Jan 3, 2011I have installed Fedora 14 and have problems with the sound i have an Realtek ALC662 6-Channel HD Audio chip and ALSA should be loading by Fedora but no sound not over the speakers and also the headphone doesn't produce sound, while playing video or dvd no sound.

Feb 3, 2010This is true for .flv, .avi, .mov, and .mp4, at least. This is true in both vlc and movie player. Thumbnails generated from frames in the videos appear correctly in nautilus. Videos play fine in firefox, on ....., but I downloaded one as an .flv and then it had the same problem. I have restricted extras freshly installed. My "Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala" system is fully updated. I've found several other forum posts about the same kind of problem, but I couldn't find anything helpful in them (like that the contrast setting might be WAY out of whack, which it wasn't, or that nvidia drivers needed to be updated or reinstalled, which I don't have anyway, etc).

Jun 15, 2010I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Dec 14, 2010Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

Jan 30, 2011The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.

Feb 21, 2010This problem presented itself upon upgrading to ubuntu 9.10. Any time something affects the sound system the buzz goes away. If a song plays, no buzz. If I simply adjust or mute the volume, no buzz. But after 10 seconds of no sound related activity, the buzz returns. This is a very loud and aggravating buzz, most likely made worse by the fact that I run my sound through an amplifier.

May 6, 2010Using Debian Lenny I recorded a wav file with Audacity to burn to a cd with K3b.The problem is when I played the cd with KsCD; it wouldn't stop when it got to the end; it just kept studdering. I didn't have problems using KsCD to play CDs I had ripped and then burned with K3b.Is this a problem with KsCD, or do I need to do something when I finish the file with Audacity?

Apr 3, 2010I'm trying to get Totem to play VCD's. There are many complaints about this not working, but since they're all really old and dealing with different problems, it's hard to tell if this is an issue with me, or with the totem package. When I put a VCD in the computer, I expect it to pop up, (as it does) and prompt me to open the CD with Totem (which it does). When Totem tries to play it, though, it throws this error:
Code: An error occurred. Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.
Interestingly this is the same error I get when I try to play DVDs on a separate computer with the same ubuntu software. The CD plays, however. If I click ok, and go to:
Movie > Play Disk '<disk name>'
The problem is:
1) I want it to be automatic, without errors,
2) These VCD's have several tracks and after the first 30 second track, it stops. It won't play any other tracks.
I tried a few other pieces of software just to see if other things worked (as I'm looking for user friendly-ness, I doubt the others will be a final option):
VLC: (No apparent activity. Disk spins)
gxine: Autoplay input plugin 'VCD' failed: Check engine output for further details.
Mplayer: Error!: Failed to open vcd://2.
K3b seems to have no problem, but it's not really a media player...

Mar 10, 2010I've worked out how to get ALSA libasound code working for an application. However I can't workout how to get multiple sounds working at once. I can't seem to find any google examples of mutiple sounds. EG tune plays while pressing buttons makes clicks. I'm using an embedded board so need to use ALSA not an addon e.g. sdlmixer, jack, etc.

He very kindly installed my Edirol UA25 soundcard, and when i click 'test' on System-preferences-sound, it indeed plays a sound. The problem is that when I try to play anything from the internet on firefox, or any sounds in VLC, or any other application, it doesn't work. I believe I'm running Ubuntu Studio, version 8.04, but I am not sure. I have an Athlon 64 bit processor if that's relevant.

Aug 20, 2010I'm on Fedora 13 GNOME. I haven't installed proprietary Nvidia drivers for my GTS 250 graphic card. The problem is now whenever I play any video file in any video player the PC freezes locking up virtual terminals. However the sound of the video continues to play on until the video ends. I have to then cold reset from the switch on chassis. What can be the probable reason behind this?

Mar 7, 2010When i try to play HD (even with 720p) video the CPU load is almost 100%. I'm using vlc player and the movie is barely watchable. If i switch to Movie Player, the CPU load is slightly decreased, but after 2-3 minutes the audio goes out of sync, so no solution there. I have an nvidia 8600gt graphics card and the proper driver installed, every compiz effect works flawlessly without the slightest increase in CPU load and a dual core 2,1 GHz AMD processor. It shouldn't be a hardware issue.

Sep 12, 2010I've been using Ubuntu 10.04 for about a month and generally the graphics work fine (I have a Radeon 2600 XT graphics card and have installed Catalyst Control Centre 10.7).3D games such as Nexuiz work fine and I can generally play different types of video but when I try to play HD video it gets pretty jerky. The same files play fine in windows so I'm guessing it's a software/driver issue. I've read various related posts to this and after typing 'top' into the terminal, I can see that playing the video takes most of the CPU processing resource up, which I as I understand, suggests that most of the work is not being offloaded to the GPU.

Oct 2, 2010I am trying to burn a video DVD created from "Devede" with K3B. The video DVD successfully burns, and plays in my computer, but does not play in any of the DVD players in the house. I used to user "ConvertXToDVD" when I was on Windows, but am trying to find a free/open source alternative on ubuntu. I am using all default options. I have looked in the settings for both programs, and I fail to see the problem here. Even the ISO created from devede seems to match up to the Video DVD (that works in the players) I had burned with ConvertXToDVD.
In Devede I have it so that the menu is disabled and it automatically plays the first title. Apparently this is not good enough.. I thought this program was supposed to be easy to use? What am I doing wrong here? I am using the same DVD-R I have used before on my Windows machine to great success. I am getting frustrated as I have went through 2 DVDs,
