferences, Admin stuff, I can't find a problem with it. Now for the applications.

I've tried multiple how-to's but none of them have worked. I found one that told me to do the following in terminal. Keep in mind, although I've been running Ubuntu for about three or four years now, I would still consider myself a noob. Anyway:

sudo dpkg --get-packages <filename><destination>

this left me with a text only file called 'package.selections' I was then to copy this file into the home folder on the new computer and run the following:

sudo dpkg --set-selections <directory>

Up until that last command, everything worked just fine. The list had tons of package titles (none with a .deb or anything though) and their state, got it on to the new computer and ran the code only to get the following error:

dpkg --set-selections does not take any argument

So i ran it without the directory, and it gave me a new line. So I typed in the directory and it gave me the following:

dpkg: unexpected end in package name at line 1

I've tried numerous other commands changing up the syntax as I go, but haven't gotten any farther. My goal is to have all the same applications installed on my new rig without having to go and install all the packages one by one.

Just in case something breaks so badly that I have to reinstall I want to be sure I can put everything back, even if it takes me several days work.I know I have read about utilities that will generate a list of installed apps, but I can't find any.
